Driving Impressions

The 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 9 is powered by a 215-horsepower electric motor with rear-wheel drive in its base configuration. The SE and SEL models use a 303-hp dual-motor setup with all-wheel drive, and the trims with &#8220;Performance&#8221; in their name turn up the heat with 422 hp and all-wheel drive. The one we drove was a Performance Calligraphy model, and we were impressed with the electric powertrain&#8217;s confident acceleration, both from a standstill and at speed on the highway. Most families will be well served by the mid-range 303-hp powertrain, and in our experience driving the single-motor version of the Kia EV9, it was a bit underpowered for an SUV this size.
One of the things that stood out to us the most in our testing of the Hyundai Ioniq 9 is that it&#8217;s remarkably quiet. Most EVs are quiet, but even by EV standards, the cabin of the Ioniq 9 is a sanctuary with minimal mechanical noise from the motors or road noise from the tires. This hushed ride contributes to the generally serene experience of driving the Ioniq 9. The handling and braking are adequate and predictable for a midsize SUV, and we noticed the steering firming up quite a bit when we switched to Sport mode. Overall, for daily commuting and long-distance cruising, the Hyundai Ioniq 9 is one of the most comfortable and peaceful ways to get around, this side of a luxury SUV.
<h3>Range and Charging</h3>
Range is a strong suit of the 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 9. It&#8217;s rated at 335 miles with the single-motor, rear-wheel-drive powertrain, 320 miles with the dual-motor setup in the SE and SEL models, and 311 miles with the Performance trims. In the small world of non-luxury 3-row EVs, the Hyundai Ioniq 9 has the best range, and it&#8217;s the only one with a 300+ mile range in every configuration.
The charging speed is similarly impressive. With public DC fast charging, a 350 kW charger can charge the car from 10% to 80% in as little as 24 minutes. With a Tesla V3 Supercharger, it takes 41 minutes. With Level 2 charging, which can be installed in your garage, charging from 10% to 80% takes an estimated nine hours and 40 minutes.

The striking exterior design of the Hyundai Ioniq 9 is smooth, slippery, and aerodynamic, contributing to its efficiency and outstanding range ratings. Although its body is curvy, it has blocky design elements in the light signatures front and back. Hyundai told us the blocky look was partially inspired by Minecraft (no, really). We think it&#8217;s a great marriage of squares and curves to create an interesting design that doesn&#8217;t look quite like anything else outside of Hyundai&#8217;s Ioniq subbrand, strengthening the unique visual identity of Hyundai EVs.

300+ mile range 
Some EVs have a big gap between the max range rating and the range of the one you actually want. Not so much with the Hyundai Ioniq 9. Its max range in the rear-wheel-drive configuration is 335 miles, and even its least efficient variant goes 311 miles on a full charge.
DC Fast Charging 
The Hyundai Ioniq 9 charges from 10% to 80% in as little as 24 minutes with DC fast charging in ideal conditions. This greatly reduces the waiting time involved with keeping your EV charged up on a long drive.
NACS port 
The Hyundai Ioniq 9 comes native with a Tesla-style North American Charging System (NACS) port. This makes it easy to charge up at Tesla charging stations, and you can use any other fast charging station with a CCS adapter, maximizing the charging network that&#8217;s available to the owner.
Highway Driving Assist 2 
Hyundai&#8217;s Highway Driving Assist 2 is one of our favorite semi-autonomous highway driving systems. You still have to keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road, but this natural-feeling system makes the drive safer and more relaxed by keeping you centered in your lane at a safe distance from the car in front of you.
Dual 12.3-inch displays 
The Ioniq 9 has a pair of 12.3-inch displays in a single housing, so they look like one wide screen. The one directly in front of the driver handles instrument cluster duties. The one in the center is a touchscreen for infotainment functions. The look is becoming common, but it’s common because it looks great, and more upscale than this car’s price tag.
Wireless smartphone connectivity 
This SUV comes standard with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. These features make it easy to bring maps, music, and more to the screens in the car without removing your phone from your purse or pocket.

