2026 Nissan Sentra vs. 2026 Toyota Corolla Comparison

While the compact sedan segment isn’t as flush with options as its SUV counterpart, the small sedans buyers have to choose from keep getting better. Case in point, the redesigned 2026 Nissan Sentra and 2026 Toyota Corolla. Both offer some compelling reasons to purchase with their affordability, diverse trim options, and efficiency. Let’s compare the two and see which one might be right for you.

Nissan has outdone itself with this redesign, which includes a reappearance of the high-end SL trim level. Nissan loads the interior with an impressive array of tech features, complemented by high-end materials. It feels spacious and comfortable, and handles well on road. While the 2026 EPA numbers have not yet been published at the time of this writing, the Sentra uses the same 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) that afforded this 4-door solid gas mileage in its previous generation.

While that same powertrain might offer up nice gas mileage numbers, it doesn’t put up any more significant power at 149 horsepower. The Sentra does not currently offer buyers a higher-powered option or a hybrid.

Nissan Sentra Highlights

First-time Interior Tech: Nissan continues to level up the Sentra’s interior. Buyers now get a 12.3-inch touchscreen standard. All but the base model get a second 12.3-inch screen for driver information. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard. It’s wireless on all but the base model. Wireless charging also comes as an option on the Sentra for the first time.

ProPILOT Assist: Nissan’s complete suite of safety features now comes on the Sentra. You’ll get the smooth-operating Intelligent Cruise Control and Blind-Spot intervention. Other features such as Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Intelligent Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Prevention, and Traffic Sign Recognition are usually reserved for cars at higher price points and for extra money.

Delightful Design: If you never thought a Sentra would turn your head, then you might be surprised. Nissan has upped the ante with both exterior and interior upgrades. The exterior feels more like an evolution than revolution, staying true to its previous stying, only plussed. The interior fit and finishes get elevated, with quilted synthetic leather upholstery and contrast stitching on Nissan’s mega-comfortable Zero Gravity-inspired seats. Other extras such as ambient lighting, a power lift/tilt sunroof, and upgradable audio make for a more-pleasing-than-expected cabin experience.

The Toyota Corolla requires no introduction, as it is the best-selling production car of all time. We all know it as that stalwart friend who might not be the flashiest person in the room, but they’re the one you turn to in times of consequence. It’s safe, reliable, and fuel-efficient, as well as being affordable to own. The Corolla receives some solid upgrades for the 2026 model year, making it an even more attractive proposition.

Toyota Corolla Highlights

Interior Technology: The Corolla comes standard with an 8-inch touchscreen and offers a larger 10.5-inch screen as an option on the SE or as standard on the top XSE trim. All trims come with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The optional Intelligent Assistant works from voice commands. Say, “Hey, Toyota,” and your car responds with directions, controls the audio, or adjusts the interior temperature, among other tasks.

Fuel Economy: The 2026 Toyota Corolla impresses us and the EPA with its 32 mpg city/41 highway/35 combined ratings. It takes the checkered flag over all other gas-only-powered sedans in the compact category. Select the hybrid option, and you’re looking at 47 mpg combined.

Safety First: Toyota’s Safety Sense 3.0 comes standard across all trim levels. It includes many desirable functions to help keep drivers and passengers safe. It has automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, lane-tracing assist, road sign assist, and automatic high beams. It also features adaptive cruise control, which maintains a safe following distance from the car in front of you, slowing down and speeding up as necessary.

Conclusion

Both vehicles are well-regarded in this segment and might be so close that a winner could come down to reputation and customer loyalty. The Corolla has that hybrid option, but it’s more expensive. The Sentra tops the Corolla in terms of passenger and cargo space. They’ve got some of the most comfortable seats in the industry. When it comes to styling, the Sentra outshines the Corolla with this recent redesign. However, the Corolla boasts more horsepower, and benefits from Toyota’s renowned reliability ratings and excellent resale values.

Ultimately, this comparison comes down to which one is right for you. Head to a local dealer to test drive both and see for yourself. For us, it’s too close to pick a winner.
