Volvo Dropping V60 Wagon, But Keeping Off-Road & High-Performance Versions

2021 Volvo V60It hasn’t been a good week for the esteemed Volvo station wagon. Long-roof Scandinavians have had a place of honor in the hearts and driveways of sensible Americans for generations. But their numbers are threatened.

The latest blow: Volvo has canceled most versions of its V60 wagon for the U.S. A Volvo Cars USA spokesperson tells us, “The V60 with the T5 FWD powertrain (Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription trims) has been discontinued for 2022. The V60 remains available as the V60 Polestar Engineered and the V60 T5 AWD Cross Country.”

The move comes just days after Volvo announced the end of the more exclusive V90 wagon.

The V60 features one of the most elegant interiors found in its $40,000-and-up price range, along with SUV-like cargo space and sedan-like handling. It’s probably the best-looking wagon Volvo has ever built, from its muscled exterior to its upscale cabin with an available blonde-weave textile pattern upholstery.

The more SUV-like Cross Country version of the V60 will stick around next year, as well as the Polestar-engineered edition. That one is the most interesting model in the lineup, but also the priciest. It combines a turbocharged and supercharged 4-cylinder engine with a plug-in hybrid system. Together, they’re good for 415 horsepower and far quicker acceleration than anyone has any right to expect from a wagon. The Polestar version can travel up to 22 miles on battery power alone. But it comes at a premium, with an MSRP of a little over $67,000.