Classy Interior

Interior

The sleek and futuristic design of the Ioniq 9&#8217;s exterior carries over into the interior. The front seats are roomy and comfortable, and although you can&#8217;t get real leather, the H-Tex upholstery in the SEL trim and up feels premium. Two-tone interior color schemes are optional, and we&#8217;re especially fond of the Dark Teal two-tone look available in the Calligraphy trims.
A few features that are standard across the board include heated front seats, dual 12.3-inch displays, wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, wireless phone charging, and tri-zone automatic climate control. Upgrade to the upper trims to unlock luxury features like an Ergo Motion driver&#8217;s seat (derived from the Genesis luxury brand), a panoramic sunroof, power-folding third-row seats, Bose audio, and a head-up display.
Seating space is impressive in all three rows, by midsize SUV standards. The second row is comfortable for adults of just about any size. The front center console is accessible to the second-row passengers thanks to a dual-hinged lid, and a big drawer slides out on the bottom to hold the passengers&#8217; tablets, headphones, snacks, or other sundries. Second-row captain&#8217;s chairs in the Limited and Calligraphy models make the second row more comfortable and the third row easier to access.
The third row has 32 inches of legroom, which is a little more than the Kia EV9 and the gas-powered Hyundai Palisade. It&#8217;s a little tight for adults but suitable for kids. There&#8217;s 21.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, 46.7 cubic feet behind the second row, and 86.9 cubic feet behind the first row. These dimensions also beat the EV9 and Palisade. In the case of Hyundai SUVs, going electric comes with no compromise on interior practicality.

Until quite recently, getting an electric vehicle with three useable rows of seats meant springing for an expensive luxury model. The 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 9 (<a href="https://www.kbb.com/car-news/report-hyundai-ioniq-7-to-become-hyundai-ioniq-9/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">formerly and briefly known as the Ioniq 7</a>) is among the first 3-row all-electric SUVs from a mainstream manufacturer. Every 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 9 uses the same lithium-ion 110.3 kWh battery pack. The base single-motor configuration with rear-wheel drive makes 215 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. Upgrading to the SE and SEL trims brings a dual-motor setup with all-wheel drive producing 303 hp and 446 lb-ft of torque, and the range-topping Performance models pump out 422 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque.
The combined efficiency ratings for the Ioniq 9 are 92 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) for the S trim, 88 MPGe for the SE and SEL models, and 85 MPGe for the Performance trims. For reference, the Kia EV9 gets between 80-89 MPGe, while the VW ID. Buzz gets 83 MPGe with rear-wheel drive and 80 MPGe with all-wheel drive. In this competitive set, the Ioniq 9 gets the most miles out of the juice in its battery, translating to low fuel costs compared to similar 3-row EVs.

The 2026 BMW 4 Series is a range of compact luxury cars offering coupe, convertible and 4-door versions. They each have their charms.

Power, Ride and Handling

The engine in the entry-level 430i is superb. It’s refined yet muscular, making 255 horsepower and able to accelerate from standstill to 60 mph in a brisk 5.5 seconds. That’s almost a second quicker than the entry-level Mercedes-Benz CLE 300 4Matic Coupe (also with 255 hp).
It isn’t just what the 4 Series does, it’s the way that it does it. The suspension and steering definitely have an enthusiast edge, with a feel for the road and the ability to respond crisply to driver inputs. This sportiness requires a bit of a firmer ride than something like an Audi or Mercedes-Benz, which won’t be to everyone’s taste. Take a test drive over some rough roads to see if it works for you. But also make sure to try it on some entertaining roads to let the 4 Series really shine. We’ve found that even the brakes feel confident.
The hugely enjoyable M440i develops 386 hp and will hit 60 mph in about 4.6 seconds.
<h3>Fuel Economy</h3>
We never fail to be impressed by BMW’s ability to create engines that are energetic and efficient. The 430i Coupe achieves 31 mpg in combined city/highway driving. Subtract one mpg when all-wheel drive (AWD), also known as xDrive, is in the picture. The convertible with the same engine is only a little thirstier (30/28 mpg combined). For reference, the Mercedes-Benz CLE 300 4Matic coupe (with all-wheel drive as standard) manages 27 mpg combined while the rest of the CLE lineup returns 26 mpg combined.
The rear-drive M440i Coupe runs to 27 mpg combined. Other variants with this engine are only an mpg or two behind.

Three Body Styles

Not only have our owner reviews enthused about how great the 4 Series feels to drive, but many of them also mention how much they like the styling. As always, buyers have a choice of the 4-door Gran Coupe (with a hatchback), the 2-door Coupe with a fixed metal roof, or the Convertible with a power-retractable soft top.

BMW Curved Display 
A standard feature across the 2026 4 Series range (added in 2024), it includes a digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch infotainment screen. This is the technological heart of the cabin and offers features like augmented video for the navigation, and Remote View through the MyBMW app to check on the car’s surroundings.
iDrive 
We think BMW’s infotainment system is smart and user-friendly, with a menu structure designed for greater efficiency and less distraction while on the move.
Engines 
We have a long-standing admiration of BMW engines because of their ability to deliver excellent and responsive power, while still achieving competitive fuel economy.
Premium package 
This options bundle brings several extra luxury items like a heated steering wheel, wireless charging, keyless entry, and a head-up display.
Driving Assistance Professional package 
Although the 4 Series has plenty of standard safety equipment, this package adds more driver technology. Among the features are adaptive cruise control with steering assistance, Lane Change Assistant, evasive steering assistance, and Extended Traffic Jam Assist.
Dynamic Handling package 
A sport suspension and stronger brakes are part of this package, tipping the usual balance between pliancy and poise more into fun territory.
Harman Kardon audio 
Gotta have music as well, right? The 4 Series offers this excellent surround-sound system.

