The “Maserati of SUVs” is the 2022 Maserati Levante. It’s the product of an Italian brand that has breathed performance and style since 1914. With sedans and coupes falling from favor, the Trident brand had to dig deep, creating a midsize luxury SUV that turns out to be very family-friendly. Inside beats a choice of two turbocharged Ferrari-designed engines. So naturally, your heart can’t help but run a few beats per minute faster, too.
On the downside, it’s pricey and sips petrol rather liberally. Still, not many others on the road have a pedigree to match it. That’s until Ferrari markets the Purosangue sometime in 2023.
The 2022 Maserati Levante is largely a carryover from the 2021 model year, save for a reorganization of its trim levels. They begin with the base GT model and continue up the trim ladder to the Modena, Modena S, and high-performance Trofeo line. While other SUVs like the BMW X5, Audi Q8, Mercedes-Benz GLE, and Porsche Cayenne might offer more technology as well as pricing and resale value that will make your accountant happy, there still is no sound, look, or personality like that found in the Maserati Levante. Even repeating its name sounds sexy.
High-Fashion Cabin
The interior of the Maserati Levante can be outfitted with features like available Zegna silk and Pieno Fiore leather. Step into the custom-build Fuoriserie range for an experience that is just a bit more bespoke. Still, we notice some controls shared with other vehicles in the Stellantis portfolio despite the premium price tag.
Beneath the hood is a different story. A pair of Ferrari-designed turbocharged engines is what motivates this Maserati. They range in tune and begin with the Levante GT and its 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 that delivers 345 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The Levante Modena employs a more powerful 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 making 424 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque. V8-power comes to the Modena S through a 3.8-liter twin-turbo making 550 horsepower and 538 lb-ft, while the Trofeo pumps that engine’s output up by 30 horses.
All Levante models use an 8-speed automatic transmission and Maserati’s Q4 all-wheel-drive system with active torque control.
The base Maserati Levante range starts with the Levante GT, which begins at $81,200. A destination fee of $1,495 applies to all models.
