The BMW X6, you might recall, is one of the first SUVs offered with a sleek, coupe-like roofline. Based on the X5, the X6 spawned others like the Porsche Cayenne Coupe, the Mercedes GLE Coupe, and the Audi Q8, to name just a few. Each of these SUVs had one thing in common: a fastback roofline that improved aesthetics but at the expense of rear headroom and cargo volume.
Compared to the X5, the 2024 BMW X6 has about two inches less rear legroom and 1.2 inches less headroom. And aft of its folding back seat, the X6 has 27.4 cubic feet of cargo room versus 33.9 for the X5. While that is indeed a reduction, the X6 still has plenty of room for your weekly groceries or golf clubs.
Most importantly, the X6 drives like a BMW, aided by standard adaptive suspension. The X6 driving experience is engaging, whether you’re in the 6-cylinder xDrive40i, which has 275 horsepower, the M60i, which is powered by a twin-turbo V8 with 523 horsepower, or the almighty X6 M Competition, which has the same engine tuned to produce a staggering 617 horsepower. Adding security in wintry conditions and all-weather traction is BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, which comes standard on all 2024 BMW X6 models.
Let’s take a look inside the 2024 BMW X6, which has been restyled for 2024 and has a large digital instrument cluster and a massive 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, both housed under a single curved glass display.
Passenger Room and Comfort
While the BMW X6’s fastback roofline certainly doesn’t help interior volume, the BMW X6 hasn’t completely sacrificed practicality for style. This BMW sport ute remains quite comfortable for four adults and their luggage.
Folks who buy the base BMW X6 get a high-quality synthetic leather upholstery called Sensafin, with Merino leather available as an option. The heated front seats are power-adjustable in 16 ways, with memory, and other standard comfort-enhancing amenities include multicolor ambient interior lighting and dual-zone automatic climate control. Also standard on the 2024 BMW X6 is a large panoramic moonroof and a power liftgate.
Naturally, back-seat passengers aren’t forgotten in a vehicle of the X6’s caliber. In addition to a fold-down center armrest offering a storage compartment and two drink holders, the 2024 C6 is equipped with rear climate controls, a pair of pull-up sun shades for the back glass, and USB-C ports in the backrest of each front seat.
Features and Tech
The 2024 BMW X6 comes loaded with features and tech. To begin, the base powertrain now has a 48-volt mild hybrid system that – totally unbeknownst to the driver — momentarily adds torque for improved performance, silkier power delivery, and better fuel economy. All 2024 X6 models also have paddle shifters and adaptive suspension with Sport, Comfort, and Eco Pro driving modes.
Inside, an all-new dash takes center stage for 2024. Unmissable, it’s highlighted by a single curved glass panel that houses a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a massive 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen. The infotainment system responds to touch and voice commands or inputs from the rotary iDrive controller on the X6’s center console.
Regarding standard infotainment, the base X6 features a 10-speaker audio system and navigation, plus Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM 360L, BMW connected services, and Bluetooth phone and music streaming. Also notable: Every X6 has BMW Assist eCall, which automatically calls for help if the X6 is involved in a serious accident.
Similarly, standard safety tech abounds on the South Carolina-built X6. In addition to expected features such as a forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, you get blind-spot monitoring, a lane-departure warning, and posted speed limit information. We also like the standard rear cross-traffic detection, which alerts the driver whenever vehicles are about to pass behind the X6 when it’s in reverse.
Other standard tech features of note on the 2024 BMW X6 include heated side mirrors and adaptive LED headlights with automatic high beams. Also, all versions of the X6 get Comfort Access keyless entry, which means you can unlock and start this stylish 5-seat SUV with the key never leaving your purse or pocket.
Among the options (available either in packages or as standalone features) are the leather upholstery, adaptive cruise control (with hands-off driving at speeds of up to 85 mph), 4-zone automatic climate control, a head-up display, massaging seats, a 360-degree around-view monitor, and active parking programs.
Materials and Design
Inside the 2024 BMW X6, buyers get their choice of standard Sensafin faux leather upholstery or optional Merino leather. Both are available in several colors, both with a rich and billowy appearance enhanced by attractive quilt-style stitching.
The interior trim of the X6 is equally varied, with possibilities that range from open-pore and high-gloss wood offerings to others, such as matte-finish Anthracite Brown Poplar or Fineline Black Wood. The finish of each, to be expected, is extraordinary.
Because so many of the controls and features can be handled by the iDrive controller or the large touchscreen, the dash of the BMW X6 looks handsomely uncluttered, which we quite like. We also appreciate the presence of a genuine volume knob for the stereo, positioned within easy reach on the center console.
Cargo Room and Flexibility
The 2024 BMW X6 has 27.4 cubic feet of cargo room behind its rear seat and nearly 60 cubic feet with the 60/40-split seat folded forward. While that’s a bit less than the BMW X5, the X6 nevertheless remains a useful SUV. One, in fact, that compares quite favorably in cargo capacity to the Porsche Cayenne Coupe, which has only 21 and 53 cubic feet, respectively. Owing to the slant of the X6’s roof, taller items need to be positioned forward on the cargo floor.
While it’s true that BMW’s compact X3 has a bit more cargo space than the X6, we suspect most folks drawn to the X6 for its head-turning style don’t really give a hoot. Instead, they delight in having a big BMW SUV with presence, one that exudes style but still has the athletic driving manners for which the German marque is famous.
