All-wheel drive (AWD) and hybrid powertrains are increasingly popular options in this class, but the Jetta is still front-wheel-drive-only with no hybrid option.
Thanks to ample torque at low rpm, the Jetta is noticeably quicker than most contemporaries, capable of dashing to 60 mph in about seven seconds. Once in motion, you’ll find the Jetta’s European roots make it one of the most enjoyable compacts in the class, bolstered by taut steering, adept cornering, and strong brakes. As a driver’s car, the Jetta checks all the right boxes, delivering a firm yet comfortable ride around town or the occasional trip further afield.

A distinctly European flavor distinguishes the Volkswagen Jetta from the competition. Its driver-focused cabin has supportive front seats, an 8-inch display angled toward the driver, and ergonomically friendly controls. However, we could do with more physical buttons, knobs, and switches rather than the sometimes-frustrating haptic controls for the HVAC. At least it has a volume knob, which not all VW models do.
Interior space is generous for a compact car. Rear passengers won’t complain; they have 37.4 inches of legroom, which is on the better side of this class. As for cargo space, the Jetta&#8217;s 14.1-cubic-foot trunk is on par with the segment.

Although these numbers are about average for an affordable compact, the Jetta is pretty torquey low in the rev range, making it more fun to drive than its modest specs imply.
<h3>4-Year/50,000-Mile Warranty</h3>
Volkswagen’s basic and powertrain warranties last four years or 50,000 miles. That’s better than the typical 3-year/36,000-mile new-vehicle warranty but not as good as the more common 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain coverage. VW includes roadside assistance for three years or 36,000 miles, plus free scheduled maintenance for the first two years or 20,000 miles.
<h3>Safety</h3>
In crash testing conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (<a href="https://www.nhtsa.gov/ratings" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NHTSA</a>), the Jetta scored a maximum 5-Star overall rating. The NX is calm and composed, a welcome refuge from traffic chaos. If we were looking for a luxury compact SUV for long trips and stress-free commutes, the NX would be on our shortlist. We’d still like a bit more sound insulation, though.
The NX 350 and NX 350h are the most popular grade choices. The hybrid (NX 350h) makes 240 horsepower, while the NX 350 delivers 275 hp. For reference, the Genesis GV70 2.5T has 300 hp. The NX 350 hits 60 mph in 6.6 seconds, while the NX 350h takes 7.2. Neither is thrilling, but both feel quick enough in real-world driving.
The NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid is the powerhouse of the lineup, with 302 hp and the ability to cover most daily errands on electricity alone. If you live in hilly terrain, you’ll appreciate the extra muscle, and you won’t miss the discontinued NX 250’s modest 203 hp. The NX 450h+ does the zero-to-60-mph dash in 6.0 seconds, according to Lexus.
Fuel Economy
The NX 350 returns a manufacturer-estimated 24 mpg combined, solid for the class. The NX 350h hybrid impresses with a combined fuel economy of 40 mpg. The NX 450h+ PHEV offers 37 miles of electric-only range and 36 mpg combined once the battery depletes. Keep it charged overnight or at work, and you’ll run on electricity most of the time.

Bold Exterior

This generation of NX has been around since 2022, and its bold grille remains a Lexus signature. Love it or hate it, you’ve seen it before. Overall, Lexus plays it safe here in terms of incremental updates, but the NX still looks sharp.

Infotainment system 
Easy to use, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Wi-Fi, Amazon Music, and a natural-voice digital assistant. A 9.8-inch touchscreen is standard; a 14-inch upgrade is available.
Heated front seats 
Standard across the NX lineup, these are a very welcome feature on cold mornings.
All-wheel drive  
Providing added confidence in slippery conditions, all-wheel drive (AWD) is standard on all models except the NX 350h FWD. The newly available front-drive model expands affordability while preserving options for the rest of the lineup.
Advanced Park 
This optional feature makes light work of parallel and perpendicular parking.
Mark Levinson audio 
This optional 17-speaker, 1,800-watt system turns the NX into a rolling concert hall.
Digital rearview mirror 
Another optional feature we think is worth it for the clear, wide-angle view behind, free of obstructions.

