We especially love the 536-horsepower V8 in the 760i xDrive. It sounds glorious and its power delivery is just as wonderful. BMW says this car can sprint from a standstill to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds &#8212; a feat that would please most sports car owners. If you’re going to drive a flagship luxury sedan in such a manner, this BMW is the one to have, which is exactly the conclusion reached by about half of all 7 Series buyers.
For a little performance context, the 496-hp Mercedes-Benz S 580 hits 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. Even the most modest BMW 740i will still hit 60 mph in 5.2 seconds, which really isn’t slow at all, and similar to the rest of the class.
Just like a typical flagship sedan, the 7 Series can be super-luxurious, extremely comfortable (an air suspension is standard), and can lay on all sorts of gadgetry to help pass time on long trips. Yet it’s always had an edge, a different personality waiting to come out whenever the accelerator pedal is pressed hard and the steering wheel is turned with a bit of gusto. Select the Sport driving mode, and the responses and agility of the 7 Series seem more like those of the compact 3 Series than the anticipated attributes of a 2.5-ton palace on four wheels.
The 750e xDrive plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) makes a healthy total of 483 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque.
<h3>Fuel Economy</h3>
The popular 760i xDrive achieves 20 mpg in combined city/highway driving, just one mile shy of the Mercedes-Benz S 580 4Matic. The 740i returns 28 mpg combined, listing one mile per gallon with all-wheel drive. The 750e xDrive PHEV can run for 35 miles on battery power alone.

Love it or walk away slightly mystified, the 7 Series definitely has its own look going on. It works for us. All in black, with black wheels and a black grille, we could imagine such a car being a star turn in a high-budget Netflix thriller series set in Germany. Other color choices include Frozen Tanzanite Blue Metallic ($5,000) and two-tone paint schemes.
Sizewise, the current 7 Series is about five inches longer than its predecessor, about two inches taller, and almost a couple of inches wider. It’s big and imposing; BMW imports only the long-wheelbase version of the 7 Series into the United States. Mercedes-Benz does the same with the S-Class.

iDrive 
We’ve found BMW’s infotainment operating system to be excellent and user-friendly, and will obey voice commands. The 7 Series comes standard with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, wireless charging, and over-the-air update capability.
Sky Lounge LED Panoramic Roof 
A standard feature in the 7 Series, this is a huge glass roof with thousands of LEDs set inside, creating a series of interesting patterns.
Luxury rear seating 
Even though the 7 Series is enjoyable from the driver’s seat, this kind of car is expected to provide lavish accommodation for rear passengers. An optional package brings heated/ventilated/massaging seats with powered adjustment.
Bowers &amp; Wilkins audio 
It’s an expensive option, but we think this 1,965-watt, 40-speaker surround-sound system (including speakers set into the front headrests) is beyond superb. “Loud and clear” only begins to describe it.
Theater Screen 
Dropping down from the ceiling, this massive 31.3-inch, high-resolution display is a must-have option for VIPs ensconced in the rear seats. It’s compatible with streaming services and Amazon Fire TV, comes with the Bowers &amp; Wilkins system, and a rear window shade that closes automatically when the screen is deployed.
Parking Assistant Professional 
This optional self-parking feature includes a 360-degree camera system, illuminated grille, plus a drive recorder and a remote theft recorder. We think it’s well worth considering.

Successive generations of cars tend to grow larger. We did a little digging and found that this generation of 7 Series has about an inch less rear legroom than before. But 43.3 inches is still a lot of real estate in which to stretch your legs.
Everything is put together in a suitably high-class manner. This cabin is the place where fine leather meets smart tech (which can change the mood of the entire car), then gives everyone a comfortable place to sit. Who needs a Rolls-Royce? The 7 Series offers self-closing doors and some of the best massaging seats on which we’ve ever rested our weary bones.
This is also the most screen-tastic 7 Series ever. A large unit up front (the BMW Curved Display) contains a section for driver information as well as an infotainment touchscreen. Even the rear seats have screens in the door panels for climate control.
The BMW Individual Composition program offers buyers a wide range of leathers and wood trim to personalize their new 7 Series to a greater degree.
Trunk space is 19.1 cubic feet, one of the biggest in the class.

