Midsize SUV Crossover

2025 Toyota Crown Signia vs. 2025 Mazda CX-70 Comparison

As 3-row SUVs continue to get more mainstream, midsize 2-row SUVs still have their place in the world. They have a smaller footprint and more agile driving dynamics than a bigger 3-row model, yet retain a lot versatility. A couple of examples of competitive midsize SUVs that forego a third row are the Toyota Crown Signia and Mazda CX-70. Both are new models for this year, and they both have nice interiors and standard all-wheel drive (AWD), but there are a few differences you should know about.

Let’s take a closer look at the Toyota Crown Signia and Mazda CX-70 and find the right SUV for you.

2025 Toyota Crown Signia

The Toyota Crown Signia is an all-new model, effectively replacing the discontinued Toyota Venza as the brand’s midsize 2-row SUV offering. The Crown Signia comes exclusively as a hybrid, and all-wheel drive comes standard. Similar to the Crown sedan, the Crown Signia has a lovely interior, many standard features, and, of course, hybrid efficiency.

Toyota Crown Signia Highlights

Standard hybrid powertrain: The Crown Signia is one of several Toyota models that comes exclusively with a hybrid gas-electric powertrain. It generates 240 horsepower and returns 38 combined mpg running on regular gas, yielding lower fuel costs than even the plug-in hybrid version of the CX-70.

Tons of standard features: The Crown Signia has a higher starting price than the CX-70 partially because it’s so well-equipped with standard features. A few that come on the base XLE trim include heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, 19-inch wheels, a 12.3-inch screen, and Toyota Safety Sense 3.0.

Toyota reliability: Toyota has a well-earned reputation for reliability, including for its hybrids. Case in point: The Prius has been around for over 20 years now, and lots of early examples are still on the road today with tons of miles on them. Toyota is a name you can trust.

2025 Mazda CX-70

The 2025 Mazda CX-70 seen in profile

The Mazda CX-70 is essentially the 2-row version of the CX-90, which is not a bad thing. Like the CX-90, the CX-70 boasts upscale interior quality, some nice variety under the hood, and the driving athleticism we love about Mazda. Like the Crown Signia, the CX-70 has standard all-wheel drive.

Mazda CX-70

Available PHEV: The Crown Signia is a conventional hybrid and the CX-70 is available as a plug-in hybrid capable of running on electricity alone. It has a 26-mile all-electric range and returns 25 combined mpg with a depleted battery.

Bigger interior: The Mazda CX-70 has more second-row legroom and more cargo space than the wagon-like Toyota Crown Signia. If you have tall passengers and bulky cargo regularly, you’ll like the extra space in the Mazda.

Sporty Turbo S models: Mazda CX-70 trims with “Turbo S” in the name come with a high-output version of its turbo 6-cylinder engine rated at a healthy 340 horsepower. This mill makes the Mazda much more exciting to drive than the more sedate Toyota.

Conclusion

These SUVs are different enough that it’s hard to declare a clear winner over the other. The Mazda CX-70 benefits from a lower starting price, a bigger interior, and more powertrain options. However, one could argue that the Toyota Crown Signia is a better value because of its generous list of standard features and lower fuel costs. Run these pros and cons through your filter of wants and needs, and the right SUV for you will reveal itself.
