Volkswagen plans to unveil a concept crossover at the North American International Auto Show in January, according to a Reuters report. The news service indicated the one-off would seat only five but is believed to preview the automaker’s upcoming 7-passenger SUV that will start rolling off of the production line at VW’s plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, starting in 2016.

First confirmed on the eve of the 2014 Detroit gathering by Volkswagen AG boss Martin Winterkorn, VW’s new and still-unnamed 3-row offering was penned specifically to attract buyers in the North American market. Set to slot between the Tiguan and Touareg, it’s rumored to strongly resemble the CrossBlue SUV Concept pictured here and could offer several powertrain options, including gasoline, diesel and hybrid. Equally important, it will give VW instant access to a new and lucrative slice of the mid-size crossover/SUV segment, an arena critical to helping Volkswagen reach its stated goal of selling 800,000 vehicles here in the U.S. by 2018.
