Driving Impressions

The M5 develops a total of 717 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque, making it the most powerful M5 to date. Which is really saying something. This is an awesome amount of muscle, capable of propelling the sedan from standstill to 60 mph in a rapid 3.4 seconds (the Touring is a tenth slower). And it just keeps dashing, with the ability to thrust from 50 mph to 75 mph in a mere 2.2 seconds. The M5 also has a 47-hp edge over the much pricier Porsche Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid, although that doesn’t translate to a faster sprint time. This Porsche clocks in at three seconds flat.
Which brings us to our one minor gripe. For all that impressive muscle, the 2026 M5’s extra hybrid hardware has added weight, making it a couple of tenths of a second slower to 60 mph than its 600-hp predecessor. We’re prepared to accept, though, that this may be academic while in the throes of acceleration.
An adaptive M-tuned suspension is part of the whole package, enhancing comfort at one end of the dynamics envelope, while containing body roll at the other. Integral Active Steering — BMW’s name for rear-wheel steering — is also standard in the 2026 M5, contributing to agility and maneuverability, and making this midsize car seem a tad smaller than it really is. We also like how the steering feels — there’s a decent amount of tactile feedback. And the brakes hit the usual high level of excellence that we admire so much in BMW cars.
<h3>Fuel Economy</h3>
BMW didn’t pair a twin-turbocharged V8 with an electric motor to make the M5 a fuel-sipper. The idea was to strap together two sources of power for the sheer thrill of it. These M5 variants are plug-in hybrids, yet still subject to a gas guzzler tax. The M5 sedan achieves the equivalent of 50 mpg combined (50 MPGe) or 14 mpg combined if the battery doesn’t have sufficient juice. The electric-only range is 27 miles.
The M5 Touring wagon manages 54 MPGe combined, or 13 mpg combined, with a battery-powered range of 25 miles.
For comparison, the Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid sedan runs to 59 MPGe combined/23 mpg combined, while its battery is capable of 43 miles.

Apart from the obvious difference of a wagon body with the M5 Touring, the M5 has its own look to differentiate it from the rest of the 5 Series sedan lineup. This includes various aerodynamic additions, a wider body with redesigned wheel arches to accommodate the large wheel/tire combination, and a quad exhaust system — plus a palette of exclusive metallic paint choices that includes Isle of Man Green, Marina Bay Blue, and the matte Frozen Deep Grey.
Under the skin, BMW has increased the body’s rigidity compared with the regular 5 Series. The company also offers an optional carbon roof for the sedan, reducing weight by 66 pounds and lowering the center of gravity.

BMW Curved Display 
A common sight in contemporary BMW vehicles, but — in our opinion — no less impressive because of it. This is the single housing that contains the 12.3-inch configurable instrument cluster and the 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, both with sharp graphics. BMW also offers streaming and gaming in the M5.
M Hybrid modes 
In Comfort mode, the system leans more on the electric motor. In Sport and Sport Plus, the combustion engine is always in action. The two optional Dynamic and Dynamic Plus modes are for track use, delivering as much power as possible, for either a series of laps (Dynamic) or a quicker burst (Dynamic Plus).
Adaptive LED headlights with cornering function 
This is one of those features we’ve really liked in other vehicles and miss when it’s not there. Being able to throw light into corners is especially useful given how fast the M5 can zip around them.
Bowers &amp; Wilkins audio 
Often at the pricier end of BMW’s options lists, this 18-speaker/655-watt surround-sound system is standard in the M5. We love B&amp;W stuff for the clarity, power, and detail.
Carbon ceramic brakes 
An expensive option, but one we’d recommend to anyone planning to take their M5 for a few track-day blasts. They’re strong, fade-free, warp-free, and 55 pounds lighter than the standard setup. These are offered with the M5 Touring as well.
BMW Digital Key Plus 
M5 owners and a lucky few friends and family members can access and drive the M5 using their Apple iPhone, Apple Watch, or Android device.

