The 2024 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport is the smaller, more stylish, 2-row version of the standard 3-row Atlas. Its coupe-like sloped roof leaves room for five passengers and a roomy cargo hold. With similar performance to its bigger sibling, the Atlas Cross Sport has average fuel economy, power, and towing capacity in its class. It competes with SUVs like the Chevrolet Blazer, Honda Passport, and Jeep Grand Cherokee.
The Atlas Cross Sport received a full refresh for 2024, with new front- and rear-end designs further enhancing its sporty looks.
A new 269-horsepower turbo 4-cylinder engine powers the SUV through an 8-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard on the two entry-level SE trims, with all-wheel drive available at extra cost. SEL trims come with AWD standard. The interior was also significantly updated with new infotainment, nicer materials, and more standard amenities.
Let’s take a look inside the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport.
Passenger Room and Comfort
With a good amount of room for tall heads and long legs, the Atlas Cross Sport defies expectations of reduced comfort in a sporty SUV. Headroom is 39.4 inches up front and 37.8 inches in the back on the SE trims and 38.6/37.3 inches with the panoramic sunroof on the SEL trims. Legroom in the back seat is a very generous 40.4 inches.
The driver’s seat has 10-way power adjustments, including lumbar, letting the driver find the optimal position for reaching the standard tilting/telescoping heated steering wheel with paddle shifters. Step up to the SEL for driver’s seat memory, an 8-way power passenger seat, and heated outboard rear seats. Both front seats are heated and cooled on the entire lineup. The rear bench seat offers a 14-degree reclining backrest, and rear window sunshades come standard on all but the base SE model.
Features and Technology
All Atlas Cross Sport models come with a 12-inch infotainment display and touchscreen controls. Wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and smartphone charging are all standard, as well as four USB-C fast-charging ports.
Volkswagen includes its Digital Cockpit Pro on every trim level. It features a 10.25-inch configurable instrument cluster with separate profiles for different drivers and a full map display on models equipped with onboard navigation. The SEL models add a head-up display that projects information on the windshield in the driver’s line of sight.
Standard dual-zone climate control keeps things temperate. It’s worth noting that both the climate control system and the heated and cooled seat functions are operated through the infotainment touchscreen. You can also operate the 3-zone climate control by voice.
A 6-speaker audio system comes on all Atlas Cross Sport SUVs except the top-grade SEL Premium R-Line, which gets a Harman Kardon premium stereo.
Materials and Design
The cabin features a modern aesthetic with soft-touch surfaces on the dash and center console. Leatherette upholstery is used in both SE trims. The SEL and above sport genuine leather, with the SEL Premium R-Line getting diamond-quilted stitching. All SEL trims also have ambient lighting in 30 shades to set any interior mood.
Cargo Room and Flexibility
One look at the Atlas Cross Sport’s sloped roof and most people would think “limited cargo space.” Those people might be surprised to learn there are 77.6 cubic feet of room back there with the 60/40-split rear seats folded down. That’s almost identical to the Honda Passport and more than many of its other 2-row competitors, like the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Chevrolet Blazer. There’s still a roomy 40.3 cubic feet in back with the rear seats up.
