Luxury Midsize SUV Crossover

Which 2022 Acura MDX is Right for Me?

2022 Acura MDX

Consistently one of Acura’s best sellers, the luxurious MDX is all-new for 2022, marking its fourth generation. (There was no 2021 model offering.) Acura’s new flagship SUV is based on Honda’s brand-new light-duty truck chassis underpinning the Ridgeline. Compared to the previous MDX, this all-new model is longer, lower, and wider, and is complete with a new, more sophisticated suspension.

Think of it as an SUV that has taken a step in the wagon direction. And lest you think the Acura MDX exists in a vacuum, it should be noted the MDX faces a rather stout set of luxury 3-row SUV rivals. They include such stars as the BMW X5, Genesis GV80, Audi Q7, Volvo XC90, Lincoln Aviator, and Cadillac XT6.

Power for the standard Acura MDX comes from a 3.5-liter V6 producing 290 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque linked to a 10-speed automatic transmission. The MDX offers a choice of front-wheel drive (FWD) or Super Handling All-Wheel-Drive (SH-AWD). Equipped with FWD, the MDX can tow up to 3,500 pounds. Opt for SH-AWD and that ability climbs to 5,000 pounds.

Still to come is the high-performance Acura MDX Type S, which will boast a turbocharged V6 making an estimated 355 horsepower.

Five Acura MDX Trim Levels

The Acura MDX is available in five trims: base, Technology, A-Spec, Advance, and Type S.

With its new upscale focus, even Acura’s base model is generously equipped. The base model, simply named MDX, includes seating for up to seven passengers, power front seats, tri-zone automatic climate control, a power liftgate, panoramic sunroof, and loads of high-tech features. All models include AcuraWatch, Acura’s standard safety suite. It bundles active safety and driver-assist systems such as forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, road-departure mitigation, lane-keep assist, and blind-spot monitoring.

Standard features include Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, Qi wireless charging, and 9-speaker audio system. And from the Honda Odyssey: CabinTalk technology, which uses the audio system to amplify front-seat passenger’s voices so they can be heard in the rear of the bus. Stepping up through the trim levels only increases the features and quality.

Pricing starts at $46,900 for the MDX and tops out at $60,650 for the MDX Advance. All-wheel-drive is available for an additional $2,000 but is included on A-Spec, Advance, and the Type S. Destination Charges are $1,025.

The 2022 Acura MDX Technology is our choice for those in search of the best combination of features and price. By ordering this trim level with SH-AWD ($53,600), buyers get a good feature set that includes amenities like a power liftgate, ELS Studio 12-speaker premium audio system, premium leather seats, GPS-linked climate control, navigation, and more.
