If you check out the options available to consumers in the electric pickup truck market, you’ll see just a few offerings at the moment — although the number is rising. The 2024 GMC Hummer EV Pickup and Rivian R1T are two of the first in the modern crop of electric pickups and enjoy the latest technology and engineering. The GMC Hummer EV Pickup and Rivian R1T provide buyers with power, off-road capability, and the technology needed to make getting around easier, whether that’s around town or on an off-road adventure.
These two all-electric trucks enjoy several strong points; let’s check them out.
2024 GMC Hummer EV Pickup
Big, burly, powerful — and quiet. GMC’s Hummer all-electric pickup attracts attention as it moves down the road. Its exterior design stays true to the original decades-old Hummer, derived from the military Humvee vehicle. However, this version works hard to shake off the criticisms of the original models.
It’s a very large vehicle, but because it is a pickup truck, it seats just five people. However, they’ll be very comfortable as the interior cabin is cavernous. The GMC Hummer EV is filled with technology of all sorts, much of it aimed at improving the truck’s driving capability, including UltraVision, CrabWalk mode, Super Cruise, and more.
There are four trim levels of the Hummer, if you include the EV 3 Omega Edition and EV Edition 1. The EV 2 is the base model and is powered by a dual-motor setup generating 570 horsepower. GMC estimates the range is 311 miles. However, tri-motor versions can travel an estimated 381 miles on a full charge and put out up to 1,000 horsepower. Prices start at $98,845, including destination charge.
GMC Hummer EV Pickup Highlights
Super Cruise: The standard Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system allows for hands-free driving on more than 400,000 miles of highway in North America.
Multiple screens: The available UltraVision system employs up to 18 camera views, so you can see everything around you — and even under you — when parking and off-roading. The views are sharply displayed on the standard 13.4-inch central touchscreen display.
Infinity Roof: The Hummer EV Pickup’s available Infinity Roof lets occupants enjoy the outdoors just a little more. It’s comprised of removable roof panels, which were called T-tops back in the day.

2024 Rivian R1T
The Rivian R1T is a contrast to the GMC Hummer EV in some ways. It’s produced by a startup rather than one of the big guys (General Motors, in the case of the GMC Hummer EV), and although it has a unique look, the Rivian’s aesthetics are subtle compared to the GMC Hummer.
While most consider it a full-size model, the Rivian R1T is closer in size to a midsize pickup with room for five passengers. The R1T’s interior boasts practical features and excellent design. It’s filled with premium materials and features a layout that makes perfect sense, much of that focused on the customizable 15.6-inch center-mounted touchscreen. Then there is the innovative Gear Tunnel, an 11-cubic-foot space between the back of the cabin and the rear wheel arches where you can securely store cargo.
Equipped with a 533-hp dual-motor setup that allows you to escape almost any situation on or off-road, racing to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds. You can move up to the 665-hp Performance Dual-Motor version, which does the 0-60 mph sprint in 3.6 seconds, or the 835-hp Quad Motor model, which drops that time to just 3 seconds. It can travel anywhere from 270 miles to 420 miles on a single charge, depending upon its configuration. The R1T has an air suspension system with adaptive shock absorbers and an electro-hydraulic roll control system that does away with traditional anti-roll bars. Range is impressive: The EPA rates the 2024 Rivian R1T with a max range of 410 miles. Prices start at $71,700, including destination charges.
Rivian R1T Highlights
Driving modes: Rivian’s All-Purpose driving mode, which drivers will use most of the time, self-adjusts the suspension to suit driving conditions, including lowering the ride height to improve freeway aerodynamics. Also, if you’re concerned about having enough juice to get to a charger, Conserve mode engages just the front-wheel drive and lowers the ride height for even more efficiency.
Better range and efficiency: It’s no secret that the best efficiency isn’t a priority for the Hummer EV, but it’s worth pointing out how much more efficient the Rivian is. The EPA estimates that the monthly fuel cost for the Rivian is $45 lower than the Hummer.
Driver+: Every new R1T comes with this standard set of driver assistance features. It includes forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. The system has 11 cameras, five radars, and 12 ultrasonic sensors.

Similarities
The GMC Hummer EV Pickup and Rivian R1T provide power and performance in spades. They use technology to make them equally at home on or off-road. Each offers a variety of unique features aimed at attracting buyers, and each seats up to five.
Conclusion
The GMC Hummer EV Pickup looks like a rough-and-rugged behemoth, and has the hardware and software to back up its presence. The more efficient Rivian R1T looks much more like a mainstream pickup, and is capable of handling daily commuting and off-road fun. The GMC Hummer EV Pickup is notably more expensive — starting at nearly $100,000. It provides impressive performance numbers, but it’s not an everyday pickup, so we recommend the Rivian R1T.
