The flagship of the Korean automaker’s line, the 2021 Genesis G90 is a full-size luxury sedan that competes with the BMW 7 Series, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, and Audi A8. It offers a load of standard features, a comfortable interior, and a class-leading 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty at a starting price considerably lower than its competitors.
The base engine is a 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 making 365 horsepower, or there’s a 5.0-liter V8 as well. Both use an 8-speed automatic that sends power to either the rear or all four wheels. Power is certainly ample with both engines, but the G90 is more focused on providing a comfortable, compliant ride rather than the sportiness of its G70 or G80 little brothers.
The build quality is impressive, and the interior is full of Nappa leather and wood trim. Standard features include power-adjustable front seats (22-way for the driver and 16-way for the passenger) that are also heated and ventilated. Also standard are heated rear seats, tri-zone climate control, wireless phone charging, and a 12.3-inch infotainment screen with satellite radio, smartphone integration, and an impressive Lexicon surround-sound system. There is a complete suite of standard safety systems as well.
Two Trim Levels
Genesis keeps it simple with the 2021 G90, offering two trim levels corresponding to the two available engine choices. The base 3.3T Premium gets the 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 and rear-wheel drive for $73,975, which includes the $1,025 destination charge. All-wheel drive adds $2,500. This is about $4,000 lower than a comparable Lexus LS and about $14,000 lower than a base BMW 7 Series.
Standard equipment includes an impressive roster of safety features, including forward-collision mitigation with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, driver-fatigue monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and 360-degree camera system.
Also included are a 17-speaker/900-watt Lexicon surround-sound audio system, heated and ventilated front seats and heated rear seats, smartphone integration, 360-degree camera system, and free service valet. Other standard features include a 12.3-inch infotainment display, satellite radio, and wireless phone charging.
Aside from the 5.0-liter V8, the focal point of the top Ultimate trim is its rear seats, which are fully adjustable independent of one another. The right-hand seat also can power the front right seat forward for more legroom. Also in the Ultimate is a rear-seat entertainment system that includes a pair of 10.3-inch high-resolution screens.
Unless you require the adjustable rear seats and the higher level of equipment on the top Ultimate trim ($77,725), we think the Premium is a great choice. Its 365 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque are certainly ample to keep the big sedan moving.
