The 2024 Ford Mustang is completely new and roars into its latest model year with updated exterior and interior design, added technology, and the 500-horsepower Dark Horse trim.
About the only thing missing from the seventh generation of Ford’s muscle car is much direct competition. Dodge has ended production of the Challenger coupe, and the Chevrolet Camaro is driving off into the automotive sunset after the 2024 model year.
That leaves the 2024 Mustang in a soon-to-be muscle car segment of only one. The potent standard powertrain is a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine coupled to a 10-speed automatic. An optional 5.0-liter V8 delivers 480 horsepower in the Mustang GT or 500 in the newly added Dark Horse model. Every Mustang is rear-wheel drive, and the V8 can be optioned with either a 6-speed manual or 10-speed automatic transmission.
Let’s take a look inside the 2024 Mustang and see what it has to offer.
Passenger Room and Comfort
Ford paid a lot of attention to upping the interior quality of the 2024 Mustang. The result is a handsome cabin that looks sporty and feels completely fresh and modern.
Even the standard cloth seats in the base Mustang equipped with the turbo 4-cylinder are supportive and attractive. More heavily bolstered Recaro front seats are available, as are heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, leather upholstery, and power adjustments for the driver and front passenger seat. There is even a flat-bottom steering wheel on every 2024 Mustang to make it easier to smoothly enter or exit Ford’s venerable ‘pony car.’
What’s not to like? Well, anyone relegated to the claustrophobic rear seats will quickly turn into a sworn lifelong enemy. You’ll be fine if you consider the second row merely as an extension of the trunk, not as a place to put anyone above the age of 10.
Features and Tech
Ford also made a point to improve the onboard technology in the 2024 Mustang significantly. Yes, muscle car shoppers are drawn to horsepower and 0-60 mph bragging rights. But smartphone connectivity and an infotainment system that isn’t distracting while burning rubber have become equally important to these same sport-oriented car buyers.
Every Mustang is equipped with a 12.4-inch digital instrument display and a 13.2-inch infotainment touchscreen that runs the latest Ford Sync 4 software. The infotainment screen looks great, the graphics and menus are crisp and clear, and over-the-air updates are included. Wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as are two USB ports, a 6-speaker stereo, and Ford Pass Connect with onboard Wi-Fi.
There’s no shortage of ways to upgrade a Mustang cabin, however. Wireless device charging, heated and ventilated front seats, leather seating upholstery, and 9- or 12-speaker audio systems are offered optionally or fitted as standard to higher trims such as the GT and Dark Horse.
Just because it’s a muscle car doesn’t mean safety is forgotten. Standard driver aids include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping assist, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, rear parking sensors, and more. Safety and assist add-ons consist of adaptive cruise control and adaptive suspension with active pothole mitigation that comes with the optional Performance Package.
Materials and Design
From the driver’s seat, all major controls are within easy reach. The dual digital instrument display and infotainment screen are easily configurable and don’t distract you from powering the Mustang down the road.
A cabin with soft-touch materials and dampened controls is something expected in a luxury sedan or posh SUV, less so in a hardcore muscle car. Thankfully, Ford missed that memo. The quality of interior materials and trim pieces are totally in keeping with the Mustang’s new, more upscale image.
In total, six color schemes are available in the cabin of the new Mustang — though Ford prefers you to use the term “environments.” Standard is Black Onyx, while options include Space Gray, Emberglo, Carmine Red, and Deep Indigo (exclusive to the Dark Horse and Dark Horse Premium trims).
Cargo Room and Flexibility
You might be surprised to learn the 2024 Mustang is an accommodating traveling companion. Trunk volume isn’t what you’d call cavernous, of course, but the 13.5 cubic feet of cargo space in the Mustang coupe is fine for routine shopping or luggage for a weekend getaway. In the convertible, cargo space is slightly less at 11.4 cubic feet in capacity.
