For a second year, Volvo will build a Superbowl promotion around a pun. The automaker is planning to give away $2 million worth of cars…if one team scores a safety during the game.
To register, groan at the joke, then go to VolvoSafetySunday.com, pick out the car you want, complete with options, and click on “try to win this Volvo.” You’ll be asked for contact information. Options include nearly the entire Volvo lineup, including Polestar-engineered high-performance models. Then, watch on February 7, and hope the quarterback of either the Tampa Bay Buccaneers or the Kansas City Chiefs has a very bad moment.
On the day of the big game, if either team scores a safety, Volvo will draw winners randomly from the pool of entries until the $2 million budget is exhausted.
For those who don’t watch football, or watch only for the commercials, a safety occurs when the defense tackles an offensive player with the ball in the offense’s own endzone. Since that’s the place on the field the offense least wants to be, a safety is a relatively rare occurrence. That makes it fairly unlikely that Volvo will actually have to pay out on this sweepstakes.
If you’re on the fence, we’re particular fans of the V90, which, by our calculations, had the lowest predicted 5-year cost of ownership among luxury cars in 2020.
