Driving Impressions

The quickest M4 is the 523-horsepower Competition xDrive Coupe, which can accelerate from standstill to 60 mph in only 3.4 seconds. At its entry level, the M4 produces a perfectly respectable 473 hp, enabling a rapid sprint time of 4.1 seconds. To compare, the Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 has 443 horses and hits 60 mph 0.1 of a second sooner than the M4 Coupe &#8212; we’ll attribute this to the extra traction from a standard all-wheel drive system.
Purists demanding a manual transmission will want the base M4. For enthusiasts, we think the manual shift/front-engine/rear-drive combination is fantastic. M4 Competition versions have more power yet come exclusively with an 8-speed automatic.
An adaptive M-tuned suspension is standard across the lineup, with settings from pliable to sporty. Whenever we’ve driven a BMW M car, we’ve always been impressed by how well-judged everything is, making it perfectly acceptable for daily drives and perhaps less frequent canyon-road thrills. That’s certainly true of this M4. We also like the steering feel (although the optional Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel might be too thick for some) and the always-reassuring brake pedal feel.
<h3>Fuel Economy</h3>
Rear-wheel-drive versions of the M4 achieve about 19 mpg in combined city/highway driving. Subtract one mile per gallon when all-wheel drive is in the mix. BMW engines are often the most efficient of their class, but not this time. The Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 Coupe manages 23 mpg combined.

Two Body Styles

Although the regular 4 Series lineup includes a 4-door Gran Coupe version, this collection of M4 models is limited to just the 2-door Coupe and Convertible variants. Anyone wanting a high-performance compact sedan only has to walk a few steps across the BMW dealership floor to check out the M3. And buyers with their heart set on a soft-top M4 should know that it’s available solely in Competition guise with all-wheel drive &#8212; it’s the top-of-the-line choice.

BMW Curved Display 
This standard feature in the 2026 M4 includes a digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch infotainment screen. This is the technological heart of the cabin and offers features like augmented video for navigation and Remote View through the MyBMW app to check on the car’s surroundings.
iDrive 
We think BMW’s infotainment system is user-friendly, with a smart menu structure that optimizes efficiency and reduces distractions while driving.
Harman Kardon audio 
An excellent 16-speaker, 464-watt surround-sound system is standard in every new M4.
Outstanding engine 
We love a BMW engine, especially when it has six cylinders in a line. The inherently smooth configuration is a BMW specialty. Everything is superb, from the power delivery to the sound.

This roof is lighter than steel, reducing overall weight and lowering the center of gravity for optimum dynamics. And it’s standard in the 2026 M4.

Sport seats up front provide plenty of support, holding their occupants snugly through fast corners. We’ve found this adds to a greater sense of confidence, which is also enhanced by intelligent ergonomics. Not that the 2026 M4 is focused purely on performance. There’s still fine leather upholstery as standard, plus a lot of technology that we&#8217;ve come to appreciate and would miss if it wasn’t there — like phone integration and wireless charging.
As a compact car, the M4 isn’t the best choice for regularly transporting passengers in the back seat. Rear legroom in the Coupe is only 34.7 inches (still more than a <a href="https://www.kbb.com/ford/mustang/">Ford Mustang</a>), and the low roof impacts rear headroom. We think the trunk space of 12 cubic feet (10.6 in the Convertible) is acceptable. Interestingly, the smaller and cheaper BMW M2 has a bigger trunk.

In a way, this makes more sense as one of those &#8220;if I won the lottery&#8221; cars than something like an Aston Martin. Such a lucky person could of course buy both, but we have a feeling they’d end up spending more time in the M4. After all, who wants to drive around solely in an exotic machine, where it’s vulnerable to the vagaries of life on the road? But the M4 retains an everyday usability, the talents and tech to tackle long journeys, and the corner-carving chops to thrill even the most jaded enthusiast.
<a href="http://www.kbb.com/bmw/">BMW</a> has a long and enviable reputation for making cars that balance the demands of thrill-seekers with the requirements of regular people, while still exuding a certain prestige. The M4 is yet another sublime creation.

Unsurprisingly for an enthusiast machine, Competition versions of the M4 &#8212; the ones with the most power &#8212; are popular. So who are we to recommend otherwise?
The <a href="https://www.kbb.com/mercedes-benz/mercedes-amg-cle/">Mercedes-AMG CLE</a> is an obvious rival, because it’s also available as a coupe or convertible (aka cabriolet). It starts a little below the M4. If four doors are acceptable, the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/bmw/m3/">BMW M3</a> also comes in just under the M4, price-wise. The <a href="https://www.kbb.com/audi/rs-5-sportback/">Audi RS 5 Sportback</a> should be priced similarly, while the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/cadillac/ct4-v/">Cadillac CT4-V</a> Blackwing is a relative bargain.

Both coupe and convertible 2026 BMW M4 variants begin with an ample 473 hp and 406 lb-ft emanating from a turbocharged 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine, driving the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission. The Competition treatment boosts that to 503 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque and gains an 8-speed automatic transmission. When xDrive equips the M4, output rises again to 523 hp (same torque figure).

<h3>4-Year/50,000-Mile Warranty</h3>
BMW covers its vehicles and powertrains with a warranty lasting four years or 50,000 miles, whichever occurs first. These terms are typical for European luxury car makers. There’s also roadside assistance for the first four years, with unlimited mileage, plus three years or 36,000 miles of free scheduled maintenance.
<h3>Safety Ratings</h3>
The overall 4 Series (of which the M4 is a part) hasn’t been crash-tested by any agencies in the United States, but it has earned a maximum score of five stars from the Euro NCAP safety program. Standard safety features include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert.