BMW vehicles are renowned for their handling, yet BMW engines are also excellent. One of the company’s hallmarks is a 6-cylinder unit, with those cylinders all in a line (as opposed to a V-formation). That’s the 740i’s setup, which coaxes a turbocharged 375 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque from a 3.0-liter displacement.
This amount of power is perfectly adequate while balancing relatively reasonable fuel economy. Some rivals start out with more power, some have less.
At its most affordable, the 740i deploys rear-wheel drive (RWD). All-wheel drive (AWD) is optional.
The 750e xDrive plug-in hybrid employs a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 and an electric motor to make 483 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque (which isn’t quite as powerful as the S-Class PHEV, but gutsy enough). Drive goes to all four wheels as standard. Using just the battery, it can travel for around 35 miles.
The twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 in the 760i xDrive is a thing of mechanical beauty, endowed with 536 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque.
All engines connect to an 8-speed automatic transmission; premium gasoline is required throughout.
<h3>4-Year/50,000-Mile Warranty</h3>
BMW covers its vehicles and powertrains with a warranty lasting four years or 50,000 miles, whichever occurs first. This coverage is typical for European luxury car makers. There’s also roadside assistance for the first four years, with unlimited mileage, plus three years or 36,000 miles of complimentary scheduled maintenance.
<h3>Safety Ratings</h3>
Big luxury cars are not usually crash-tested by independent agencies. Still, there’s plenty of standard safety equipment &#8212; such as forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, Active Blind Spot Detection, adaptive headlights, and lane departure warning. The optional Driving Assistance Professional package is worth the investment, adding assistance for changing lanes, evasive steering and emergency stops, plus a hands-free highway driving feature.

The stylish 2026 Mini Countryman is a wonderful blend of all-wheel-drive can-do, spirited performance, and European driving dynamics.

Power, Ride, And Handling

The base version of the new Countryman comes with 241 horsepower and can sprint from a standstill to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds. The BMW X1 has the same amount of power, yet is quicker to 60 mph by 0.3 of a second. The top version of the Mazda CX-30 has 250 hp and can hit 60 mph in just under six seconds. But the Countryman is still fast enough for fun.
The thing about Mini vehicles is that they’re engaging to drive — crisp, responsive, and eager. Even though the Countryman is bigger than its regular hatchback stablemate, it’s still a bona fide Mini, and there’s plenty of enjoyment to be had. That goes double in the John Cooper Works model, which has 312 hp — a lot of punch for a small vehicle. It does the 60-mph sprint in just 5.4 seconds.
We especially like the Go-Kart mode (essentially a Sport mode), in which the automatic transmission stays in a lower gear longer, enabling brisk acceleration. The brakes also feel confident at the other end of the performance envelope. We feel obliged to add the JCW version rides on the firm side, so test drive it over some rough surfaces to see if that will work for you. However, the Countryman generally rides nicer on the highway than the smaller, more traditional Mini Cooper hatchback, given its longer wheelbase.
Fuel Economy
The Mini Countryman S returns 24 city/32 highway/27 combined mpg, while the more potent JCW model gets 23 city/30 highway/26 combined mpg. Premium gas is recommended for both, giving the Countryman above-average fuel costs for a small SUV. The closely related BMW X1 xDrive28i provides 28 mpg in combined driving.

All-in-the-Family Looks

With that sort of wonky hexagon shape, the headlights really look different from any Countryman that’s come before. As we become more familiar with the new design, it seems there’s a kind of Land Rover Defender influence — more squared-off and SUV-like than before.
Otherwise, it seems the new Countryman will continue to offer popular features like the roof and side mirror housings in a contrasting color to the rest of the vehicle, taillights that evoke the British flag, and a choice of cool wheel designs. We like that the Countryman has short overhangs, maximizing space between the wheels and that planted stance, making it look more capable and a bit tougher.

All-wheel drive 
All-wheel drive is standard across the new Countryman lineup, providing an extra layer of reassurance in slippery conditions and aiding optimum traction in the dry.
Ambient light 
The back of the touchscreen can bathe the surrounding dashboard area in lights of different colors, chosen according to which Experience mode is selected.
Recycled materials 
Mini deploys recycled materials in the cabin, a small contribution to sustainability that gets the thumbs-up from us.
Hands-free driving 
For the first time, the Countryman offers the option of hands-free driving, but drivers must still keep their eyes on the road.
BMW inspired 
Utilizing the platform and turbo four from the BMW X1, the Countryman provides a taste of the BMW experience. Although it has traded off some of its Mini spunkiness for added comfort to appeal more to traditional subcompact SUV shoppers, it retains better-than-average driving dynamics.
OLED infotainment display 
The OLED infotainment display is a leap forward in display technology, providing better contrast, faster response time, better color saturation, and less energy consumption than LCD-based screens.