Quality Interior

Inside, the NX sticks to what Lexus is best known for: quality materials, solid assembly, and plenty of standard features. The SUV format brings a higher driving position, and the front seats are especially comfortable. Storage is generous, and while rear legroom (36.1 inches) isn’t class-leading, it’s adequate. The Genesis GV70 offers about an inch more.
Cargo space is 22.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 46.9 cubic feet with them folded — and that’s true even for the NX 450h+ PHEV. Some rivals, like the GV70, offer more room, but the NX makes good use of its space.

The NX is a smart pick in a segment full of flashier options. It’s relatively affordable to own, treats its passengers well without going over the top, and carries the Lexus reputation for dependability. Add in a dealer network known for making ownership painless, and the NX makes a compelling case.

The previous base model, the NX 250, is gone for 2026, leaving the NX 350 as the entry point. The NX 350 packs a 2.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 275 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic. It’s the sweet spot for most buyers, delivering solid punch without punishing fuel economy.
The NX 350h hybrid combines a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder with electric motors that net 240 hp and stellar efficiency. Lexus says it gets up to 40 mpg combined in front-wheel-drive form. All-wheel drive is available for those who face slippery conditions, and the hybrid’s smooth, quiet character makes it a natural fit for city and suburban life.
At the top of the NX lineup, the NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid brings 302 hp and an EPA-estimated 37 miles of electric-only range. Keep it charged, and you’ll cover most daily driving without burning a drop of gas. Not every rival offers a hybrid, and even fewer have a PHEV option.
<h3>4-Year/50,000-Mile Warranty</h3>
Lexus backs the NX with a 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty and a 6-year/70,000-mile powertrain warranty. Hybrid components and batteries are covered for eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. The first scheduled service is complimentary, valid for up to one year or 10,000 miles.
<h3>Safety</h3>
The Lexus NX earned top marks for safety, including an <a href="https://www.iihs.org/ratings" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IIHS</a> Top Safety Pick rating, for the 2025 model year. While 2026 crash test results haven’t been released, we expect similar results. Every NX comes with a robust suite of standard driver-assist features: forward collision warning with pedestrian detection and intersection assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure alert with steering assist, and lane-tracing assist to help keep you centered.

The NX lineup drops the NX 250, making the NX 350 the new entry point. The NX 350h hybrid also now offers a front-wheel-drive (FWD) option, getting an estimated 40 mpg combined. A new Premium trim joins the NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid range, lowering the cost of entry for plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) buyers. The F SPORT Handling package is now available across all powertrains, and new colors, such as Infrared and expanded Ultra White, add more visual flair. The Nissan Sentra compact sedan enters an all-new generation for the 2026 model year. Although there are no changes under the hood, an aesthetic makeover, updated technology, and the return of the premium SL trim are enough to make the humble Sentra feel truly new. A few highlights of the redesign include a Google built-in infotainment system with a 12.3-inch display, the Nissan ProPilot Assist system, and some upscale options like quilted seating, a head-up display, and a wireless charging pad.

Every 2026 Nissan Sentra is powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine rated at 149 horsepower and 146 lb-ft of torque. The output is sent to the front wheels through a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).

The spunky, wonderfully appointed 2026 Mazda CX-30 brings sports car-like performance to the subcompact SUV class.

