The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek is a smart, practical alternative to SUVs and sedans. It’s not quite an SUV and not quite a hatchback, but it offers plenty of cargo space, ample ground clearance, plus some off-road capability.
For 2021, the Crosstrek receives only minimal changes. It got a full chassis makeover in 2020, and buyers have a choice between a 2.5-liter flat-4 engine with 182 horsepower or a turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-4 that makes 260 horsepower.
At the top of the range, a fully loaded Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid can cost close to $50,000. We were able to price one out to $48,629, thanks, in large part, to the 67 additional optional accessories available. Here’s an overview of what you get at the very top trim:
- Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid Trim: Plug-in hybrid powertrain, 18-inch black wheels, and added blind-spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert, heated front seats, and available heated steering wheel. ($35,345)
- Subaru’s Starlink Entertainment Anywhere Kit: You get two 32GB Apple iPads with WiFi, two Harman Kardon Bluetooth Headphones, and two OtterBox cases for your iPads. ($1,014).
- A wide variety of pet-friendly (and safe) accessories make transporting your pets a whole lot more comfortable for you and your animals, and a whole lot safer. Items include things like a Pet Harness ($79.99), padded, pet-friendly seat protector ($229.95), and pet bowls ($39.99).
- The Crosstrek gets some unique additional options like smoking accessories including things like an ashtray holder ($12.95), ashtray ($19.95), and cigarette lighter ($39.98).
Here are the highlights of a fully-loaded 2022 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid:
Plug-in Hybrid Powertrain
The plug-in hybrid powertrain in the Crosstrek is powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine and a pair of electric motors, which make it good for an estimated 90 MPGe. The plug-in system also delivers 17 miles of pure-electric range. The Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid also qualifies for a partial federal electric vehicle tax credit of up to $4,500. You also get standard X-Mode (which is Subaru’s all-wheel-drive system), hill descent control, 18-inch alloy wheels, and 8.7-inches of ground clearance.
Upscale Interior
The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid comes complete with leather-trimmed upholstery, keyless access, and pushbutton start. Another nicety is the 8.0-inch Subaru Starlink infotainment system, which comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The Crosstrek Hybrid also features exclusive connected services featuring remote battery-charging timer and remote climate control, which allows you to cool or heat the vehicle without using the engine. A free 10-year subscription to Subaru’s Starlink Safety and Security Plus is standard.
Subaru also offers a premium $2,500 option package that boasts a power moonroof, heated steering wheel, voice-activated navigation, and 432-watt Harman Kardon 8-speaker audio.
Pet Accessories and Safety Gear
Subaru offers more than 13 optional pet accessories to keep your furry family members safe and comfortable on the road. These include everything from a variety of different harnesses, pet bowls and bedding, seat and back covers, and pet bowls. Subaru also offers emergency roadside and severe weather kits.
Cargo Carrying Capability
There’s plenty of room in the Crosstrek, which has 41.3 cubic feet of load space. That flexibility can be further enhanced with a slew of optional accessories. Whether you’re a mountain biker, kayaker, or surfer, a wide variety of cargo, trailer hitch, and rooftop options are available. They even offer a Thule portable step ($89.95) that attaches to your wheel to help you manage the cargo on the roof.
