Built to Lotus's signature ethos of light weight and driver engagement, this example takes that philosophy considerably further courtesy of an extensively built engine completed in 2009 by Secant Vehicles one of the most respected names in Lotus and Exige performance builds. The factory 1.8-liter four-cylinder has been bored out to 2.0 liters and built from the ground up for both durability and serious power, with forged pistons, new piston rings, pins, and pin locks installed alongside a standard 9.5:1 compression ratio. The block was honed and machined, the rotating assembly rebalanced, and the cylinder head resurfaced, while upgraded valve springs and head studs were fitted to handle the increased cylinder pressures that come with forced induction. Further refinements include a new mechanical timing chain tensioner, an upgraded crankshaft sprocket for the balance shaft chain, and an oil pan modified with added baffling and trap doors to maintain consistent oil control under hard cornering and sustained high-RPM use. Power is delivered by an M62 supercharger running 17 psi of boost, pushing output from the factory-rated 190 horsepower to 280 horsepower, with the engine now capable of revving to 7,200 rpm. An air-to-water intercooling system manages charge temperatures, while a fully calibrated GM factory ECM handles engine management. Behind the engine sits the 5-speed manual gearbox with a 4.05 final drive and a limited-slip differential, paired with new high-strength half shafts to reliably transmit the car's substantially increased output. The Secant engine mounting system and refinements to shift feel round out a build focused as much on drivability and longevity as outright power. Combining the Elise's renowned lightweight chassis and pure driving dynamics with a meticulously executed, well-documented performance build, this California Edition offers a rare opportunity to acquire a Lotus Elise that delivers dramatically more performance than its factory specification while retaining the visceral, connected driving experience the model is celebrated for.
