After sitting out the 2023 model year, the Chevrolet Trax reenters the subcompact SUV arena as an invigorated competitor for 2024. The redesigned, second-generation Trax is a significant upgrade over the model it replaces, with a sleeker design, roomier interior, and cutting-edge tech.
Each model in the lineup comes with a 137-horsepower turbocharged 3-cylinder engine paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The 2024 Trax isn’t as powerful as before, but it is more efficient, getting up to 30 mpg in combined driving. The Trax remains exclusively front-wheel drive (FWD), so buyers who require all-wheel drive (AWD) will have to look elsewhere.
Chevy offers a generous number of tech and safety features standard. With all the equipment included at such a reasonable price, the 2024 Chevrolet Trax is a competitive budget choice among subcompact SUVs. Even the top-of-the-line model has a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of less than $25,000. Now, let’s get to talking about what’s inside.
Passenger Room and Comfort
The new 2024 Trax is a couple of inches wider and almost an entire foot longer than before, so it’s more spacious inside. Most models come with a 6-way manually adjustable driver seat, with the highest Activ trim featuring an 8-way power driver seat with 2-way power lumbar adjustment. Heated front seats and a heated steering wheel come standard on the top three grades in the lineup and are available on the rest.
The significantly larger new Trax is now the rear legroom champion in its class with an impressive 38.7 inches – a full three inches more than the old model. In combination with the added width, the Trax can now accommodate full-size adults much more comfortably in the back.
The middle LT and higher trims have automatic climate control, which is always a welcome feature. Chevy didn’t give that roomy backseat any air vents of its own, though, so front passengers may need to give up some airflow if there are passengers in the rear.
All levels of Trax come with standard active noise cancellation to help quiet the cabin, an unexpectedly luxurious feature at this price point.
Features and Tech
The MVPs of smartphone projection, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, are standard in wireless versions across the Trax lineup. All grades also offer the ability to turn the subcompact SUV into a Wi-Fi hotspot.
The central infotainment touchscreen starts at 8 inches, upgraded to an 11-inch touchscreen on upper trims. That bigger screen also has a customizable driver information display instead of the more traditional gauge cluster. Actual knobs and buttons for climate control and audio volume mean you can still adjust vital systems without going through a screen.
A basic 4-speaker audio system is standard on the two starter trims, and a 6-speaker system comes on the higher trims. But there’s no big-name-brand available to rock out to at the tailgate party.
Remote start is standard on all but the base LS, a boon for people who live in less-than-temperate areas.
The Chevy Safety Assist suite of driver aids is standard on every Trax, including automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist with lane departure warning, automatic high beams, a following distance indicator, and forward collision warning.
Materials and Design
Chevrolet designed the 2024 Trax cabin for a more open and airier feel. The added width and lower roofline deliver a more spread-out interior vibe.
Seats are cloth on the lower two trims, leatherette on the highest two trims, and a combination of the two on the middle trim. Interior color choices are plentiful as long as it’s some minor variation on black and gray. Each Trax trim features a different upholstery pattern, like triangles or stripes on the cloth seats, and an accent color – red, blue, or yellow – in stitching or on the dash.
Cargo Room and Flexibility
The 11 inches of extra overall length gives the Chevy Trax room for nearly six additional cubic feet of space with the rear seats up, bringing the cargo space total to 25.6. The back seats split and fold 60/40 for more versatile stuff- and people-hauling options. Fold the rear seats down to expand the cargo capacity to 54.1 cubic feet, average for the segment.
