The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD is a rugged truck that tackles the harshest jobs. Despite its brutish good looks, the Silverado HD has a softer side, one where both driver and passengers can stretch out in comfort and, on the top-line trims, enjoy near luxury-car-like levels of equipment and technology.
The Silverado HD series consists of 2500 and 3500 platforms in a mind-boggling number of possible configurations that include Regular Cab, Double Cab, and Crew Cab with 6-feet 9-inch or 8-feet 2-inch bed choices, single or dual rear axle, and a choice between a 6.6-liter gas or 6.6-liter turbodiesel engine.
In the pecking order of HD trucks, the Silverado equals the Ford F-250/350 Super Duty and Ram 2500/3500 but sits a notch or two below its “Professional Grade” GMC twin, the Sierra HD.
Let’s take a closer look at why the Silverado HD may be your next pickup.
Passenger Room and Comfort
The measure of passenger accommodations inside the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD depends on the cab size. The Regular Cab comfortably seats two adults and even has room for a third person with the center console armrest in the upright position.
The Double Cab and Crew Cab models are more amenable to additional occupants, featuring half or full rear doors and a bench seat. The Crew Cab has more rear-seat legroom and larger side windows than the Double Cab, but both feature additional storage space under the rear seat and modern conveniences like rear air vents and, on LTZ and higher trims, USB charge ports.
Comfort levels are pretty good even on the Work Truck and Custom trims, but moving to higher trims brings a more elegant cabin with more available upscale features such as leather upholstery, 10-way power front seats, a heated steering wheel, and ventilated front seats. The options list for the various trims is extensive, but some features you might expect to be standard, like a tilt/telescoping steering column, are optional on the WT, Custom, and LT trucks.
Features and Tech
The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD pickup is packed with technology and innovation. Of course, the amount and number of features vary by trim level, but even the base WT includes a 7-inch touchscreen radio with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Moving up to the LT or higher trim brings a more robust design featuring a fully digital 12.3-inch instrument cluster with configurable screens. Glance to your right, and you’ll see another screen measuring 13.4 inches and serving as the gateway to the car’s infotainment system. Google built-in gives you access to Google Maps, the Play Store, and Google Assistant, all helpful features on the job site or when traveling to your favorite camping spot.
If you’re towing a trailer, the Silverado offers several clever features to make hooking up and trailering less stressful. Trailer Hitch Guidance uses the rear backup camera and guidelines to help line up your hitch ball with the trailer’s coupler. Once lined up, Hitch View displays a zoomed-in view so you can get an exact fit.
Materials and Design
Regarding interior design, the Silverado HD has two distinct personalities. The Work Truck and Custom feature a rugged interior, with a traditional analog instrument cluster and big knobs and dials we found easy to operate when wearing thick work gloves. There’s lots of easy-to-clean vinyl in areas that are most likely to get dirty, too. Chevy supplies storage space throughout the cabin, with deep door pockets large enough to fit a water bottle, dual glove boxes, and a massive folding center armrest console with even more places to hide phones, tablets, or clipboards.
The interior feels completely different once you move to the LT and higher trims. The dash design looks more Cadillac than Chevy, with a sleek design, upgraded soft-touch materials, and two massive digital displays, one for the instrument cluster and one for the infotainment system.
On ZR2 and High Country models, a full-length center console provides even more storage, leather upholstery, and high-end options such as a head-up display, rear camera mirror, a power sunroof, and even a console-mounted safe.
Cargo Room and Flexibility
The Silverado HD’s cargo and flexibility aren’t so much inside the cab but inside the bed. The Silverado HD’s high bed walls and low floor combine to create a cargo bay with more volume than the closest competitor. It includes 12 tie-downs rated at 500 pounds each, allowing for hefty loads. The bed can be upgraded with a rugged bedliner, a 120-volt outlet, and additional storage units.
But the Silverado HD’s available Multi-Flex tailgate is the most impressive feature, behaving like six tailgates in one. It can be folded down like a standard tailgate or at the midpoint to act like a small work surface. There’s also a flip-up load stop to hold cargo in place that exceeds the bed length. The mid-section inner gate can rotate down another 90 degrees and serve as a step with the gate fully down.