The CX-30’s standard 2.5-liter engine is the most powerful base unit in the subcompact SUV class, generating 186 hp and enabling a standstill-to-60 mph dash in a relatively quick eight seconds. This is the more popular engine in the CX-30 lineup and the sensible choice for most buyers.
We’re convinced Mazda had Tennessee’s twisting Tail of the Dragon stretch of road in mind when it engineered this spirited little SUV. The same flow, feel, fun, and fleetness found in other Mazda vehicles are all here in the CX-30. We believe anything better than this probably has a BMW badge and a price to match. The steering is wonderfully responsive, and the suspension tuning is pitch-perfect. Granted, the suspension may feel somewhat stiff to more comfort-oriented drivers, but that’s a trade-off we would make for such handling dynamics.
The other engine on offer is a 250-hp turbocharged 4-cylinder unit. This intensifies the CX-30’s already enjoyable driving dynamics while hitting 60 mph in about six seconds. We think the base engine is quick enough, plus it&#8217;s more affordable and more efficient — but it’s good to have the choice.
Fuel Economy
We argue that the fuel economy of the CX-30’s base engine is perfectly acceptable, achieving 29 mpg in combined city/highway driving. That’s matched by the Kia Seltos (with all-wheel drive). They both outdo the all-wheel-drive Honda HR-V. The CX-30’s turbocharged engine manages a still-respectable 25 mpg combined.

Sporty Wrapper

We like that the CX-30 follows the same exterior design approach as the rest of the company’s SUVs. That’s fine by us. When a core design works this well, why change the classy lines, sleek surfaces, and elegant proportions?
Mazda did freshen the CX-30’s nose and added the new Aire Editions with blacked-out accents and wheels for 2026.

Ergonomics 
This relates to how all the controls connect with the driver, along with seats designed to optimize correct posture and combat fatigue. Mazda clearly put some of its finest minds to work in this area. There are details like the location of navigation information or an amber light indicating when the wipers are in their Auto setting. Yet they all merge into a general feeling of things being just right.
Driving dynamics 
In our opinion, this is the CX-30’s superpower, what makes it different from the humdrum competition. It’s responsive and enjoyable, especially when the turbo engine is in residence. The fun is accessible, yet the CX-30 remains a sensible SUV.
All-wheel drive 
Every CX-30 has all-wheel drive as standard. This transparent system can move power from axle to axle and wheel to wheel, optimizing traction. We find it reassuring and confidence-inspiring.
Driver aids 
Every CX-30 comes with a set of advanced safety and driver assistance technologies, such as automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, high-beam assist, and lane-keeping assistance.
Rain-sensing wipers 
Standard across the board, this system senses moisture on the windshield and automatically engages the wipers. The wiper speed adjusts in relation to the volume of rain.
Proximity Keyless Entry 
One of our must-have features is available in the Select Sport trim and above. It allows the doors to unlock automatically if the key fob is on your person. Push-button start is standard on all trim levels. We argue that once you’ve experienced this feature, you won’t want to be without it.

Upscale Cabin

The CX-30 provides <a href="https://www.kbb.com/comparison/lets-take-a-look-inside-the-mazda-cx-30/">one of the more high-end cabins</a> in its class. Our owner reviews praise the CX-30 for its quiet and comfortable cabin. Many mainstream manufacturers are upping their interior design game, making their cabins look good enough for a premium marque. Mazda has long been ahead of this particular curve.
High-quality materials are arranged expertly into a simple yet pleasing layout, topped off with a decent-sized 8.8-inch infotainment display — 10.25-inch touchscreen in upper trims. The top Premium Plus trim’s interior quality rivals some luxury SUVs.
The CX-30 is a subcompact SUV, so space is not exactly plentiful. But adults will enjoy more than sufficient room up front, and 36.3 inches of rear legroom is about average, although the Kia Seltos and Honda HR-V have more. The 2026 Mazda CX-30 continues to dominate its class in performance and driving dynamics. If how you get to a destination outweighs your need to take a lot of stuff with you, the CX-30 is the ticket. Retaining its quickness and legendary athleticism for 2026, it still punches up with a thoughtfully styled, meticulously constructed, and beautifully finished interior. The base (and most popular) engine of the CX-30 lineup is a naturally aspirated (not turbocharged) 2.5-liter 4-cylinder unit developing 186 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque. This goes to all four wheels through a 6-speed automatic transmission.
The higher-performance alternative adds a turbocharger to create 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque with premium gasoline. Save a few pennies per gallon at the pump using regular fuel, and those numbers dip to 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque — still a healthy amount of muscle for a subcompact SUV.
3-Year/36,000-Mile Warranty
Mazda’s new-vehicle warranty lasts three years or 36,000 miles, whichever happens first. Powertrains are covered for five years or 60,000 miles. This is all typical for mainstream manufacturers.
Safety Ratings
The CX-30 has received the highest accolade of Top Safety Pick+ from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (<a href="https://www.iihs.org/ratings/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IIHS</a>), while the 2025 model achieved the maximum 5-Star overall score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (<a href="https://www.nhtsa.gov/ratings" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NHTSA</a>). Standard safety features include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control.