Balanced Interior

It’s a classy, high-quality interior in the 4 Series. Like other BMW cabins, this one is focused primarily on the serious business of driving fun, with things like excellent ergonomics and supportive front seats. Yet it also brings an air of luxury and technology. It’s where three worlds converge, not just two. BMW cars have a fine dynamic balance and their interiors are calibrated just as carefully &#8212; nothing is lacking, nothing is overdone.
The 4 Series is a compact car, so although there’s sufficient space up front, rear passengers aren’t so well accommodated (particularly in the convertible), while trunk space goes from an acceptable 12 cubic feet in the coupe to a tight 10.6 cubic feet in the convertible. Then again, no one is likely to make a major expedition to Ikea or Costco in a 4 Series.
Unless it’s the 4 Series Gran Coupe. Lifting the hatchback reveals 16.6 cubic feet of luggage area behind the rear seats, expanding to 45.6 cubic feet when those seats are folded. Compare these figures with the 22.6/36.6 cubic feet of the latest Audi A5.

Although based on the 3 Series, the trio of 4 Series models takes that platform in a different direction. The first indication of this is the styling, which we might describe as uncompromising &#8212; it doesn’t try to please the largest number of people, just the ones for whom it resonates. Nor does the 4 Series try to please any adults sitting in the back, but the ones in the front will enjoy the tech, quality, and supportive seats. The driver, meanwhile, gets to experience the kinetic kicks. And the 4 Series offers an inline 6-cylinder engine, a <a href="http://www.kbb.com/bmw/">BMW</a> hallmark, for even greater thrills.
When information comes through for the 4-door Gran Coupe version of the 2026 4 Series, we’ll update this review. In the meantime, a lot of things mentioned here, like engine power and technology, will also apply to the Gran Coupe.

A popular choice is the base 430i Coupe (2-door) with rear-wheel drive. The engine in the 430i version of the 2026 4 Series is a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder unit, augmented by a mild hybrid system for optimum efficiency. It makes 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque.
The turbocharged 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine in the M440i enjoys a total of 386 hp and 398 lb-ft. It also includes a mild hybrid setup.
In both cases, energy goes to a standard rear-wheel drive (RWD) configuration or an optional all-wheel drive system through an 8-speed automatic transmission.

<h3>4-Year/50,000-Mile Warranty</h3>
BMW’s new-vehicle and powertrain warranties last four years or 50,000 miles, whichever happens first. This is typical among European luxury car marques. Roadside assistance is included for that period, with unlimited mileage. Scheduled maintenance is free for three years or 36,000 miles, which is not so typical.
<h3>Safety Ratings</h3>
The 4 Series hasn’t been crash-tested by any agencies in the United States, but it has earned a maximum score of five stars from the Euro NCAP safety program.

The 2026 BMW 5 Series is one of the pillars of the midsize luxury sedan class, thanks to a wide range of talents and tech.

The popular 530i employs a 255-horsepower turbocharged engine, energetic enough to accomplish the sprint from standstill to 60 mph in a lively 5.9 seconds. If all-wheel drive is in the picture, shave off another tenth. The Genesis G80 is in that same ballpark, while the Mercedes-Benz E 350 4Matic is just a couple of tenths behind.
We’re compelled to add that this is perhaps the smoothest 4-cylinder engine we’ve ever encountered, with virtually no vibration. The power delivery is so sweetly linear, it’s a joy to experience. It even turned out to be a little faster than our initial expectations.
BMW says the 540i xDrive can apply its 375 hp to hit 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. That’s only a tenth behind the most powerful BMW Z4 sports car. This happens courtesy of a turbocharged 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine. Most of the time, maximum torque is 384 lb-ft, but a mild hybrid system on board pushes that to 398 lb-ft for short bursts. It also smooths out the fuel-saving engine stop/restart function.
The 550e xDrive is a plug-in hybrid making a total of 483 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, and with the ability to hit 60 mph in 4.1 seconds.
We’ve always admired and enjoyed the way <a href="https://www.kbb.com/bmw/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BMW’s cars</a> manage to combine an engaging driving experience with refinement and suppleness. The 5 Series is enhanced even further by subtle automatic braking to individual wheels for greater effectiveness through quick corners. Overall, the 5 Series is wonderfully pleasant to drive. If there was a bit more of a wow factor, though, we’d be even happier. We realize this seems odd when talking about a BMW, but here we are.
<h3>Fuel Economy</h3>
The rear-drive 530i achieves 31 mpg in combined city/highway driving. All-wheel drive reduces that by just 30 mpg. To compare, the Mercedes-Benz E 350 4Matic manages a still-respectable 27 mpg combined.
The 540i xDrive is rated at 28 mpg combined. The 550e xDrive can cover an impressive 34 miles on battery power alone.
We’re using last year’s figures here, but there shouldn’t be any change for 2026.

