Compact electric SUVs are now firmly mainstream and more approachable than ever. If you need proof of that, just look at the 2025 Ford Mustang Mach-E and 2025 Volkswagen ID.4. Both 5-passenger battery-powered SUVs boast ranges of near or over 300 miles, excellent technology, and prices in or just below the $40,000 bracket.
For all their similarities, the Ford Mustang Mach-E and VW ID.4 bring their strengths and identities to the table. Here’s how they compare to each other.
2025 Ford Mustang Mach-E
One of Ford’s newest and most innovative vehicles takes part of its name from one of the brand’s oldest icons. Yes, the Ford Mustang Mach-E honors its coupe and convertible Mustang sports car cousins, but in the form of a practical, all-electric SUV. We think the formula works. The Mustang Mach-E boasts great range, excellent technology, a drainable front trunk (frunk), and for 2025 an even lower price.
Ford Mustang Mach-E Highlights
Range: The 2025 Mustang Mach-E can travel up to 320 miles between charges. That’s impressive for this class, and quite a bit more than the ID.4’s max of 291 miles. Furthermore, the Mustang Mach-E can take advantage of Tesla Supercharger stations.
BlueCruise: Ford’s BlueCruise system is among the most impressive hands-free driving systems we’ve tested, and it’s even better this year in the Mustang Mach-E. Version 1.5 debuts in this model, now with the ability to automatically change lanes. The ID.4 doesn’t have such an innovative semi-autonomous driving system.
Big touchscreen: Every Ford Mustang Mach-E boasts a large, vertically oriented 15.5-inch touchscreen, which beats the size of the ID.4’s 12.9-inch display. We’ve found the learning curve to be short and the response time to be good. We like the system even more when listening to the available B&O premium audio system.

2025 Volkswagen ID.4
The Volkswagen ID.4 was among the first of the latest crop of electric SUVs, debuting in 2021 just like its Ford Mustang Mach-E rival here. As with the Ford, the ID.4 offers a choice of rear- or all-wheel drive and battery sizes. For 2025, the first ID.4 models arriving for sale are the more powerful, longer-range Pro models.
Volkswagen ID.4 Highlights
3-year charging plan: All 2025 VW ID.4 models include a 3-year Electrify America Pass+ membership with 500 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of charging included for public charging. This is a great asset when you need to juice up away from home.
ID.Light: Aesthetically interesting and functional at the same time, this LED strip across the dash conveys information, such as navigation directions, in a simple-to-see-and-understand way. We dig the visuals.
IQ.Drive: While not hands-free, this semi-autonomous driving system combines adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist to take a lot of the stress from the grind of the daily freeway commute. It also bundles safety features like blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and automatic emergency braking.
