Volkswagen Confirms New Small SUV

Speaking at the automaker’s annual media conference in Wolfsburg, VW’s head of passenger car brands Herbert Diess confirmed an expansion of the firm’s SUV/crossover lineup here in the U.S by the end of the decade to include a subcompact model. Diess said the addition will be an entry level vehicle positioned beneath the Tiguan. While his comments fueled speculation the newcomer would be a U.S. version of Volkswagen’s new T-Roc–shown here in concept form and set to go on sale in Europe later this summer–a call to VW indicated that will not be the case.

Sources said while the new vehicle will share the same MQB modular platform as the T-Roc and several other current/future VW models, the U.S. version will be somewhat larger. It almost certainly will be a 5-door and marketed here as well as in China, which is now VW’s single largest market. The estimated arrival time for this newcomer is a 2019-2020 and we’re hoping to learn a bit more about this new 5-passenger crossover next month at the New York Auto Show.