What's new for 2026

The biggest news is the addition of two Aire Editions: one each for the non-turbo and turbo lineups. Aire is a cosmetic appearance package, adding black wheels, badging, nameplate, roof rails, and outboard mirrors on the exterior. Inside are lighter colors and white faux-leather seats with gray cloth inserts for the non-turbo Aire, and gray faux-suede inserts for the Aire Turbo. While adding the Aire trims, <a href="https://www.kbb.com/mazda/">Mazda</a> deleted the 2.5 Carbon Turbo grade.
All CX-30 models get a new brake Limited Slip Differential that is said to improve traction and stability. Beginning with the Preferred grade, a 10.5-inch touchscreen replaces the standard 8.8-inch display in the S and S Select Sport. The 2026 Volkswagen Taos is a roomy, fun-to-drive subcompact SUV with plenty of crowd-pleasing tech.

Our time behind the wheel of almost every Taos we’ve driven has been enjoyable. That includes the current one with its lively turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. Every Taos model gets a traditional 8-speed automatic transmission with smooth shifting that maximizes power delivery.
Generally, Volkswagen cars have a knack for feeling a cut above the fray thanks to taut manners and an eagerness that runs beneath the surface. It’s a German thing, extending even to the automaker’s smallest SUV.
During our 160-mile jaunt around the Texas Hill Country in a Taos SEL 4Motion — love the dark blue leather interior, by the way — we were impressed not only with the performance of the power boost in collaboration with the 8-speed transmission but also with the cabin&#8217;s quiet. This is no easy feat when rolling over the pebble-like pavement of many of the Hill Country roads.
Well-balanced and composed, the Taos performs with nearly silent efficiency. Even at speed, the Taos had plenty of grunt in reserve for quick sprints around slower vehicles.
Fuel economy
The Taos earns 31 mpg in mixed city/highway driving with front-wheel drive and 28 mpg combined with all-wheel drive. These figures are above average for the class, at least for front-wheel-drive models. If fuel economy ranks high on your priorities, you might want to check out the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/toyota/corolla-cross-hybrid/2025/">Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid</a>, which comes standard with all-wheel drive and earns 42 mpg combined.

Stylish Wrapper

The Taos has long looked like the proper youngest sibling in the VW SUV family, and that’s fine by us. We like the squared-off, slightly blocky design. In addition to lending boldness on the outside, it’s what helps create all that versatile space within. The S gets 17-inch alloy wheels, while all the SE versions sport 18-inch ones. The SEL wins the wheel contest with 19-inchers.

IQ.Drive 
This is the name for VW’s suite of active safety and driver assistance features, and it’s standard for all Taos trim levels. It bundles adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and active blind-spot monitoring.
Cargo capacity 
Most people don’t buy a subcompact SUV if copious cargo room is a priority, but we appreciate it when it’s there. In this respect, the Taos is among the best in its class, with up to 65.9 cubic feet with the rear seat folded.
Digital Cockpit 
Such all-digital instrument clusters debuted in luxury vehicles from Audi, VW’s corporate cousin, and it’s now standard in a Taos.
Carefree Maintenance Program 
All new 2026 Taos models come with two years or 20,000 miles of complimentary maintenance.
4Motion 
This is the name for VW’s all-wheel-drive system. While most rivals also offer all-wheel drive, not all have four user-adjustable drive modes, including off-road and off-road custom.
Wireless phone charging 
A helpful feature if there ever was one, this is standard in SE and SEL models. Place a compatible phone on the pad, and it begins charging. Even better, Volkswagen is hastening the charging time for 2026.