Intelligent Interior

Interior

High tech and fine leather combine with well-cushioned and well-shaped front seats to give the M5 the upscale air it deserves. We already like the cabin of the regular 5 Series and appreciate its exemplary build quality as well as the intelligent layout. Although BMW says the hybrid battery hasn’t encroached upon cabin or cargo space, the M5 has lost of bit of rear legroom, shrinking from 37.5 inches of rear legroom to 36.2 inches. It&#8217;s also impacted the trunk, which is a generous 18.4 cubic feet in the regular sedan and just 16.5 in the M5 sedan. The M5 Touring adds wagon versatility and practicality, with 17.7 cubic feet behind the 40/20/40 rear seats, opening out to 57.6 cubic feet when they’re folded down.

Stunning. Gobsmacking. Useful. With that third word, we’re thinking of the M5 Touring wagon more than the M5 sedan, but the latter has quite a large trunk, nevertheless.
We can imagine someone from <a href="https://www.kbb.com/bmw/">BMW</a> putting on their best Liam Neeson voice and saying the company has made a car with a particular set of skills. Of course, the M5 has had these skills honed over a long career of being the sportiest, highest-performance iteration of the wonderful BMW 5 Series midsize luxury car. This latest generation debuted last year and rewrites the usual performance-car script by packing a plug-in hybrid drivetrain.

There’s also a gas guzzler tax of $2,100 for the M5 sedan and $2,600 for the Touring wagon that should be added to those figures.
Looking at possible rivals, in order to get even close to the M5’s power in the (admittedly larger) <a href="https://www.kbb.com/porsche/panamera/">Porsche Panamera</a> means going for the Turbo E-Hybrid, which starts above $200K. There’s also the 577-horsepower <a href="https://www.kbb.com/mercedes-benz/mercedes-amg-e-class/">Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid</a> sedan, beginning below the M5, while the 621-hp <a href="https://www.kbb.com/audi/rs-6/">Audi RS 6 Avant</a> is closer to $130K.

The plug-in hybrid drivetrain in the 2026 M6 benefits from BMW’s involvement in motor sports, endurance racing in particular. On the combustion side is a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 (a well-known entity in BMW vehicles). An electric motor is integrated into the M-tuned 8-speed automatic transmission. Together, they create a mighty 717 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque, going to a standard M-tuned all-wheel drive system.

<h3>4-Year/50,000-Mile Warranty</h3>
BMW’s new-vehicle and powertrain warranties last four years or 50,000 miles, whichever happens first. This is typical for European luxury car makers. Roadside assistance is included for that period, but with unlimited mileage. Hybrid batteries are covered for eight years or 80,000 miles. Scheduled maintenance is free for three years or 36,000 miles.
<h3>Safety Ratings</h3>
This current generation of 5 Series was named a 2025 Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (<a href="https://www.iihs.org/ratings/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IIHS</a>), the agency’s second-highest accolade. Standard safety equipment includes forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane departure alert, and Active Blind Spot Detection with rear cross-traffic alert.

The battery for this plug-in hybrid car can now charge at a slightly faster rate: 11 kilowatts (kW), up from last year’s 7.4 kW. A couple of new interior color schemes become available for the standard Merino leather upholstery: Dark Violet/Black and Taupe/Deep Lagoon.

The 2026 Audi Q5 is a luxurious, balanced, tasteful option in a field full of excellent choices.

Last year’s updates moved the Q5 lineup to a single powertrain, a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine good for 268 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The same engine provides motivation for all three available trims. Audi says this engine, paired with standard all-wheel drive (AWD) and the standard 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, will accelerate the Q5 from a stop to 60 mph in a brisk 5.8 seconds and onward to a top speed of 130 mph.
If the all-new Q5 adheres to the same dynamic style as the previous model, it should fit somewhere between the BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC in sportiness, with a balanced take on both pace and comfort.
Fuel Economy
The Q5’s 25 mpg combined puts it just a bit behind its key rivals. The BMW X3 xDrive30i, for instance, is rated at 29 mpg combined, the Lexus NX 250 AWD scores 28 mpg combined, and the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 4Matic gets 26 mpg combined.