Forward-Looking Interior

The dominant feature in the 2026 Countryman is the large and round (9.4 inches in diameter) infotainment display, now using crisp and vibrant OLED (organic light-emitting diode) technology. The system itself has a voice-controlled digital assistant. Say &#8220;Hey, Mini,&#8221; then give a command like &#8220;call home,&#8221; and the order is carried out.
Although we’ve found that the head-up display provides vital data directly in front of the driver, a lot of other information is only available on the large screen in the center of the dashboard. We’d prefer a proper instrument cluster, even a small one, for those versions that won’t have the head-up display. The touchscreen also has various modes to scroll through, but drivers will likely settle on one and stick with it.
This new Countryman is almost 2.5 inches taller and more than five inches longer than the previous generation, so there’s more space for passengers and cargo. The luggage area behind the rear seats measures around 16 cubic feet, larger than a typical midsize sedan’s trunk. Fold those seats down to create about 51 cubic feet. If this is an important consideration, keep in mind that the Ford Bronco Sport has much more, as do many other subcompact rivals.

After a thorough overhaul last year, the 2026 Mini Countryman casts a larger shadow than it did before. Moreover, we like that, although larger, it didn’t lose a scintilla of its iconic Mini personality. We can’t say enough about its driving dynamics and willingness to bust out of the gate when the light goes green. This is particularly so with the high-performance Countryman JCW. So, there you have the Countyman in a nutshell: personality and eager performance, plus more hauling capacity than any other Mini.
We&#8217;ve logged hundreds of hours driving and evaluating this generation of <a href="https://www.kbb.com/suv/best-subcompact-suvs/">subcompact SUVs</a>, including the Mini Countryman.

The 2026 Mini Countryman starts at $37,165. That’s for the S trim and includes the factory-to-dealer delivery charge. The JCW version begins at $44,525.

It’s not even a contest, Mini sells more Countryman S models than it does the high-performance JCW. Mini also offers the fully electric Countryman SE, which we detail elsewhere.
Another stylish subcompact SUV with the ability to entertain is the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/mazda/cx-30/">Mazda CX-30</a>, starting around $27,000 — quite a bit less than the Countryman. Or perhaps the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/ford/bronco-sport/">Ford Bronco Sport</a> might fit the bill — again, beginning lower than this Mini. Looking at more premium choices, the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/bmw/x1/">BMW X1</a> kicks off in the low $40,000 region, with the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/volvo/xc40/">Volvo XC40</a> just below it, and the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/audi/q3/">Audi Q3</a> below that. The <a href="https://www.kbb.com/lexus/ux/">Lexus UX</a> starts in the high $30,000s.

The 2026 Countryman S All4 has a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine making 241 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. A turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine is also in the John Cooper Works Countryman, although this one produces 312 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. In both cases, power runs through a 7-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive is standard.
All things considered, the Countryman delivers more aggressive performance than most of its subcompact SUV rivals.
4-Year/50,000-Mile Warranty
Mini’s new-vehicle and powertrain warranties last four years or 50,000 miles, whichever happens first. That&#8217;s the typical coverage offered by European automakers.
Safety
Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (<a href="https://www.nhtsa.gov/ratings">NHTSA</a>) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (<a href="https://www.iihs.org/ratings">IIHS</a>) has issued safety ratings for this generation of Countryman. Every Countryman comes with advanced safety tech such as automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assist.

