Volvo C40 Recharge EV Priced Around $59K Before Tax Credit

Volvo C40 RechargeThe 2022 Volvo C40 Recharge electric vehicle (EV) is an intriguing new option for EV shoppers and kicks off a new business model for Volvo. It’s a sharp-looking compact SUV with a coupe-like, raked roofline. Unlike other Volvo products, you won’t find dozens of them sitting on the lot at your local Volvo dealership waiting for buyers. Shoppers, instead, can order a C40 Recharge online.

Tax Credits Cut Price

The C40 Recharge will reach dealerships late this year and carry a starting price of $58,750, plus a $1,095 destination charge. That’s a good deal more expensive than the Tesla Model Y, America’s best-selling electric SUV, which starts at $52,990. But the Volvo still qualifies for the full $7,500 federal EV tax incentive. The Tesla does not.

The C40 Recharge shares much of its platform with the larger XC40 Recharge but is 3 inches shorter and offers less cargo space due to its sloping roofline. It makes up for the difference with unique styling inside and out.

Just One Trim, With Everything

The C40 Recharge is available in only one trim, called Ultimate. It’s very well-equipped, featuring a huge panoramic moonroof, Harman Kardon sound system, Volvo’s full Pilot Assist suite of driver-assistance technologies, and 20-inch wheels. It features a unique pixel headlight technology – the headlights are made up of many separate lights. The system can detect oncoming cars and turn the tiny beams on and off as needed to keep full visibility for the driver while not blinding oncoming traffic with glare.

Volvo says the C40 Recharge will get 260 miles on a charge. The EPA has not yet tested that claim. Buyers qualify for up to 250 kWh of free charging at Electrify America charging stations.
