Luxury Compact SUV

Let’s Take a Look Inside the 2024 Cadillac XT4

The 2024 Cadillac XT4 is a 5-seat subcompact SUV delivering more stretch-out room than the term “subcompact” implies. In truth, it falls somewhere between compact and subcompact. Anchoring Cadillac’s stable of SUVs, the XT4 provides all the class and attention to detail for which the Cadillac brand is known. It’s no Escalade mini-me, but Cadillac crams plenty of convenience features and high tech into this head-turning unit.

Sneaking in under $40,000, the XT4 is among the most affordable luxury SUVs on the market. Its standard turbocharged 4-cylinder engine generates an impressive 235 horsepower, which is channeled through the front wheels or all four if you opt for all-wheel drive (AWD). A 9-speed automatic transmission divvies up the power while also helping the XT4 deliver up to a respectable 26 mpg in mixed city-and-highway driving.

What’s New

With five years of production under its belt, the XT4 rolled into 2024 with some significant updates. They encompass the XT4’s face and tail, as well as some new lighting elements and wheel designs. Although we applaud those changes, we argue the biggest news is inside the cabin — namely, the curved display stretching across nearly two-thirds of the dashboard beginning at the driver’s door. Measured on the diagonal, it is 33 inches, housing driver information as well as overseeing the infotainment system with Google built-in.

Passenger Room and Comfort

Two rows of seats accommodate up to five passengers. Subcompact (and even many compact) SUVs are less than welcoming to second-row passengers. Here, however, the XT4 shines among its peers with better-than-average rear-seat legroom of 39.5 inches. Although the second row can accommodate three passengers, two will be more comfortable for longer stints. That is to say, the rear-seat shoulder and hip room is about average for the segment. Those in the front will be quite pleased with the elbow and legroom.

Features and Technology

The new 33-inch LED driver-info/infotainment display boasts a 7-speaker audio system (a 14-speaker AKG premium system is available), navigation capability, voice recognition, connected apps, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Wi-Fi capability is also standard. Three USB-A ports and one USB-C port help keep devices charged. Two 12-volt power ports are in the cabin.

Power front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a power rear liftgate, and proximity keyless entry with push-button start are among the XT4’s highly sought-after standard convenience features. The safety alert seat vibrates, providing an extra degree of warning for some safety alerts. Active noise cancellation contributes to the cabin’s calm. Extra touches include mini-umbrella holders in the front doors, as well as six cup holders and water bottle holders scattered around the cabin.

Materials and Design

You will find more luxurious furnishings in rivals like the Audi A3 and Jaguar E-Pace; however, we think the XT4 has enough soft-touch surfaces and interesting details to please most drivers. The entry-level Luxury grade employs faux leather for the seats, upper door panels, and other surfaces. Moving up to the Premium Luxury trim gains you leather surfaces. Stepping up to the Sport grade loses the leather, but you can acquire it in the options list.

Cargo Room and Flexibility

If you have lots of cargo hauling in your future, we’d steer you away from subcompact SUVs to something farther up the size-class ladder. For Cadillac, that would be the XT5 or XT6. With that said, for a small SUV, the XT4 acquits itself rather impressively where cargo room is concerned.

As with passenger space, the XT4 slides into the middle of the luxury mix of compact and subcompact SUVs. With the second row folded, it delivers about the same cargo capacity (48.9 cubic feet) as the Audi Q3 and Lexus NX. With the rear seats up, the XT4 has 22.5 cubic feet of space, enough to haul more than the average load claimed by its compact and subcompact competitors.
