It's the engine that separates the Cooper S from the base Cooper, delivering noticeably quicker acceleration and a more spirited driving experience overall. Paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox, this particular car gives the driver complete control over every gear change, making it one of the more engaging front-wheel-drive hatchbacks you'll find at any price point. The manual transmission is increasingly rare in today's market, and for enthusiasts, it's a major selling point. Short throws, a sporty clutch feel, and eager throttle response make this combination genuinely fun to drive on winding roads and equally competent in Bay Area stop-and-go traffic once you get the feel for it. ===== MINI Cooper S Features and Interior ===== ==== Cooper S Trim Upgrades ==== The Cooper S trim builds on the standard Cooper with sport-tuned suspension, larger brakes, and unique exterior styling cues including the signature twin exhaust outlets and S badging. Inside, the 2012 Cooper S offers a distinctive, retro-modern cabin with the iconic large center speedometer, supportive sport seats, and a layout that wraps around the driver in an intentional, purposeful way. Connectivity and comfort features typical of this generation include air conditioning, power windows, and audio integration. The rear hatch opens to a usable cargo area that surprises most buyers more practical than the exterior footprint suggests. ===== MINI Cooper S Reliability and Ownership ===== The 2012 MINI Cooper S has a passionate owner community and a strong enthusiast following, which means parts availability, independent service shops, and online resources are plentiful. That said, prospective buyers should go in informed: the N18 turbocharged engine in this generation responds well to regular oil changes ideally with quality synthetic oil and staying on top of that schedule is the single biggest factor in long-term reliability. Common ownership topics for this era include valve cover gasket checks, coolant system maintenance, and ensuring the turbo has been properly cared for.