Smart Exterior

The entire 5 Series exterior styling plays it kind of safe, nothing too radical. We think that’s a smart move by BMW. The optional M Sport package adds larger front air intakes and 19-inch light-alloy wheels. An illuminated grille is also available. Paint choices include one solid finish, 10 metallic treatments, and three special (more expensive) finishes.

Curved Display 
The jewel of the 5 Series’ dashboard, it incorporates a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen into one cool, curved unit. This is standard equipment.
iDrive 8.5 
BMW’s infotainment system is enhanced by voice activation, over-the-air updates, phone integration, and Wi-Fi. The most commonly used functions are accessed with the least amount of touchscreen taps. We’d prefer it if there were fewer icons on the home screen, however. Augmented reality for the navigation system is also available.
Automatic Park Assistant 
Every new 5 Series has this as standard. It’s a self-parking system for both parallel and perpendicular spaces. The optional Parking Assistant Plus package adds more features such as a 360-degree camera system and remote real-time viewing using an iPhone app.
AirConsole 
This is a gaming platform. It starts out with around 20 titles, which will be expanded in the future. Players can use their phones as controllers &#8212; while the car is parked, we hasten to add.
Interaction Bar 
An option in combustion-powered versions of the 5 Series, this item is integrated into the dashboard and provides the front passenger with touch controls for various functions. It’s also part of the ambient lighting setup.
Highway Assistant 
This is part of the optional Driving Assistance Professional package, bringing hands-free and feet-free driving in certain conditions. One exciting aspect, in our opinion, is Active Lane Change with eye activation. The system may suggest changing lanes, which the driver can set into motion just by looking at the corresponding side mirror. No need to click the turn signal.

Contemporary Interior

This latest 5 Series generation brings a few innovations, like the almost-invisible air vents set into the dash and the large one-piece/dual-display feature. Although the standard seats have been designed for optimum comfort and adjustability, the 5 Series also offers multi-contour front seats, which we’ve found to be among the best in any car. And a simulated (and perforated) leather called Veganza comes into the cabin, covering seats, door panels and the steering wheel (which is a good idea, since non-meat-eaters may not relish holding a steering wheel covered in cow skin).
Real leather is available as an option, however. And an optional M Sport package brings a mix of Veganza and Alcantara (a suede-like material). The Panoramic Sky Lounge is another option. It’s a fixed glass panel pretty much the size of the entire roof.
Rear legroom measures 37 inches, somewhere around average for the class. In real life, it’s sufficiently spacious without being remarkable. Trunk area of 18.4 cubic feet eclipses the Genesis G80 and gets close to the generous 19 cubic feet of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. A couple of golf bags will go in easily.

Even if the 5 Series isn’t quite the benchmark of its class in the same way that the BMW 3 Series is among compact luxury sedans, we still think it’s something special. It’s wonderfully capable, offers a choice of excellent drivetrains, and there’s plenty of great tech available. <a href="https://www.kbb.com/bmw/">BMW</a> has also given the 5 Series a certain finesse. If there was a 5 Series on our hypothetical driveway, we’d consider ourselves extremely fortunate.

We’re happy enough to recommend the base 530i, with or without all-wheel drive (AWD). It’s a popular choice and we’ve enjoyed driving it.
Looking at the rivals, the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/mercedes-benz/e-class/">Mercedes-Benz E-Class</a> (our pick for the class benchmark, by the way) and the new-for-2026 <a href="https://www.kbb.com/audi/a6/">Audi A6</a> start higher. The <a href="https://www.kbb.com/genesis/g80/">Genesis G80</a> begins at a lower price, while the also-new-for-2026 <a href="https://www.kbb.com/lexus/es/2026/">Lexus ES</a> should be the most affordable of this class.

The 530i’s engine is a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder unit making 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Rear-wheel drive (RWD) is the basic setup, all-wheel drive (which BMW calls xDrive) is optional. The Genesis G80 starts out with a little more muscle, but this is more than adequate.
The 540i xDrive has all-wheel drive as standard, as its name implies. It employs a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine developing 375 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque. A mild hybrid system provides a temporary boost to 398 lb-ft of torque.
The 550e xDrive pairs a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine with an electric motor for a substantial total output of 483 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. This goes to all four wheels.
Every gasoline-powered 5 Series employs an 8-speed automatic transmission.