This 1.5-liter turbo 4-cylinder engine makes 175 horsepower, which these days is merely acceptable or below average for the class. A Honda CR-V, for example, produces 190 hp in gasoline-only form, while the hybrid models create 204. The all-new 2026 Toyota RAV4 comes standard with a hybrid powertrain that makes 226 hp in its least potent form.
These caveats made known, we discovered in our testing that the Chevy Equinox gets up to speed just fine on freeways, is easy to maneuver around town, and has a quiet cabin. Despite its chunkier all-terrain tires, we even found that to be the case in the outdoorsy Activ trim. Given the choice, we prefer all-wheel-drive versions of the 2026 Equinox. Those get an 8-speed automatic transmission and more grunt — 203 lb-ft of torque versus the 185 put out by front-wheel drive models. Front-drive versions are also saddled with a continuously variable automatic transmission. CVTs are efficient but can drone a bit when you get on the accelerator, and don’t help the cause of what is already a somewhat coarse-sounding engine.
We should note the Equinox has paddle shifters — awkwardly placed a whisper away from the audio controls on the back of the steering wheel — but they won’t work unless you hit the “L” button in the steering wheel. It’s a bit of an odd setup, but we’re told they are more for use in low-speed precision maneuvers, not race car antics.
Fuel economy
The Chevrolet Equinox is EPA-rated at 27 mpg combined in city/highway driving for front-wheel-drive models and 26 mpg for all-wheel-drive variants. Competitors like the Honda CR-V and Hyundai Tucson are a bit more efficient and also offer hybrid powertrains. The 2026 Toyota RAV4 will come exclusively with a hybrid powertrain, and while its EPA numbers are forthcoming, the last RAV4 Hybrid did 39 mpg with all-wheel drive. A number like that can tally significant fuel savings over the years.

Tougher-Looking Exterior

Although each of the three grades shows a slightly different face, the latest Equinox looks tougher and more capable than those that have gone before. The LT and Activ each get 17-inch wheel designs, while the sporty-looking RS uses 19-inch wheels. No matter the wheel size or design, they’re framed in a squared-off wheel opening in a flared fender. Highlighting the RS are blacked-out elements like logos and outboard mirrors, a wider grille with a high-gloss finish, and those 19-inch wheels. Stepping to the outdoor adventure-oriented Activ trim, it gains gray-finished accents and blacked-out badging.
We are fans of the two-tone color options, with a contrasting roof in white or black. For 2026, you can now get your Equinox in Polar White.

Dual displays 
Two large displays dominate the instrument panel. Directly behind the steering wheel is an 11-inch driver-configurable digital color gauge and driver-information display. Immediately to its right is an 11.3-inch infotainment touchscreen commanding a Google Built-in operating system.
Electronic Precision Shift 
The electronic shifter is located on the steering column rather than in the center console. This frees up console space and is becoming more common.
Heated front seats 
Standard on every model, the front seats and the steering wheel are heated.
Chevy Safety Assist 
Every 2026 Equinox comes with this bundle of advanced safety technology, which includes automatic emergency braking with bike and pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, and high-beam assist. These features are in addition to others like blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear-park assist, and adaptive cruise control.
Teen Driver 
This technology, standard across the Equinox lineup, allows parents a hands-on method to encourage safe driving behavior in their teens by activating customizable vehicle settings and monitoring driving performance.
All-wheel drive 
Available with all three trim levels, this transparent system allows drivers more capability and control in foul weather. It also gets you an 8-speed automatic transmission and more torque.

Tech-Focused Cabin

The cockpit is potentially the Equinox’s greatest asset. Behind the steering wheel is an 11-inch driver-configurable gauge and information display. Next to it, an 11.3-inch touchscreen is the command center for the infotainment system. The transmission selector moves to the steering column, opening up more usable room in the center console. For 2026, the base LT models get the drive mode selector dial in the center console that had previously been reserved for the Activ and RS trims.
While the 2026 Equinox is a bit longer and wider than other compact SUVs, its exterior dimensions don’t make it among the roomiest inside. Behind the second row of seats, the Equinox offers 29.8 cubic feet of cargo volume. The Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, and Kia Sportage offer closer to 40 cubic feet. Folding the rear seats creates 63.5 cubic feet of space in the Equinox. Compare that to the CR-V’s 76.5 cubic feet and the Sportage’s 74.1 figure. Passengers fare better, with the Equinox claiming above-average EPA interior volume figures. Second-row legroom is 39.9 inches. That’s still less than that of the Sportage and CR-V, but roomy nonetheless.