The Volkswagen Atlas is one of the roomiest and most family-friendly options in midsize 3-row SUVs and comes with a generous list of standard features.

The Volkswagen Atlas is powered by a 269-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder engine matched with an 8-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD). Turbo 4-cylinder engines in this class are a bit of a mixed bag, and this is one of the good ones.
We’re satisfied with the confident power delivery and smooth refinement of this engine. Even though it’s one of the largest vehicles in its class, the Atlas still manages to deliver some of the same qualities that have long made Volkswagen vehicles so uniquely satisfying to pilot.
We found the Atlas to be an easy SUV to drive, but it isn’t as easy to wheel around a tight parking lot as the smaller Toyota Highlander, for instance. However, that’s the unavoidable trade-off for more passenger and cargo room. We’ve found highway ride comfort and cabin noise slightly more refined than the average for this segment, as we hope for in a vehicle from a German brand.
<h3>Fuel Economy</h3>
The Volkswagen Atlas gets 20 city/26 highway/23 combined mpg with front-wheel drive and 19 city/26 highway/21 combined mpg with all-wheel drive. These ratings are about average for a midsize 3-row SUV, but more fuel-efficient hybrids like the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/toyota/grand-highlander-hybrid/">Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid</a> and <a href="https://www.kbb.com/toyota/grand-highlander-hybrid/">Hyundai Palisade Hybrid</a> are getting more common in this segment.

German Design

The Volkswagen Atlas carries a sophisticated subtlety that defines the VW brand. The R-line models add a sportier look with a gloss black grille and 21-inch wheels. The Peak Edition adds a more rugged look that includes blacked-out exterior trim, 18-inch black alloy wheels with all-terrain tires, and unique body cladding.

Turbo engine 
A turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with performance similar to the old V6 powers every 2026 Volkswagen Atlas. It strikes a nice balance of pep and efficiency.
12-inch infotainment screen 
A 12-inch screen is the centerpiece of the interior of the Atlas. It has wireless smartphone connectivity, and six USB-C ports come standard (up to eight are available).
Digital Cockpit Pro 
The standard Volkswagen Digital Cockpit Pro is one of our favorite digital gauge clusters. The Atlas has a 10.25-inch fully configurable display that can show everything you want to see and nothing you don’t.
Standard comfort features 
The Atlas has an impressive list of standard features, including 3-zone automatic climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and more.
IQ.DRIVE 
The Atlas comes standard with IQ.DRIVE driver assistance technology. It bundles features like lane centering, blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go technology.
Roomy 3-row seating 
The Volkswagen Atlas is among the best in its class regarding third-row legroom and headroom. Not all 3-row SUVs are created equal, but the roomy Atlas is an excellent choice if you regularly haul a full complement of passengers.

Large Interior

The interior of the Volkswagen Atlas boasts a more premium look and feel than its price tag suggests. It’s also packed with desirable standard features like heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, wireless phone charging, tri-zone climate control, and a digital gauge cluster.
Interior space is one of the biggest strengths of the Atlas. This is a 3-row SUV for families who will actually use the third row regularly. It’s still no minivan, but the way-back seats in the Atlas have 33.7 inches of legroom, and we had little trouble climbing back there. That’s 2.3 inches more than the Kia Telluride, a meaningful advantage.
For such a roomy interior, you might expect the Atlas to be an 8-seater, but it maxes out at seven. There are only two seats in the third row, but without a middle seat in the way, these seats have decent width, meaning two adults can actually fit back there without having to cuddle. Every trim comes standard with second-row bench seating, and captain’s chairs are optional in all but he base trim.
The Atlas has 20.6 cubic feet of cargo room behind the third row, 55.5 cubic feet behind the second row, and a whopping 96.8 cubic feet when all of the rear seats are folded down. That’s about average for cargo room behind the third row, but among the roomiest in its class for space behind the first and second rows.
We have a couple of small gripes: Some of the steering wheel controls, like the horizontal volume buttons and lack of a volume knob, are not very intuitive and are hard to get used to. The menu to control SiriusXM also feels clumsy.

Midsize <a href="https://www.kbb.com/suv/best-3-row-suvs/">3-row SUVs</a> have become America’s preferred way of shuttling families who need more than five seats, but not all of them are as family-friendly as they seem. Just ask the passengers who have to sit in the third row. The Volkswagen Atlas is a midsize SUV with the style and capability that draws families to SUVs, but with a huge interior that’s actually comfortable in the way-back seats. Adult-friendly third-row seating isn’t its only strength; the Atlas also boasts good cargo space, a pleasant driving experience, and a generous list of standard features that help make it a strong value choice in its competitive class. The standard engine in the Volkswagen Atlas is a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. This engine makes more torque than both of the discontinued Atlas engines from before its 2024 refresh, and almost as much horsepower as the old V6.
The Atlas still boasts a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds. Like most of its rivals, front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is optional.
<h3>4-Year/50,000-Mile Warranty</h3>
The Atlas is backed by 4-year/50,000-mile basic and powertrain coverage. That’s a longer basic warranty than most competitors but a shorter powertrain warranty. Given Volkswagen’s middling track record when it comes to reliability, warranty protection should be an important consideration. Volkswagen includes complimentary maintenance for two years or up to 20,000 miles.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (<a href="https://www.iihs.org/ratings/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IIHS</a>) has awarded the Atlas with its Top Safety Pick award, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (<a href="https://www.nhtsa.gov/ratings" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NHTSA</a>) rated it with its highest 5-Star overall safety rating.