Tidy Interior Design

The 2026 VW Taos provides a standard 8-inch touchscreen. SE and SEL models get touch-based climate controls (for better or worse). Base Taos S models have two-tone black and gray cloth upholstery, SE models get VW&#8217;s CloudTex synthetic leather, and top-line SEL trims get genuine leather upholstery available in either a black/gray combo or a handsome dark blue color.
Though unseen, acoustic dampening excels at reducing the intrusion of outside noise into the cabin. Furthermore, its front seats are wonderfully well bolstered, offering a solid blend of comfort and support.
We applaud this VW for its 2-row/5-passenger cabin that feels more spacious than its exterior dimensions would suggest. This is especially notable in the cargo area, which boasts up to 65.9 cubic feet with the rear seats folded in front-drive versions (or 60.2 for those with all-wheel drive). Those figures are right up there with the Hyundai Kona (63.7) and Kia Seltos (62.8).

The 2026 Volkswagen Taos boasts more interior space than expected. This is important because the main reason to buy an SUV is people space/cargo room. In fact, better-than-average space for its segment is a common theme among Volkswagen SUVs like the Tiguan and Atlas. It holds true for the Taos, as well. Moreover, we find the Taos a blast to drive thanks to its German handling dynamics and spirited turbocharged engine.

The Ford Expedition MAX delivers modern tech and truck-like capability while being big enough for everyone and their stuff.

Although the Ford Expedition MAX entered a new generation last year, it carried over the turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine that powered the previous generation. However, the new standard tuning makes 400 horsepower, and it’s upgradeable to 440 horsepower. A 10-speed automatic transmission sends output to the rear or all four wheels.
The 2026 Ford Expedition MAX provides plentiful power, even with a full load of passengers and a boat in tow. The base 400-horsepower engine is more than adequate for daily driving duties, but the enthusiast in us loves the extra 40 horsepower in the high-output tuning that’s optional in the Platinum trim. That extra boost in power makes a big difference when sprinting on an on-ramp or passing on the highway.
The Expedition MAX’s handling is a little sharper than we expect for such a big SUV when equipped with the optional sport suspension system that comes with the Stealth Performance package. With the standard suspension, this drives like the big truck that it is, which is typical for this class. Taking a sharp turn too fast can result in some predictable body roll. However, this is a truck made for devouring miles on the highway, and it’s perfectly engineered for that task, especially when equipped with the BlueCruise hands-free highway driving system. Smooth, comfortable, and powerful, the Expedition MAX drives exactly like a full-size SUV should.
We wish we could tell you how an Expedition MAX Tremor performs off-road, but that SUV doesn’t exist. The rugged Tremor trim is limited to the standard, non-MAX version of the Expedition. Meanwhile, the Ford’s long-wheelbase GM rivals do have dedicated off-road trims: the Chevy Suburban Z71 and GMC Yukon XL AT4.
<h3>Fuel Economy</h3>
There’s no EPA rating specifically for the Expedition MAX, but the regular Expedition gets 16 city/24 highway/19 combined mpg with rear-wheel drive (RWD) and 15 city/22 highway/18 combined mpg with 4-wheel drive (4WD).
These fuel economy ratings are about average for this class, but the diesel versions of the Chevy Suburban and GMC Yukon XL are more efficient. The Jeep Wagoneer L, also powered by a turbo 6-cylinder engine, is about as efficient as the Expedition MAX. The fact that this Ford runs on regular-grade gas helps keep the fuel costs manageable; the optional 6.2-liter V8 in its GM rivals requires premium.

