America invented the station wagon. But we don’t love all our children. We can’t seem to hold onto a wagon these days, no matter how perfect it is.
Case in point: the Volvo V90, one of the best wagons ever built, has been canceled for the 2022 model year. With an MSRP of $51,800 plus a $1,095 destination fee, it’s one of the most elegant vehicles available at its price point.
The V90 combines SUV-like cargo space with the sharper handling of a sedan. It boasts an elegant cabin and long, sleek lines that belie the frumpy reputation of wagons. In the words of our test driver, the V90 has “a certain appeal that’s admittedly not broad, but those people who ‘get it’ are onto something special.”
If you get it, there’s still time. Dealers still have a few 2021 V90s in stock. Very few. Our data show fewer than 30 left on sales lots nationwide.
Dealers will sometimes accept lower offers for a discontinued model. They are often anxious to get it off the lot and replace it with something the manufacturer still advertises. Today’s car shopping climate is highly unusual, with few discounts available on anything. But, if you’re a wagon enthusiast, we wouldn’t blame you for trying.
If you get the appeal of a long, low roofline, there’s still hope. A Volvo representative explains, “Volvo will offer V90 Cross Country in [model year 2022], but simplify the range and no longer offer the standard V90.”
The Cross Country model sits a bit higher for a more SUV-like ride, but retains much of the V90’s appeal. The V60 is also expected to carry the storied Volvo wagon banner into the 2022 model year.
