VW Promises New EV for Detroit

A second model based on the I.D. electric vehicle concept presented by Volkswagen at the Paris Motor Show will make its worldwide debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. VW says the new model is “a multi-functional vehicle for a new era.”

The I.D. family of vehicles is intended to showcase the flexibility of VW’s Modular Electric Drive architecture, which is known internally at MEB. The new platform is expected to spawn a range of fully-connected all-electric vehicles. The new concept also promises to have a fully autonomous mode where the driver can touch the VW logo inside and the steering wheel disappears from the dashboard.

According to VW, the I.D. concept in Detroit “forges links between the legendary origins of the Volkswagen brand and its electrifying future. Its overall concept is revolutionary. It combines ample space for travel with a long electric driving range, to usher a new feeling of freedom, with zero emissions and a new era of mobility.” It’s expected that the I.D. concept will be an evolution of previous people-moving Microbus and Budd-e concepts.