Handsome Exterior

Like its interior design ethos, Audi’s exterior design emphasizes premium elements through subtle, understated details. Rather than trying to blow minds or break necks, the Q5 is happy simply to capture one’s gaze and hold it.

Dynamic interaction light 
This new dash-spanning LED strip helps communicate additional visual cues to the driver and occupants about the car’s status. For instance, the strip can provide a welcoming light when the vehicle is unlocked, or enhance the output of the Virtual Cockpit display with additional visual aids.
New, larger HUD 
With a 7-inch wide, 3-inch tall virtual display, the new  head-up display (HUD) offers significantly more real estate than the previous model’s HUD. For the first time, the HUD can also now display vehicle, phone call, and infotainment information, too.
Audi assistant 
Audi’s latest in-car digital assistant gets a new on-screen avatar as well as a host of more advanced functions, including weather forecasts, automation of routines, and even proactive suggestions for climate control or seat settings based on contextual information.

Elegant Interior

Audi’s interiors have a reputation for tasteful elegance, and the Q5’s cabin is no exception. Materials, fit, finish, and features are all top-notch.
The Q5’s interior space is competitive, with 40.9 inches of front legroom and 38 inches in the rear. Cargo volume is also good, up somewhat from the previous Q5, at 27.6 cubic feet behind the second row, or 56.9 cubic feet with the rear seats folded flat. The all-new 2026 BMW X3, on the other hand, offers even more space, with 31.9 cubic feet behind the rear seats, or 67.1 cubic feet with the second row folded down — so much space it’s almost a size class up from the Q5

Having just entered an all-new generation midway through the 2025 model year, the 2026 Audi Q5 is expected to carry forward into the new model year with few, if any, changes. That’s not a problem for Audi fans, however, as the all-new Q5 is an attractive, feature-packed compact luxury SUV that looks poised to continue its status as the brand’s best-seller.

The 2025 Audi Q5&#8217;s starting sticker price was $53,495, with the range-topping Q5 TFSI Prestige starting at $61,895. We expect prices to remain roughly the same for the 2026 Q5.

The 2026 Q5’s 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine comes with standard all-wheel drive and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. It’s rated for 268 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque.
4-Year/50,000-Mile Warranty
Audi’s new car warranty lasts four years or 50,000 miles, whichever happens first. Roadside assistance is included. That’s typical among luxury brands. New for 2026, <a href="https://www.kbb.com/car-news/audi-hikes-most-prices-adds-free-maintenance/">Audi is including three years of pre-paid maintenance</a> for new vehicles.

The all-new Q5 hasn’t yet been crash tested, but the outgoing generation of Audi Q5 was named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (<a href="https://www.iihs.org/ratings/">IIHS</a>), its second-highest accolade. The Kia Sorento is one of the best values among midsize 3-row SUVs for its attractive price tag, class-leading warranty, and versatile interior.

Power, Ride, and Handling

The Kia Sorento’s standard 191-horsepower 4-cylinder engine gets the job done, but most buyers go with the more satisfying 281-hp turbocharged unit. Only the LX and S trims use the non-turbo engine. Both mills match an 8-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD).
The enthusiast in us loves the quicker acceleration of the more powerful engine. It also has the practical perk of more towing capacity (up to 4,000 pounds) while returning almost the same fuel economy as the base engine. And while a full load of people and/or cargo can render the base engine a bit underpowered, the turbo remains relatively unphased.
Being on the smaller side of its class, the Sorento is nimbler around town and in parking lots than most 3-row SUVs, which we count among its key advantages. It’s also about as comfortable on the highway as anything in the segment. For buyers who only occasionally load up more than five people and spend a lot of time navigating parking lots, the Sorento can be an easier way to move about the world.
<h3>Fuel Economy</h3>
Front-wheel-drive Kia Sorento models return up to 23 city/31 highway/26 combined mpg. When upgrading to all-wheel drive (AWD), those ratings drop to 23 city/28 highway/25 combined mpg. The available turbo engine is still pretty efficient, getting 23 combined mpg with both front- and all-wheel drive. Also, it doesn’t require premium gas like some turbos, so the fuel costs between the two engines aren’t drastically different.
Check out the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/kia/sorento-hybrid/">Sorento Hybrid</a> for better efficiency, which gets up to 36 mpg combined. According to <a href="https://fueleconomy.gov/feg/make.shtml" target="_blank" rel="noopener">EPA</a> estimates, it results in about $41/month in fuel savings compared to the non-hybrid Sorento. There’s also a <a href="https://www.kbb.com/kia/sorento-plug-in-hybrid/">Sorento Plug-in Hybrid</a> that goes 31 miles on electricity alone and gets 33 combined mpg with a depleted battery.

