Driving Impressions

Since it has hybrid in its name, you would expect the CR-V Hybrid to be more efficient than its gas-only sibling (and it is), but the icing on this electrified cake is that it’s more powerful, too. Thanks to the pairing of both gasoline and electrons, the 2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid makes 204 hp, versus the 190 hp in gas-only models. That’s less than the 226 hp of the forthcoming 2026 Toyota RAV4, the 231 hp of the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid, 227 hp of the Kia Sportage Hybrid, and 219 hp of the Mazda CX-50 Hybrid. But with numbers this close, it feels like quibbling.
The takeaway is that the Honda CR-V Hybrid feels confident in every situation and, numbers aside, many of our editors simply prefer the way the CR-V drives and handles. In our testing, which has involved hundreds — well, probably thousands — of miles, we’ve found it a satisfying and easygoing partner, whether running errands around town or trekking for hours on end on the highway.
In the latter situation, we especially appreciate Honda’s easy-to-set and easy-to-use adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assist. The system is part of the Honda Sensing suite, and works smoothly and easily. We also appreciate the CR-V’s excellent visibility and comfortable seats.
Fuel Economy
The CR-V Hybrid is among the most fuel-efficient compact SUVs on the market. With front-wheel drive, it delivers 40 mpg in combined city/highway driving or 37 mpg with all-wheel drive. Still, the Kia Sportage Hybrid edges those numbers with 43 mpg combined with front-wheel drive and 38 mpg with all-wheel drive. The Hyundai Tucson Hybrid and Mazda CX-50 Hybrid, which have all-wheel drive standard, both hit 38 mpg combined.
Hybrid Fuel Savings
At 15,000 miles a year, a front-wheel-drive CR-V Hybrid will use 10 fewer gallons a month than its gasoline-only counterpart. Even at $3 per gallon, that’s a savings of $30 every month. Looking at a full 5-year buy/drive/sell ownership cycle, those savings would more than make up for the hybrid’s relatively nominal price premium. The hybrid also requires about 10 fewer trips to the gas station each year.

Confident Exterior

There’s a maturity to the exterior design of this latest generation of CR-V. As there should be, considering this is the sixth iteration of it. But where previous models tried to be the most anonymous thing in the parking lot, there’s now greater presence, in a tasteful way. Some of the subtler touches include a wide and upright windshield, contributing to excellent outward vision.
The most visually interesting trim in the CR-V Hybrid is the new TrailSport. Meant to evoke a more rugged image, the new CR-V Hybrid TrailSport has a unique front fascia and what Honda calls a &#8220;skid garnish&#8221; (if not a traditional plate); all-terrain tires; blacked out spoiler, door handles, and other bits; and orange TrailSport badges on the front and back. We especially like the Ash Green exterior color exclusive to this model.

It’s the reason you buy a hybrid. The fact that you can get 40 mpg combined in such a modern, technically advanced SUV as the CR-V still brings a smile to our face — especially as we drive past all those gas stations.

Spacious, Smart Interior

The CR-V treats the driver and front passenger to what Honda calls &#8220;body-stabilizing seats,&#8221; designed to promote ideal posture and reduce fatigue. We’ve found that they indeed feel comfortable, supportive, and fine for long stints. The rear seats treat occupants to 41 inches of legroom — downright expansive for a compact SUV.
We’re happy to see a bigger touchscreen standard as part of the CR-V Hybrid’s update for the 2026 model year. The 9-inch touchscreen keeps the CR-V competitive, but still can’t match the standard 12.3-inch displays of the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage, or the available 12.9-inch in the 2026 RAV4. The CR-V Hybrid also has a 7-inch digital instrument cluster on Sport trims, while the TrailSport, Sport-L, and Sport Touring models get a new 10.2-inch unit.
Behind the rear seats of the CR-V Hybrid, there is an impressive 36.3 cubic feet of cargo space. With the rear seats folded down, the maximum volume is 76.5 cubic feet; that&#8217;s as good as this compact SUV class gets, and even more, considering this is a hybrid with a battery pack to hide.

The 2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid employs a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine and an electric motor working together to create a total of 204 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque. This energy goes through an automatic transmission to the road via front-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive (optional in Sport and Sport-L versions, standard in the TrailSport and Sport Touring models).
3-Year/36,000-Mile Warranty
The CR-V Hybrid has a basic new-vehicle warranty of three years or 36,000 miles, whichever happens first. This guarantee is typical for mainstream companies like Honda, although Hyundai and Kia offer longer terms. The powertrain is covered for five years or 60,000 miles, while the hybrid battery has a warranty of eight years or 100,000 miles. Honda also includes complimentary maintenance for the first two years or 24,000 miles.
Safety Ratings

Remember how we compared the Honda CR-V to a golden retriever? That carries over to its driving experience. To break down the furry analogy, we mean that the Honda CR-V simply pleases no matter the situation. Yes, there are other SUVs that are faster, more engaging, and more off-road-worthy. But few — perhaps none, even — just do the everyday stuff as well, as easily, and as courteously as the CR-V.
We’ve found the CR-V’s powertrain is responsive, its steering and braking inputs natural, and its overall driving manners are comfortable and easygoing. Visibility is good, power is adequate, and even its continuously variable automatic transmission is near the top in not feeling like the droning CVTs of yore.
Fuel Economy
A 2026 Honda CR-V with front-wheel drive achieves 30 mpg in combined city/highway driving. Opting for all-wheel drive hardly makes a dent, costing just one mpg for 29 combined. For those seeking even higher fuel efficiency, the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/honda/cr-v-hybrid/">CR-V Hybrid</a> can manage an impressive 40 mpg combined (and it’s quicker).

