Subcompact SUV Crossover

Which 2021 Honda HR-V is Right for Me?

2021 Honda HR-V

The Honda HR-V is the smallest crossover in the Honda portfolio of SUVs, slotting in just below the CR-V. It’s a great choice for those in search of a small SUV that has a roomy interior, good driving manners, and offers reliability, efficiency, and Honda’s historically high resale value.

The Honda HR-V is the vehicle to which competitors such as the Toyota C-HR, Mazda CX-30, Nissan Kicks, and Hyundai Kona will be compared. The HR-V offers technology like Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and the Honda Sensing suite of active safety features. As our review of the HR-V states, though, some of these features are not standard until buyers venture into the higher trim levels.

One of our favorite features of the HR-V is the Magic Seat in the second row. With the seat cushion flipped up, it can accommodate taller, upright items. Fold the seatbacks forward and the cargo area expands to 58.8 cubic feet of space.

While a couple of its rivals are equipped with turbocharged engines, power for the Honda HR-V comes from one engine: a 1.8-liter inline-4 cylinder that produces 141 horsepower and 127 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Sport trim and above models include paddle-shift levers that help mimic traditional gear changes. While perfectly suitable for around-town jaunts, you may feel engine strain when the HR-V is loaded with passengers and their gear.

Four Honda HR-V Trim Levels

The Honda HR-V is available in four trim levels: LX, Sport, EX, and EX-L.

Pricing for the HR-V starts at $21,220 for the HR-V LX and tops out at $26,020 for the HR-V EX-L. All-wheel-drive is available on all trims for an additional $1,500. Destination Charges are $1,175.

The 2021 Honda HR-V EX ($24,420) is our choice as a value leader for those in search of features and price. This particular trim level includes standard Honda Sensing safety features, heated front seat, moonroof, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Honda LaneWatch, Satellite radio, and 17-inch alloy wheels.