<h3>4-Year/50,000-Mile Warranty</h3>
BMW protects its new vehicles and their powertrains for four years or 50,000 miles, whichever happens first. This is typical among European luxury car makers. The 550e’s hybrid battery is covered for eight years or 100,000 miles. There’s also roadside assistance for the first four years, with unlimited mileage, plus three years or 36,000 miles of free scheduled maintenance.
<h3>Safety Ratings</h3>
This generation of 5 Series has been named a Top Safety Pick by the <a href="https://www.iihs.org/ratings/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Insurance Institute for Highway Safety</a>, the agency’s second-highest accolade. Standard safety equipment includes forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane departure alert, and Active Blind Spot Detection with rear cross-traffic alert. Our one gripe here is that adaptive cruise control costs extra in what is already a pricey luxury car.

What's new for 2026

This generation debuted just two model years ago, so there are only a few changes to the 5 Series this time around. The list of paint choices now includes Frozen Portimao Blue metallic, while Dark Violet or Taupe paired with Atlas Grey leather are fresh interior color schemes. And the 550e Drive plug-in hybrid can now charge its battery quicker than before.

The 2025 Lexus RZ is a plush, hushed, well-equipped luxury compact electric SUV with plenty of standard features and tech.

The RZ 300e is the starting model, sporting a single front-mounted electric motor driving the front wheels with 201 horsepower. The RZ 450e adds a second, rear-mounted electric motor and all-wheel drive (AWD), increasing output to 308 hp.
Both models have a composed suspension, with responsive steering and natural brake feel. The RZ 450e’s five-second zero-to-60-mph time is brisk, and its all-wheel drive gives sure-footed traction. The RZ 300e accelerates from a standstill to 60 mph in about 7.4 seconds — still quick enough for most people, and about on par with the combustion-powered Lexus RX.
Range and Charging
The RZ 300e has an EPA rating of up to 266 miles with 18-inch wheels or 224 miles with optional 20-inch wheels. The more powerful RZ 450e achieves 220 miles with the 18-inch wheels or 196 miles with 20-inch wheels.
Onboard charging with the RZ is limited to 240-volt Level 2 charging, refilling the battery in about 9.5 hours. Fortunately, the RZ is also capable of DC fast charging, replenishing the RZ 300e’s battery to 80% in about 35 minutes, or the RZ 450e’s in about 30 minutes. The RZ employs a CCS1 charging connector for DC charging.

Bumper to bumper, the RZ is a modern Lexus design with crisp angles, flowing surfaces, and bold details. The company&#8217;s distonct spindle grille is inverted into a smooth, aerodynamic form at the nose, while the rear’s muscular fender haunches blend seamlessly into the tail.
The RZ is not especially large, despite all that interior space. It’s a bit shorter than the gas-powered RX, and about the same size as the Model Y. The GV60 and EX40 are a bit shorter overall.

Wireless phone integration 
Both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are wireless in the RZ, as is phone charging. If you prefer to plug in, there are five USB-C ports. For passengers, there’s also Wi-Fi.
Frequency Reactive Dampers 
These computer-controlled dampers absorb and diffuse the worst of the road’s imperfections while also providing great stability. The RZ is the first Lexus to get this advanced technology.
Mark Levinson audio 
Even if you don’t identify as an audiophile, you’ll appreciate the crisp highs and deep bass of this optional audio upgrade. With 13 speakers and 1,800 watts of surround-sound power, this one is worth the extra money.
Advanced Park 
This self-parking system controls the steering, throttle, and brakes to maneuver into or out of tight or tricky parking spaces.
Panoramic View monitor 
This system, standard in the Premium and Luxury trims of the RZ 300e and RZ 450e, uses cameras to provide a 360-degree view of your surroundings. It is perfect for avoiding obstacles or making sure pets and/or kids are clear of the vehicle.
Infotainment system 
The 14-inch screen no longer qualifies as “big” in a world of dash-spanning monoliths, but it’s plenty spacious and clear for interacting with Lexus’ easy-to-use infotainment system. If you prefer, you can control many of the vehicle’s functions through voice commands.

Comfortable and Spacious Interior

The RZ’s 5-seat cabin is a familiar place if you’ve driven other modern Lexus vehicles, and that’s a good thing. The materials are rich and textured as well as visually pleasing, and the controls feel solid and substantial. The front seats are comfortable and spacious, although some of us have noted the seating position feels a bit higher than normal.
This year’s new addition to the RZ range, the base model, makes its cost savings by doing without some of the more opulent elements of the higher trims while retaining the core luxury staples. For instance, the base models of the 300e and 450e don’t offer any form of ambient lighting, while the Premium and Luxury trims offer increasingly complex lighting themes. On the other hand, the base model uses the same NuLuxe-trimmed  (simulated leather) upholstery as the Premium trim, and all three trims have the same 8-way power-adjustable front seats.
The RZ has a good balance between size and space. The second row offers 37.5 inches of legroom, about the same as the GV60 and EX40 but a bit less than the Model Y. The RZ’s cargo area is the largest of the group, however, with 34.9 cubic feet behind the second row. That’s about five to 10 cubic feet more than most of the competition, and more than double the EX40’s 16 cubic feet.

