Although it provided no details as to timing, a source at Volvo confirmed to KBB that its compact 40 Series will be returning to the U.S. lineup at some point before the end of the decade. Last sold here in 2011, the 40 Series will likely return as an XC40 compact crossover and an S40 Sedan as well as a new version of the V40 Wagon and its higher-riding V40 Cross Country sibling (both pictured here) that are currently on sale in Europe and got a mid-cycle refresh unveiled in Geneva.

All are set to ride on a new global Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform currently under development with Chinese parent company, Geely Auto. This same architecture also will underpin a series of Geely vehicles that will be created and sold in the home market. Like other Volvo products, the new 40 Series models will be powered by the automaker’s Drive-E turbocharged gasoline engines. Expect to see both 1.5-liter/3-cylinder and 2.0-liter/4-cylinder powerplants as well as plug-in versions, although exactly what will be sold here remains to be seen. Like other Volvo products, the new 40 Series contingent also will be designed to accommodate all of the automaker’s latest safety equipment and autonomous driving features.