In a sea of excellent competitors, the Chevrolet Equinox swims midpack with other small SUVs and even brings a few flashes of greatness. The Equinox was totally redesigned just last year, making it one of the freshest choices in the most popular and most crowded vehicle segment that includes benchmarks like the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V.
The Equinox’s recent revamp injected this contender with a rugged exterior design and an innovative interior. What it didn’t do was move the needle in terms of powertrain. Where some rivals offer more powerful models and/or hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants, the Equinox makes do with just one choice of engine (there is the all-electric <a href="https://www.kbb.com/chevrolet/equinox-ev/">Equinox EV</a>, a different model reviewed separately). Also, the Equinox offers only three trims, whereas others offer far more. Its lack of powertrain and trim choices notwithstanding, the Equinox remains a solid choice for compact SUV buyers looking for a 5-passenger hauler from an American brand.

At its roughly $30,000 starting price for an LT trim, the Equinox is in line with the entry point of others in this segment. With only three trims to choose from, the Equinox’s pricing gap isn’t as wide as rivals that offer seven or even eight trims. The Active and RS trims begin at the same price, and loading one with all-wheel drive and some options still puts them securely under $40,000. Higher trims of rivals can easily top that, but they also offer far more choice of trims, powertrains, and options. In case you’re wondering, the Chevy Equinox’s slightly upscale cousin, the GMC Terrain, uses the same powertrain and is also only available in three trims, but can reach into the mid-$40,000 range with options.

The Chevrolet Equinox’s resale value is predicted to remain below that of class leaders like the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/toyota/rav4/2026/">Toyota RAV4</a>, <a href="https://www.kbb.com/honda/cr-v/">Honda CR-V</a>, and <a href="https://www.kbb.com/subaru/forester/">Subaru Forester</a>. Keep in mind that the higher the resale value, the more money you can recoup when it’s time to sell or trade in your vehicle.

As mentioned, the Equinox only offers one powertrain, and this 1.5-liter turbo 4-cylinder isn’t exactly groundbreaking. Its 175 hp lags behind all competitors except the smaller <a href="https://www.kbb.com/mitsubishi/eclipse-cross/">Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross</a>, and is the same as the GMC Terrain, the Equinox’s kissing cousin. All-wheel-drive models get an 8-speed automatic transmission and a bit more torque, and that’s the powertrain we’d recommend, especially if you live in colder climates where slick roads are common.
3-Year/36,000-Mile Warranty
Chevy backs the Equinox with a bumper-to-bumper limited warranty for three years or 36,000 miles. It also covers the powertrain for five years or 60,000 miles. This coverage is about typical for the segment.

The Chevy Equinox was all-new just last year, so updates for 2026 are limited to a new exterior color and the drive mode selector dial becoming standard on all models.

The redesigned 2026 Nissan Leaf grows into a stylish SUV, now with up to 303 miles of range, two charge ports, and the latest tech.

The 2026 Nissan Leaf is powered by a 174-horsepower electric motor and front-wheel drive in the base S trim, but every other model uses a 214-horsepower motor. We expect the new Leaf’s driving experience to improve upon the outgoing model’s, which had less power and torque. The old Leaf was getting long in the tooth, but we always enjoyed its pleasant and agreeable driving character with the smooth and quiet performance synonymous with EVs.
<h3>Range and Charging</h3>
The 2026 Nissan Leaf’s maximum range rating crushes the old one’s; it now gets up to 303 miles of range on a full charge, versus the 2025 model&#8217;s 212-mile max range. Notably, only the S+ trim gets that 300-plus-mile range, while the SV+ is rated at 288 miles, and the Platinum+ gets 259 miles. This beats the max range ratings of the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/kia/niro-ev/">Kia Niro EV</a> and Hyundai Kona Electric, which don’t reach the 300-mile mark.
Nissan estimates a charge time of 10% to 80% in 35 minutes with DC fast charging, which is about on par with modern-day EVs. One big perk of the new Leaf is its two charge ports; a familiar J1772 port on one side and a Tesla-style NACS port on the other.

Sleek Exterior

A sleek and modern exterior design is a highlight of the redesigned 2026. After spending two generations as a compact hatchback since its introduction, the Leaf has adapted to changing tastes and turned into a small SUV. The original Leaf wasn’t known for attractive design, its second generation got a little better, and we can confidently say that this is the best-looking Nissan Leaf yet. Size-wise, it’s Nissan’s smallest EV, slotted below the Ariya.