The Lexus RZ’s all-electric nature suits Lexus’ whisper-quiet cabins and plush accommodations to perfection, making the most of its quiet drivetrain and supple ride. That’s not to say the RZ isn’t also athletic, with both powertrain variants capable of brisk acceleration. Maximum range is 266 miles, which is plenty for most folks, but not as much as some might want for regular road-trip usage, especially if you’re only charging to 80% for battery longevity. Still, the RZ’s range handily exceeds most people’s daily commuting requirements, and it can be fast-charged to 80% in about 30 minutes or charged overnight at home.

<a href="https://www.kbb.com/tesla/model-y/2025/">Tesla’s Model Y</a>, the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/genesis/gv60/">Genesis GV60</a>, and the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/volvo/ex40/">Volvo EX40</a> (previously known as the XC40 Recharge) are the closest natural competitors to the Lexus RZ, offering functions and features at similar prices. The Model Y is on the less expensive end of the price spectrum, but it’s also the least luxurious in terms of accommodations and features, starting around $47,000. The GV60 and EX40 both start around $54,000, while the Lexus RZ undercuts them all by a fair margin, starting around $44,000 in the new-for-2025 base trim on the 300e model. Even stepping up to the midlevel RZ 300e Premium or opting for the base 450e only takes the price up to about $48,000. This makes the Lexus RZ a comparative value in the compact luxury electric SUV class.

Battery & Efficiency

Thanks to their different output levels and packaging requirements, the two RZ models deploy slightly different battery packs. The RZ 300e uses a 72.8-kWh unit, while the 450e comes with a slightly smaller 71.4-kWh counterpart. Both variants are extremely efficient, offering up to 125 MPGe in 300e form and 107 MPGe in 450e guise. In both cases, the greatest efficiency is achieved with 18-inch wheels. Those MPGe figures are at the top of the class, tying the Tesla Model Y’s best.
4-Year/50,000-Mile Warranty
The basic Lexus new-vehicle warranty lasts four years or 50,000 miles, whichever happens first, a typical span among luxury vehicles. Powertrains are covered for six years or 70,000 miles, which is better than most European competitors. The battery is covered by an 8-year/100,000-mile warranty.
Safety Ratings
The RZ has previously been awarded the highest accolade of Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (<a href="https://www.iihs.org/ratings/">IIHS</a>), and the 2025 RZ earns a 5-Star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (<a href="https://www.nhtsa.gov/">NHTSA</a>). A comprehensive array of safety technology is standard in the RZ.

The Lexus RZ was introduced as a single model for 2023, and last year it gained the RZ 300e to complement the range-topping RX 450e. This year, the RZ gains an entry-level trim for both variants, bringing the tally up to three trims each: Standard, Premium, and Luxury.

The 2025 Volvo XC90 gets a revamp this year, with a freshened exterior and updated interior to help keep it near the front of the midsize 3-row luxury SUV class.

We haven&#8217;t yet driven this latest iteration of the XC90, but we expect it to drive much like the previous model thanks to the shared core architecture and powertrains.
The XC90 B5 makes 247 horsepower from a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, and in driving the previous model, we&#8217;ve found there’s plenty of pep for freeway merges and all the usual day-to-day stuff, but it lacks the punch some might prefer in a luxury SUV. The midlevel B6 ups the power to a more interesting level, with 295 hp, thanks to the addition of more forced induction. At the top of the lineup is the XC90 T8, making 455 hp and hitting 60 mph in a brisk five seconds.
Regardless of variant, we expect the XC90 will continue to favor comfort over outright performance. We think that’s exactly the way it should be with a family SUV.
Relative to the competition, the XC90 offers a good mix of power and value. Fans of high-value, fun-driving family vehicles should also consider the 290-hp Acura MDX or the 300-hp Genesis GV80.
Fuel Economy
All three 2025 Volvo XC90 powertrains have all-wheel drive (AWD) as standard. The entry point is the B5, with a turbocharged 4-cylinder gasoline engine and a mild hybrid system for 26 mpg in combined city/highway driving. The midgrade XC90 B6 adds a supercharger to the B5’s setup for more power and 23 mpg combined. Finally, the T8 pairs the turbocharged 4-cylinder with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system to achieve 33 miles of all-electric range and the equivalent of 58 mpg combined.
All in all, the XC90 gets good gas mileage for its class. Comparing base models, the XC90’s 26 mpg beats the GV80 and the MDX (both 21 mpg combined), and even the BMW X5 xDrive40i (25 mpg combined). Most of the remaining rivals sit between these bookends.

