Volkswagen has recalled 177,493 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport SUVs from model years 2024 and 2025 because the plastic engine covers can melt and catch fire.
The company tells federal safety officials that technicians can install the engine cover incorrectly after removing it to service the engine. This can then contact hot engine parts, which could lead to an engine compartment fire.
Volkswagen is aware of at least six fires that may be related to the engine cover’s design.
Because an engine cover is an unnecessary, purely decorative part, dealers have a very simple fix for this problem—they remove it and throw it away.