Plus-Size Exterior

The exterior design of the Ford Expedition MAX strikes a nice balance of modern and traditional. It’s satisfyingly boxy, but a handsome light signature and stylish wheels make it look modern. The look changes quite a bit throughout the lineup; the Active is humble yet stylish, the Platinum looks fancy, and the King Ranch is like a cowboy wearing his Sunday best.
The Ford Split Gate is a unique exterior feature of the Ford Expedition MAX. This class-exclusive split liftgate has a clamshell design, with the bottom part folding down like a truck’s tailgate. That means you can open the hatch from the driver’s seat and not worry about a bottle of wine rolling out and shattering on the ground. A Cargo Tailgate Manager option integrates a serving table and a backrest for the split gate, making the Expedition MAX the ultimate tailgating SUV.

Ford Split Gate 
The Ford Split Gate makes the Expedition MAX the only full-size SUV in its class with a split tailgate. We love the convenience and versatility it brings to this family SUV.
Towing muscle 
The Ford Expedition MAX is among the best in its class when it comes to towing. With a max tow rating of up to 9,300 pounds, it’s ready and willing to pull boats, campers, and a wide range of other toys.
BlueCruise 
BlueCruise is Ford’s hands-free highway driving system, and it’s one of our favorites. It allows for safe and relaxed hands-off-the-wheel, eyes-on-the-road driving on over 130,000 miles of North American highways. It’s standard on the King Ranch and optional on all other trims.
Ford Digital Experience 
The Ford Digital Experience consists of a 24-inch panoramic display working in concert with a 13.2-inch central infotainment display. Wireless smartphone connectivity, crisp graphics, and a user-friendly interface make for a pleasant experience.
360-degree zone lighting 
A nice touch of the Ford Expedition MAX is optional zone lighting all around the exterior of the SUV. It can project light in any direction, which is helpful for setting up a campsite or just lighting the way in a dark parking lot.
Luxury trims 
The Western-inspired King Ranch trim and the fancy Platinum Ultimate package turn the Expedition MAX into a luxury SUV with features like BlueCruise, nicer leather seats, a High-Output engine, and a B&amp;O premium audio system with up to 22 speakers.

Huge Interior

Historically, some full-size SUVs have had interior dimensions that don’t feel so full-size, especially in the third row. However, clever packaging in the Ford Expedition MAX yields a truly massive interior. There’s also plenty of cargo space to boot, and the second- and third-row seats all fold flat, creating an enormous cargo hold with a flat floor. Notably, the legroom in the second or third row doesn’t change when you spring for the Expedition MAX. However, the longer Expedition serves up 36.1 cubic feet of cargo room behind the third row. That’s a 67% increase over the standard wheelbase, but less cargo space than the Suburban and Wagoneer L.
We can confirm that each of the many seats in the Ford Expedition MAX is adult-friendly. Tilt-and-slide second-row seats make the third row easy to access, and there’s plenty of room back there with amenities like cupholders and USB-C ports. Even the middle third-row seat has decent width for when you need to use every seat. With a generous 36.5 inches of third-row legroom, the Expedition MAX’s third-row space is almost identical to the Chevy Suburban, GMC Yukon XL, and Jeep Wagoneer L.
Interior materials get nicer as you work your way into pricier trims. All but the base Active trim have leather seats, and the King Ranch model boasts what Ford calls Mesa Del Rio leather with Kingsville stitching. A fully loaded Expedition MAX feels like a luxury SUV inside, but it’s also priced like one.
The Expedition MAX has a unique screen arrangement. A large 24-inch display is perched on the dash in front of the driver, serving as a digital gauge cluster and a Google Maps screen with a small section that’s customizable. But that’s not meant to be tapped with your fingers; a more traditional 13.2-inch infotainment display is on the center stack for controlling your maps, music, and other functions. Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard. We love what Ford calls the Ford Digital Experience; it’s an excellent execution of multiple big screens that are clear and easy to use. The oval-shaped steering wheel helps to keep it all easy to read.
Speaking of the steering wheel, it comes with a bit of a learning curve. It has two square pads where your thumbs go with haptic controls that can change based on what you’re trying to do. As you swipe your thumbs on these pads, their functions show up on the screen in front of you so you can manipulate your cruise control and audio. We found this system pretty intuitive, and we like the uncluttered look of the steering wheel, but we know some drivers might prefer a more traditional steering wheel button layout. Also of note, the HVAC and seat climate controls are all on the screen, forgoing physical knobs and switches.

