To appreciate it, you have to look back to its origin. Honda unveiled the SSM Concept at the 1995 Tokyo Auto Show, a preview of the high-revving roadster that would launch in April 1999 as the S2000. The formula was brilliantly simple: a naturally aspirated 2.0L inline-four up front (the 2000 reflecting its displacement in cubic centimeters), a razor-sharp 6-speed manual, and power delivered to the rear wheels. On paper it sounded similar to the Mazda Miata, but in execution the S2000 was far more sophisticated and far more expensive. Adjusted for inflation, its original MSRP would be just under $55,000 today. Compare that to the roughly $27,775 cost of a brand-new Miata, and it s clear Honda positioned the S2000 as a premium, no-compromises driver s car. Values today reflect that. Just a year ago, a mint 2000 S2000 was valued around $46,000, marking a strong 10% year-over-year increase. And with its reliability, engineering purity, and cult-favorite status, appreciation doesn t seem to be slowing. Performance was impressive from the start comparable to a BMW M Roadster or Porsche Boxster S but wrapped in a lighter, 2,800-lb package.