Subtly Modified Exterior

Although it’s been updated for 2025, you’d be forgiven for not being able to tell at first glance — the changes are subtle. But considering how arguably good-looking the XC90 remains even now, nearly a decade on from its launch, Volvo is demonstrating a brilliant “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it” strategy.

Updated infotainment software 
The 12.3-inch driver information display and 11.2-inch center screen have been updated to Volvo’s latest interface, making the most of this Google-based infotainment system.
Refreshed interior 
The XC90’s premium materials and subtle color palette make for one of the most compelling and comfortable cabins in this class.
Advanced safety systems 
From the Pilot Assist steering guidance and speed control system to the blind-spot, pedestrian, cross-traffic, and reverse detection systems, the XC90 puts a premium on keeping its occupants safe.
Adaptive air suspension 
While many premium SUV makers use an adaptive air suspension to deliver varying levels of (often too-stiff) performance, the XC90’s adaptive air suspension is focused on comfort while maintaining composure.
Abundant technology 
The XC90&#8217;s tech menu includes wireless phone charging, a host of USB and 12-volt ports, Apple CarPlay, a head-up display, and a premium Bowers &amp; Wilkins audio system.
T8 PHEV 
Whether you prioritize the 33-mile all-electric range, or 455 hp and 523 lb-ft of torque, the XC90 T8’s plug-in hybrid drivetrain is both practical and fun.

Refreshed Interior

The larger central touchscreen and redesigned dashboard layout help bring the XC90 in line with the new EX30 and EX90 electric SUVs, and the updated software brings a host of fresh features and apps. This tech can also be expanded further after purchase thanks to over-the-air (OTA) updates.
Other new interior features include additional storage space in the center console, an additional cup holder, and a relocated wireless charging pad. Updated lighting, air vents, and decorative panels add to the revamped look.
Front-row comfort is great, with plenty of legroom and headroom for most. The second row is roomy but not expansive, with 37 inches of legroom in both the 6-seat and 7-seat configurations. All models have 31.9 inches of legroom in the third row, which makes it a good option for kids but a temporary solution at best for taller teens and adults.

The 2025 Volvo XC90’s updates play to its strengths — it was already a refined and good-looking (in our eyes) luxury SUV. Now it’s even more so, with a dash of upgraded technology. The XC90 seats six or seven in its upscale cabin, with comfortable seats, especially in the first two rows. High-end audio, premium materials, and cool Scandinavian design enhance the XC90’s appeal even further.
On top of that, the XC90 gets excellent safety ratings, making it a great choice for family transport.

The 2025 XC90 offers a choice of three powertrains: The base B5 and midrange B6 are both mild hybrids, while the top-spec T8 is a plug-in hybrid. All three use an 8-speed automatic transmission.
The B5 employs a 247-hp turbocharged 4-cylinder engine producing 258 lb-ft of torque. Maximum towing capacity is 4,000 pounds.
The B6 uses a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder unit rated for 295 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. The B6 can tow up to 6,000 pounds.
Finally, there’s the XC90 T8, a PHEV with a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that develops 455 hp and 523 lb-ft of torque. The XC90 T8 can tow up to 5,000 pounds.
4-Year/50,000-Mile Warranty
Volvo’s vehicle and powertrain warranties last four years or 50,000 miles, whichever happens first, and include roadside assistance, a typical arrangement for luxury marques. The Volvo XC90 has been named a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (<a href="https://www.iihs.org/ratings/">IIHS</a>) and earned the maximum 5-Star overall score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (<a href="https://www.nhtsa.gov/ratings">NHTSA</a>).

The 2025 Volvo XC90’s updates don’t amount to an all-new vehicle, as the same core architecture and powertrains are in this new model. However, the new XC90’s exterior has been updated, the interior has been redesigned to echo the new EX30 and EX90 electric SUVs, and the digital user experience has been upgraded to match those new EVs as well. The central touchscreen is now larger (11.2 inches) and higher-resolution (21% greater pixel density), and there are new interior trim choices.

The 2025 Lexus GX is a midsize luxury SUV with a rare combination of real off-road capability and high-end luxury features.