Modern Exterior

The Kia Sorento’s exterior styling was refreshed in 2024, striking a nice balance of rugged and modern. Its ruggedness increases with the X-Line models, adding an extra inch of ride height, roof rails, and an off-road appearance package with skid plates.

Second-row captain’s chairs 
Every Sorento with a turbocharged engine comes with second-row captain’s chairs. These not only make the second row more comfortable but also make the third row easier to access.
Exciting turbo engine 
The available turbocharged engine is the more popular choice for good reasons. It dramatically improves the performance of the Sorento with only a minor fuel economy penalty.
X-Line package 
The X-Line models in the Sorento lineup add a rugged appearance package with an extra inch of ground clearance, high-utility roof rails, and unique wheels and bumpers. They all come standard with torque-vectoring all-wheel drive for added capability.
User-friendly infotainment system 
Every Kia Sorento has a user-friendly and feature-rich infotainment system. Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard, and a few available upgrades include navigation, a Bose audio system, and a wireless charging pad.
Smart Power Tailgate 
The EX trim and up have a handy Smart Power Tailgate, allowing hands-free opening and closing. This function adds a lot of convenience to loading and unloading the cargo area.

Versatile Interior

The Kia Sorento’s strong value proposition doesn’t just apply to the lower trims. This SUV gets very nice in the upper trims, with features like quilted leather seats, open-pore wood trim, and a bright satin finish that we’re impressed to find in an SUV for under $50,000.
Standard infotainment features include a 12.3-inch touchscreen and wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay. The SX and SX Prestige trims take the tech up a notch with a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. We think Kia does a great job implementing much screen real estate without overwhelming the space.
Seating for seven is standard in the Sorento. Turbocharged models get second-row captain’s chairs, which drops the total seating capacity to six. We consider it a worthwhile trade-off for most buyers since captain’s chairs make the second row more comfortable and the third row more accessible.
Interior space is generous in the first two rows, with plenty of legroom and headroom. However, we didn’t have much room when we climbed into the third row; these seats are best reserved for children. The Sorento has 29.6 inches of third-row legroom, while the bigger Kia Telluride has 31.4 inches. That extra 1.8 inches goes a long way.
Cargo space is tight when all three rows are in place. As in all SUVs, folding down seats yields more cargo space. With the third row folded down, you get generous cargo room with 38.5 cubic feet of space. Behind the third row is a small 12.6-cubic-foot cargo hold (versus 21 cubic feet in the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/kia/telluride/">Telluride</a>).

The Kia Sorento presents an appealing proposition for families who can benefit from a third row of seats, but don’t need the extra seating every day. Many midsize SUVs are roomier inside, but they’re also more expensive and less efficient. The Sorento is in a sweet spot, being bigger than a compact SUV, but more affordable than a larger <a href="https://www.kbb.com/suv/best-3-row-suvs/">3-row SUV</a>. In addition to being just-right-sized for many families, it has a comfortable, high-tech interior, good fuel economy, and class-leading warranty coverage.

