Volkswagen is looking to reinvent itself in the wake of the diesel cheating scandal by promoting electric vehicles and connectivity to develop a new mobility model in a fast-changing world. While the German automaker will show a new people-moving EV concept at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the original I.D. concept, which bowed last fall in Paris, will be at CES to show off the MEB (Modular Electric Drive architecture) that underpins both vehicles.

VW will be showing new connectivity features it says will allow owners to create a new user experience and interface with vehicles through their smartphones. The new software will enable everything from on-line experiences on the go up through fully autonomous vehicle operation.

“Thanks to App Connect, our customers can already connect just about any smartphone with their vehicle, but with the Volkswagen User-ID, we’re taking things a major step further,” promised Dr. Volkmar Tanneberger, head of the electrical and electronic development at VW. “This seamless integration of Partner Services combined with our own online service will create an entirely new user experience.”
