Hybrid compact SUVs are like two solutions in one: You get a vehicle that has all the virtues of a 5-passenger hauler, including ample cargo space, a higher seating position, and all-wheel drive (AWD), plus the cost-saving benefits of a fuel-efficient gasoline-electric powertrain. Win-win! Two of the most alluring hybrid compact SUVs are the 2026 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid and the all-new 2026 Toyota RAV4, which is a hybrid by default.
These two models are from different brands and have their own personalities, yet you might not know that under the hood. They (mostly) share a powertrain. Yes, the CX-50 Hybrid is actually powered by the previous-generation version of Toyota’s tried-and-true RAV4 Hybrid powertrain; the all-new RAV4 uses an upgraded version. Here’s how they compare.
2026 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid
The Mazda CX-50 Hybrid was all-new for 2025, and those updates continue into the new model year, with the addition of a panoramic moonroof and parking sensors as standard equipment on the base model, and the higher trims add ventilated seats, a heated steering wheel, and heated rear seats. The CX-50 line is positioned as the rugged and outdoorsy sibling to the CX-5. The CX-50 Hybrid only improves upon its gas-only twin with more power, 219 horsepower compared to 187 hp, and better fuel economy — up to 38 mpg combined compared to 26 mpg combined in the CX-5.
Mazda CX-50 Hybrid Highlights
Standard all-wheel drive (AWD): All Mazda SUVs have AWD standard, an asset when roads become slick or when venturing off pavement. This matches the RAV4’s similar system, although it’s not standard on the RAV4.
Athletic manners: Here’s another thing inherent to Mazdas: They are fun to drive. Mazda vehicles — even Mazda SUVs — have an athletic feel, and that extends to this hybrid version of the CX-50. We find it very engaging in the twisties.
Head-up display: This helpful feature displays information directly onto the windshield, so you don’t have to take your eyes off the road. It’s in the Premium Plus trim of the CX-50 Hybrid.

2026 Toyota RAV4
While the CX-50 and its hybrid variant were new last year, the 2026 Toyota RAV4 is all-new this year. You may notice there’s no mention of a hybrid RAV4 variant, as even the base RAV4 is now a hybrid, with an available plug-in hybrid that we review separately. It’s not like Toyota is new to the hybrid game, however; Toyota has been making a RAV4 Hybrid for many years now. After all, this is the brand that helped create the modern compact SUV segment with the original RAV4 in the 1990s, followed soon after by the Prius hybrid.
The all-new 2026 RAV4’s standard hybrid system makes significant upgrades over the previous model, now making 226 hp in front-wheel-drive (FWD) guise or 236 hp in AWD form. Despite the boost in power, the new RAV4 is also more efficient than the previous RAV4 Hybrid.
Toyota RAV4 Highlights
Fuel economy: The RAV4 achieves up to 43 mpg combined, a considerable improvement over the already excellent 38 mpg of the Mazda CX-50 Hybrid.
Full-color head-up display (HUD): Available only on the Limited trim of the standard RAV4, this HUD is large and easy to read, helping you keep your eyes on the road while staying informed about speed, navigation, and more.
Cargo room: The RAV4 has ample space for your stuff, and more than the CX-50 Hybrid. The RAV4 Hybrid boasts 37.8 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 70.4 cubic feet with them folded, which are modest improvements over the previous RAV4’s figures. That easily outshines the CX-50 Hybrid’s 29.2/56.3 numbers.

Conclusion
With standard AWD, the Mazda CX-50 Hybrid has a bit more of a rugged-meets-sporty nature, yet it still retains the brand’s fun-to-drive character — while achieving great fuel economy. The RAV4, though, outclasses the Mazda in cargo space, beats it in fuel economy and power, and has a slightly lower starting price. With two rivals of similar size and using a similar powertrain, it’s expected that this would be a close match. Consider your budget and needs, take both for a test drive, and see which one seals the deal for you.