The 2026 Kia Sorento starts at $33,635 for the base LX trim with front-wheel drive (FWD). The top X-Pro SX Prestige model begins at $49,035. All-wheel drive (AWD) costs an extra $2,000 on the S trim and $1,500 on the EX trim, but it comes standard on all X-Line and X-Pro models.

The Sorento is available with two 4-cylinder engines, both of which have 2.5-liter displacement. The more popular of the two engines is turbocharged, which significantly improves performance and max towing capacity. With both engines, front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is optional.
Although both engines use an 8-speed automatic transmission, they’re not identical; the turbo engine’s gearbox is a dual-clutch. The Sorento is also available with hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains, which we review separately.

Kia’s warranty coverage is as good as it gets. The Sorento is backed by a 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty and a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. That’s industry-leading warranty coverage, but it’s tied with its two top competitors: the Hyundai Santa Fe and Mitsubishi Outlander.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (<a href="https://www.iihs.org/ratings/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IIHS</a>) has awarded the Kia Sorento the Top Safety Pick designation in 2024; however, changes in testing protocols disqualified it for 2025 and 2026. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (<a href="https://www.nhtsa.gov/ratings" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NHTSA</a>) gave it a perfect 5-Star overall rating. Moreover, it provides a generous host of advanced standard safety features like automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring.

As the top dog and most expensive variant in Kia’s broad lineup of Sportage models, the plug-in hybrid model has the most power and the most flexibility. For 2026, it brings 268 hp to the table, which is seven more than last year and 36 more than the non-plug-in Kia Sportage Hybrid. We’ve found this potency serves well for both getting up freeway on-ramps quickly and when passing at higher speeds. It’s also assuring to have all-wheel drive standard — power going to all four wheels provides better grip than just two.
But the real x-factor of a plug-in hybrid is its ability to drive on battery power alone, akin to an all-electric vehicle. For the Sportage PHEV, that means up to 34 miles of electric-only range. After that, the onboard turbocharged engine kicks in, enabling you to drive this Kia plug-in hybrid just as you would any other combustion vehicle.
In our miles and miles of testing, we’ve found the Kia Sportage Plug-in Hybrid’s chassis comfortable yet controlled, smooth, and settled. We also appreciate that, unlike many gas-electric vehicles that use a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that can drone, here you get a 6-speed automatic transmission. There are even steering wheel-mounted paddles that grant full control of shifts when in Sport mode. For 2026, when the Kia Sportage Plug-in Hybrid is in Eco or Smart mode, those paddles adjust the level of brake regeneration — even with the ability to bring the vehicle to a stop when the left one is held. We like this feature on Kia’s all-electric vehicles, and applaud its inclusion here.
One other little detail that registers with us: The audio system reduces volume automatically when the reverse gear is selected, so the driver’s concentration isn’t affected. It’s the little touches like this that make living with a car more enjoyable over the years.
Fuel Economy
Factoring in the 34 miles traveled using just the battery, the Sportage Plug-In Hybrid is capable of 84 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) in combined city/highway driving. When operating as a regular hybrid, it achieves 35 mpg combined; all-wheel-drive versions of the Sportage Hybrid (not plug-in) run to 38 mpg combined. Total range for the Kia Sportage Plug-in Hybrid is 430 miles, according to the EPA. An all-wheel-drive Kia Sportage Hybrid (non-plug-in) is good for up to 521.
The all-new 2026 Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid promises up to 50 miles of all-electric range and a powertrain that makes up to 320 hp.

It seems we’re in a golden age of compact SUV design. All that designed-by-committee stuff seems behind us, now that we have striking lookers like the current Kia Sportage lineup. In our imagination, that little euphoric buzz whenever we walk up to the Sportage Plug-in Hybrid and press the fob’s Unlock button would always be there.
Some of the most visually striking elements of the Sportage Plug-in Hybrid are the boomerang-like lights around the headlight housing, the sloping roof that meets a pinched C-pillar, and the wide taillight treatments. To our eyes, it’s all a cohesive and stylish package.
