Volvo Cars has announced that every vehicle it launches from 2019 will feature some type of electrified powertrain. The upcoming Volvo vehicle portfolio will include mild hybrids, plug-in hybrids and fully electric cars. The firm plans to introduce five fully electric models between 2019-2021, three with Volvo badges and two other high-performance vehicles from its global EV performance sub-brand, Polestar. That group will be supplemented by a range of gasoline and turbodiesel plug-in hybrids, and 48-volt mild hybrid options on all Volvo models.

“This announcement marks the end of the solely combustion-engine-powered car,” said Håkan Samuelsson, Volvo president and chief executive. “Volvo Cars has stated that it plans to have sold a total of one million electrified vehicles by 2025. When we said it, we meant it. This is how we are going to do it. People increasingly demand electrified cars and we want to respond to our customers’ current and future needs. You can now pick and choose whichever electrified Volvo you wish.”

The decision to go all-electric underlines another Volvo Cars commitment to developing a cleaner, greener corporate reality with significantly reduced carbon emissions in both its products and operations. Part of that includes making its manufacturing operations climate-neutral by 2025.