There are some traits that are shared by all full-size SUVs, like a big 3-row interior, a strong engine, and truck-like capability. But some competitors execute this formula better than others. The Ford Expedition MAX is our <a href="https://www.kbb.com/awards/best-buy-awards-2025-ford-expedition-full-size-suv/">Kelley Blue Book Best Buy Award winner</a> in its class because it checks the boxes we expect from a big SUV in this segment and delivers more than we expect. Its Ford Digital Experience is one of the smoothest executions we’ve seen of integrating multiple screens in the dash, and its available BlueCruise hands-free highway driving system is one of our favorites. Although the Ford Expedition entered a new generation last year, it carried over the turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine that powered the previous generation. However, the new standard tuning makes 400 horsepower, and it’s upgradeable to 440 horsepower. A 10-speed automatic transmission sends output to the rear or all four wheels.
The 2026 Ford Expedition provides plentiful power, even with a full load of passengers and a boat in tow. The base 400-hp engine is more than adequate for daily driving duties, but the enthusiast in us loves the extra 40 horsepower in the high-output tuning that’s standard in the Tremor model and optional in the Platinum trim. That extra boost in power makes a big difference when sprinting on an on-ramp or passing on the highway.
The Expedition’s handling is a little sharper than we expect for such a big SUV when equipped with the optional sport suspension system that comes with the Stealth Performance package. With the standard suspension, this drives like the big truck that it is, which is typical for this class. Taking a sharp turn too fast can result in some predictable body roll. However, this is an SUV made for devouring miles on the highway, and it’s perfectly engineered for that task, especially when equipped with the BlueCruise hands-free highway driving system. Smooth, comfortable, and powerful, the Expedition drives exactly like a full-size SUV should.

Its beefier tires, extra ground clearance, and electronic locking rear differential made traversing muddy trails in its off-road drive mode effortless. It’s safe to say the Expedition Tremor can handle just about any terrain that the average Ford Expedition owner will encounter, and it will look great doing it.

The Ford Expedition is rated at 16 city/24 highway/19 combined mpg with rear-wheel drive (RWD). With 4-wheel drive (4WD), it gets 15 city/22 highway/18 combined mpg.
These fuel economy ratings are about average for this class, but the hybrid Toyota Sequoia and the diesel versions of the Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon are more efficient. The Jeep Wagoneer, also powered by a turbo 6-cylinder engine, is about as efficient as the Expedition. The fact that the Expedition runs on regular-grade gas helps keep the fuel costs manageable; the turbo V6 in the Nissan Armada and the optional 6.2-liter V8 in the Tahoe and Yukon require premium.

Handsome Exterior

The exterior design of the Ford Expedition strikes a nice balance of modern and traditional. It’s satisfyingly boxy, but a handsome light signature and stylish wheels make it look modern. The look changes quite a bit throughout the lineup. The Tremor looks rugged, the Platinum looks fancy, and the King Ranch is like a cowboy wearing his Sunday best.
The Ford Split Gate is a unique exterior feature of the Expedition. This class-exclusive split liftgate has a clamshell design, with the bottom part folding down like a truck’s tailgate. That means you can open the hatch from the driver’s seat and not worry about a bottle of wine rolling out and shattering on the garage floor.