For reference, the CR-V Hybrid comes with 204 hp. A maximum tow rating of 1,500 pounds is on the weak side, but people rarely use a compact SUV for towing.

It also received a maximum 5-star overall score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (<a href="https://www.nhtsa.gov/ratings" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NHTSA</a>). Standard safety features include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, plus road departure mitigation, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control with a low-speed-follow function.

All 2026 <a href="https://www.kbb.com/compare-cars/results?vehicleIds=477019|477073|477044" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Honda CR-V models</a> now come standard with a 9-inch touchscreen display, which was previously reserved for higher trims. The 2026 Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid is all-new and comes packing up to 320 horsepower and the ability to drive 50 miles on electric power.

The last generation of the Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid (which, for years, was called the RAV4 Prime) was like a secret weapon in Toyota’s lineup, and it was the kind of sleeper driving enthusiasts love. That’s because it had 302 hp and could do zero to 60 mph in a swift 5.7 seconds. This all-new one is even better.
The 2026 version of the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid now has 320 hp and is estimated to travel up to 50 miles on battery power alone – eight more than the prior version. As before, you also get all-wheel drive as standard, which helps with performance and traction in foul weather.
That grip will also surely be utilized in the two new trims of the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid: Woodland and GR Sport. We’ve seen a Woodland before, and it’s the more outdoorsy sibling with all-terrain tires and a taller ride height. The GR Sport looks to be the wild child and is a first for the RAV4 lineup. It represents the most performance-oriented version of the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid.
<h3>Fuel economy</h3>
Toyota has yet to release numbers on the efficiency of the new hybrid powertrain in the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid, but has estimated it can travel up to 50 miles on battery power alone. That would be eight miles beyond the class-leading numbers of the 2025 Toyota RAV4 Plug-in, making this new one all the more a viable alternative to an all-electric vehicle. Of course, the beauty of a plug-in hybrid is that once the juice runs out in the battery, there’s a gasoline engine to power your travels as far and as wide as you’d like to travel.

Fresh Yet Familiar Exterior

The 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid keeps a similar silhouette as the outgoing model but has enough new traits to make it look fresh. We think Toyota did a great balancing act here.
The well-known angular profile and smaller details like the horizontal black line across the D-pillar remain. Even the dimensions are the same: 180.9 inches in length for most models, though the Woodland and GR Sport variants stretch to 181.8.
Also returning is the option for two-tone paint options, including the new Meteor Shower with a black roof on the XSE trim or the GR Sport’s exclusive pairing of Supersonic Red with a black roof.
A sweeping fascia spans the front, and a wide-looking rear bears “RAV4” emblazoned across the middle of the tailgate.
RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid Woodland models portray a more adventurous image with a bit more ground clearance, all-terrain tires, Rigid Industries LED lighting, and roof rails with crossbars.

50 miles battery range: If Toyota’s estimated battery-only driving range holds up, it will easily beat the 30-ish miles that the best of its competitors can do. With that kind of range, fuel fill-ups can be even less frequent.
GR Sport: Getting its GR name from Toyota’s Gazoo Racing department, this first-of-its-kind performance model for the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid spices things up with sport-tuned suspension and steering, added body rigidity, summer tires, and more.
Standard all-wheel drive: Along with a potent powertrain and exceptional driving range, standard all-wheel drive only adds to the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid’s attractiveness.
Toyota Safety Sense 4.0: The latest and greatest version of Toyota’s active safety suite debuts in the 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid. Details are still forthcoming, but even version 3.0 wowed us with features like its Proactive Driving Assist.
Wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto: This is becoming more common on new cars, but it’s not always a given or standard. All 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid models get it, and we’re glad they do.

Upgrade Interior

The 2026 RAV4’s 5-passenger interior, while all new, continues the Toyota tradition of being sensible and spacious. The RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid gets upgrades in the tech department that we are happy to see. All models receive a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, while the touchscreen at its smallest is 10.5 inches or, optionally, 12.9 inches.
Toyota has made climate controls digital and located them on the touchscreen, with hard controls for changing temperature and defrost settings below the screen itself. There is, however, a physical volume knob in the middle. A head-up display is available on XSE models.
Seating materials range from fabric to Toyota’s sturdy SofTex leather-like material. Color options include black or light gray, or the new Mineral shade in the Woodland trim. XSE and GR Sport models get microsuede and SofTex. GR Sport models are further distinguished with GR logos in the front headrests and steering wheel, paddle shifters, and aluminum sport pedals.
Toyota has yet to reveal the full interior specs of the new 2026 RAV4, but seeing as its exterior dimensions are the same as those of the outgoing model, which had generous cargo and passenger room for its class, we predict those positive traits will carry over.

The Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid takes all the things we love about the RAV4 and adds a lot more. In this case, by more, we mean more power – up to 320 horsepower – and more efficiency thanks to the ability to drive up to 50 miles on battery power alone. Like the standard 2026 RAV4 that we review separately, the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid is all new for the 2026 model year. In addition to boasting more power and range than the prior generation, this one has fresh looks, the latest technology, and for the first time, will be available as a performance model called the GR Sport edition or an outdoorsy variant called the Woodland.
The choice of plug-in hybrid <a href="https://www.kbb.com/suv/best-compact-suvs/">compact SUVs</a> is still a bit limited, but the 2026 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid looks to bring its A game to plug-in hybrid variants of the Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, and Mitsubishi Outlander.

Toyota has yet to reveal official pricing, but we estimate the 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid will start around $45,000.
