Intent on creating a viable alternative to a conventional child seat that can provide all of the requisite protective characteristics but be far lighter and more compact when not in use, Volvo has developed a revolutionary variation on the basic theme. Weighing less than 11 pounds – barely half the heft of most existing traditional kid seats – Volvo’s Inflatable Child Seat Concept can be folded to fit inside of a standard carry-on bag with room to spare.

The prototype Inflatable Child Seat is constructed from a unique drop-stitch fabric, a material originally intended for military aircraft applications but now commonly found in the boating industry. This rear-facing seat can inflate and deflate in less than 40 seconds using an integrated, remote controlled/controllable pump, and its physical status is constantly monitored inside of a vehicle via a Bluetooth connection. No word yet on when we might see a production variation or what it will cost.
