The 2024 Subaru Impreza is completely redesigned this model year and is now available only as a hatchback with all-wheel drive standard. This extra all-season grip makes the compact Impreza unique among front-wheel-drive (FWD) competitors that include the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, and Nissan Sentra.
Engine choices consist of a 152-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine coupled to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). A more potent 182-horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder, also paired with the CVT, is fitted to the range-topping RS trim.
In addition to its updated styling inside and out, Subaru upgraded the safety and driver-assist technologies and made available an 11.6-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Let’s take a look at what the 2024 Subaru Impreza has to offer.
Passenger Room and Comfort
In stiffening the chassis of the 2024 Impreza, it turns out Subaru was free to tune the suspension more finely. The result is a notably smoother and quieter ride, which is much appreciated in city and highway driving. There is nothing particularly fancy about the Impreza’s cabin, and that’s OK. It’s a functional, user-friendly environment with adult-sized accommodations in the first and second rows. Rear legroom measures 36.5 inches, which is much more than the Toyota Corolla hatchback’s paltry 29.9 inches and a little less than what you get in a Honda Civic hatchback at 37.4 inches.
Cloth seating with manually adjustable front seats are standard in the base Impreza. It also features dual-zone climate control, one USB port, keyless entry, and 4-speaker stereo. Options include heated front seats, heated side mirrors, and heated windshield wipers. These are available starting on the Sport trim as part of the All-Weather Package, which accompanies blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, a power moonroof, and more.
With the Impreza RS, you get more heavily bolstered front sport seats, trim-specific cloth seating upholstery with red accents, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift handle.
Features and Tech
The standard Impreza is equipped with dual 7-inch touchscreens. Wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard with this unit. It’s easy to use and has clear menus, though we think many car shoppers should consider upgrading to the Sport trim that comes with a large, portrait-oriented 11.6-inch touchscreen in the center of the dashboard.
This has wireless smartphone connectivity and even sharper graphics with large touchpoints for quick and simple command inputs. A 4- or 6-speaker audio system is found in the Base and Sport trims, though audiophiles might consider the Impreza RS, which comes with a punchier 10-speaker Harman Kardon stereo. The RS also has wireless device charging, LED fog lights, and additional driver aids such as blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
While on the subject of safety, know that every Impreza comes with what Subaru calls its EyeSight bundle of driver aids. These consist of forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and adaptive cruise control.
Materials and Design
Now that it’s only offered as a 4-door hatchback, the Impreza rides a fine line between an economical compact car and a budget-friendly wagon/crossover. The rear liftgate opens wide and provides handy access to the trunk.
The standard cloth seats accommodate all different sizes and provide plenty of support, though we’re fans of the grippier fabric and sportier front seats found in the RS. They look good and feel even better. In strengthening the chassis and tuning the suspension, the Impreza has more polished driving manners, and one happy result is a quieter cabin.
Wheel sizes range from 16-inch steel wheels on the base Impreza to 18-inch alloys fitted to the Sport and 18-inch dark gray alloys found on the RS.
Cargo Room and Flexibility
Like SUVs and crossovers, hatchbacks have a great reputation for providing lots of cargo flexibility. This holds true with the all-new 2024 Impreza.
Behind the split-folding second row is approximately 20.4 cubic feet of volume. Fold the rear seat down, and the volume swells to about 56 cubic feet. That’s a lot of space for a small vehicle that’s good on gas, agile, and easy to park.
