Value continues to be the watchword for the midsize 2024 Genesis GV80. All discussions of this slayer of BMW X5, Acura MDX, and other highly placed rivals must begin with the value story. You see, the GV80 is the reigning champ of our Best Buy Award for a midsize luxury SUV. However, it’s not just about saving a few bucks. The GV80 stands out for its duo of turbocharged engines, high-end furnishings, and cutting-edge technology. And we haven’t even gotten to its class-leading 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
A lively 300-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder engine provides thrust for the entry-level GV80 2.5T AWD. An 8-speed automatic transmission spreads torque across all four wheels. The other two GV80 grades (3.5T AWD and 3.5T AWD Prestige Signature) source their go from a 375-hp twin-turbo V6 engine mated to the same 8-speed.
In short, a stately, elegant wrapper encloses a cabin, delivering an opulent, quiet, pleasing passenger experience. It’s nothing less than what you want from a midsize luxury SUV.
What’s New for 2024
With a redesigned Genesis GV80 SUV (and coupe edition) headed our way for 2025, Genesis tweaked around the edges of the 2024 GV80; however, there are still enhancements worth noting. For example, Genesis made Wi-Fi capable of connecting up to five devices standard for all trims. It also revived the 3.5T AWD Prestige Signature label as the most luxurious of the GV80’s grades, emphasized by the second-row captain’s chairs with their wing-like headrests. Down the trim-level pecking order, the Advanced Package for the 3.5T AWD includes a power-folding third-row seat.
Passenger Room and Comfort
With a second row boasting slightly better-than-average legroom for this SUV class, the Genesis GV80 delivers average passenger/cargo space overall. When included, the aforementioned power-folding third-row seat offers little in the way of serious passenger space. With only 30.3 inches of leg-stretching room, it best serves as a perch for youngsters.
Quality materials and meticulous workmanship highlight the GV80 interior. We argue that the 3.5T AWD Prestige Signature’s cabin, with its rich Nappa leather upholstery and suede headliner, equals or surpasses the interiors of many rivals, costing tens of thousands more. Standard on every GV80, the adaptive suspension smooths out pavement imperfections yet stiffens enough to promote letting the ponies loose when attacking curvy mountain roads. The former delights passengers, while the latter induces some driver grins.
Features and Technology
Headlining the GV80’s technology is its Highway Driving Assist 2 system, which is standard on every trim. It’s what Genesis calls its semi-autonomous driver-assist system that can accelerate, steer, and brake the GV80 under certain conditions. Also included with every grade are heated power-adjustable front seats, a heated power-adjustable steering wheel, proximity keyless entry, wireless device charging, and navigation supported by a 14.5-inch infotainment touchscreen.
A full range of safety-and-driver-assist technologies is also included. Among them are lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, high-beam assist, and many more.
Materials and Design
Whether strolling around a parked GV80 or settling back in one of its sumptuous front seats, you cannot help but gaze in wide-eyed wonder at the sheer beauty and simplicity of the design. In the GV80, Genesis takes the less-is-more approach to styling. And it pays big dividends. We wouldn’t fault you for believing a Bentley had just driven by in the wake of the GV80’s passing. Inside, you can’t rest your eyes or hands on any surface that doesn’t look upmarket or feel expensive to the touch.
The best part is that you can get it for under 60 grand.
Cargo Room and Flexibility
Reinforcing our argument that overall interior space is on par with most midsize-luxury segment rivals, the GV80 delivers about 35 cubic feet of stowage behind the second-row seat, which transforms into roughly 84 cubic feet with that seat folded. This capacity meets the segment average: check and check. However, with the third-row seat upright, the behind-the-seat cargo space shrinks to less than 12 cubic feet. Regardless of the available cargo space, the standard hands-free power rear liftgate makes accessing it easy and convenient.
