Volkswagen to Skip 2026 Model Year With ID. Buzz Van

  • Volkswagen will not bring its 2026 ID. Buzz electric van to the U.S., but says a 2027 version is coming.
  • The ID. Buzz has won plenty of attention with its retro looks but not many sales, likely due to its high price and short range.

Volkswagen will not bring its ID. Buzz electric minivan to the U.S. for the 2026 model year, but says the car hasn’t been canceled. It likely won’t be hard to find one if you’re interested, either.

Dealers have a large supply of the cars on the lot. They will likely still have 2025 models in stock for most of 2026.

People Are Delighted by It, but Few Buy It

  • The I.D. Buzz won design awards with its plucky ‘60s-inspired style, but onlookers are more enthusiastic than buyers.
  • A $60,000-plus price tag and 234-mile range limit its appeal.

The ID. Buzz is a spiritual successor to the 1960s-era Volkswagen Type 2 – the “love bus” that had an outsized cultural impact and stayed in production somewhere on Earth from 1949 to 2013.

It won the 2025 North American Utility Vehicle of the Year award with its nostalgic look and some clever design details, like a center console divider that pops out to serve as a cooler, and a removable storage space divider that functions as an ice scraper.

But prices start at over $60,000. Part of the appeal of the original Type 2 was its low price. Its successor is the most expensive thing on the Volkswagen lot.

VW compounded the pricing problem at first by limiting dealers to just one or two in stock, leading to markups for rarity.

Range has also been an issue. The longest-range version is good for just 234 miles between charging sessions. The Buzz looks like the perfect road trip vehicle, but in practice, it fills a road trip with long charging stops.

Skipping 2026, but They Won’t be Hard to Find

  • Volkswagen says there will be a 2027 ID. Buzz.
  • Dealers still have months’ worth of 2025 models in stock.

The ID. Buzz hasn’t been canceled, the company says. Volkswagen’s U.S. communications chief, Jeannine Ginivan, told reporters, “We’re leveraging current inventory of 2025 models early in the year in 2026 and moving straight to Model Year 2027 later in 2026.”

Volkswagen kept it rare at first, but has since built up a huge supply of the vans. KBB data show that dealers ended November with nearly 150 days’ worth in stock. They typically aim for less than half that.

So those interested in an ID. Buzz should have an easy time finding one for sale. The pause may also give VW time to work on improving its range, lowering its price, or both, for the 2027 model year.