Despite being a truck-based, body-on-frame SUV, the 2025 Lexus GX has a composed and crisp driving demeanor. The brakes and steering are responsive, yet it’s also comfortable and compliant, as expected of an off-roader. Despite the day-to-day ease of driving and maneuvering, especially compared with the previous generations, this GX remains decidedly rugged and not car-like.
The 349-horsepower, twin-turbocharged V6 is potent, and a massive 479 lb-ft of torque helps accelerate the GX from a standstill to 60 mph in an athletic 6.5 seconds. That much power and acceleration mean zero issues when making a fast freeway merge, and all that torque helps the GX conquer surprisingly steep gradients. The even more capable Overtrail and Overtrail+ models get an extra inch of ride height for 2025, enabling excursions further into the wild.
Fuel Economy
The GX’s fuel economy isn’t great — about the same as a Chevrolet Suburban — but it’s not wildly off-target among off-road-focused luxury SUVs. At 17 mpg combined, the GX 550 fits between the combined ratings of the Mercedes-Benz G550 (18 mpg) and the Land Rover Defender 110 (16 mpg).
Even compared to something like the efficiency-focused plug-in hybrid BMW X5 xDrive50e, it’s not all doom and gloom for the GX. Once the X5 PHEV’s batteries are depleted, it gets just 22 mpg combined. Options like the Audi Q7 (20 mpg) and Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4Matic (21 mpg) achieve noticeably better gas mileage at the expense of much less off-road ability.

Heroic Exterior

Like a futuristic movie’s hero vehicle, the 2025 Lexus GX’s rugged, carved-from-a-block-of-silicon styling is eye-catching. From the iconic spindle grille to the bluff rear and its wide LED light bar, the overall effect is one of rugged elegance.

Traffic Jam Assist 
Taking over the steering, throttle, and braking — in the right conditions — this feature basically drives itself in stop-and-go traffic. It’s a welcome feature for anyone who deals with traffic regularly.
Overtrail trims 
The Overtrail and Overtrail+ trims of the GX add real off-road extras like a limited-slip locking center differential, larger all-terrain tires, detachable front and rear stabilizer bars, and a host of off-road electronic aids. For 2025, they also gain an extra inch of ground clearance.
Proactive Driving Assist 
Rather than a self-driving system, Lexus’ Proactive Driving Assist takes a subtler approach, gently adjusting steering and speed in anticipation of corners, other vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians. Basically, it takes some of the cognitive load off the driver’s shoulders.
Dynamic Sky roof 
Opt for the top-of-the-line GX 550 Luxury+, and this massive panoramic glass roof is included. Its defining magic trick is switching from transparent to opaque at the push of a button.
21-speaker surround-sound 
Mark Levinson audio systems are always excellent, and this 21-speaker surround-sound example underlines that reputation.
Phone as a key 
Who wants to carry a bulky key fob if they don’t have to? If you’re like most Americans, your phone is rarely out of reach, so using an app to make it work like a key is a no-brainer for convenience. As a bonus, you can send digital keys to friends or family if you need to.

Capable Interior

Bold, high-tech, and ruggedly luxurious, the GX’s cabin is one of our favorites. Contrasting with its more avant-garde exterior, the GX’s interior is more conventional and businesslike.
Three-row seating for up to seven occupants (except in 2-row-only, 5-seat Overtrail trims) is spacious and comfortable until you get to the third row, which is a bit short on legroom (31.9 inches) and other space. It’s fine for occasional use, but those who regularly need a third row will be better served by a vehicle like the Lexus TX. Second-row legroom is also fair at 36.7 inches, an inch less than the BMW X5 and more than four inches less than the Mercedes-Benz GLE.
Cargo room is good for the class, with 10.3 cubic feet behind the third row, or 40.2 cubic feet behind the second row with the third row folded, or 45.6 cubic feet in Overtrail models that skip the third row. For comparison, the Land Rover Defender 110 offers 34 cubic feet behind its second row, and the BMW X5 has 33.9 cubic feet.

Other midsize luxury SUVs offer impressive luxury and good off-road performance, but the truck-based architecture that underpins the Lexus GX sets it apart from the midsize field. Add to that its 7-occupant capacity, Lexus-grade cabin materials and design, a host of modern tech, and a muscular turbocharged engine, and you have a recipe for a truly impressive machine. As an eminently civilized way to explore completely uncivilized territory, the Lexus GX is hard to beat.

The 2025 GX starts in the mid-$60,000 region and runs up through to the mid-$80,000 bracket. That gives it a similar range to its nearest natural competitor, the equally luxurious and off-road-capable <a href="https://www.kbb.com/land-rover/defender-110/">2025 Land Rover Defender 110</a> &#8212; up to a point, anyway. The Defender carries on into the $170,000 area, thanks to its high-performance V8 and Octa variants. Likewise, the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/mercedes-benz/g-class/">Mercedes-Benz G-Class</a> starts around $150,000 and heads upward from there. Compared with more typical luxury SUVs, the GX’s pricing is about on par with the likes of <a href="https://www.kbb.com/audi/q7/">Audi Q7</a>, <a href="https://www.kbb.com/bmw/x5/2025/">BMW X5</a>, and <a href="https://www.kbb.com/mercedes-benz/gle/">Mercedes-Benz GLE</a>.
