Volkswagen Cancels ID.7 EV for U.S.

Volkswagen will not bring a planned all-electric sedan to the U.S. The company will still build the ID.7 to sell in other markets.

In a statement, a VW spokesperson blamed “the ongoing challenging EV [electric vehicle] climate,” adding, “Electric vehicles continue to be a core part of Volkswagen’s long-term product strategy, and new electric models will continue to be introduced for this market.”

About the ID.7

The ID.7 is a roomy electric sedan with a sporty liftback profile. Already on sale in Europe and China, VW planned to sell it in the U.S. with a choice of two powertrains making either 282 or 355 horsepower.

Dropping it from the lineup before it arrives is not a shocking move. Volkswagen delayed the model’s U.S. introduction last May.

Americans bought a record number of EVs last year. But once-rapid sales growth has slowed. EV sales grew 7.3% in 2024. 2023’s figure had been 49% higher than 2022’s.

VW’s Other EVs Are SUVs or Vans

Volkswagen has two EVs for sale in the U.S. today.

The ID.4 is an all-electric compact SUV with a range of up to 291 miles, curvy looks, and a unique LED strip at the base of the windshield that communicates battery charge and turn-by-turn directions.

The ID. Buzz is an all-electric re-creation of the classic VW bus with seating for seven and evocative throwback looks.

It recently won the North American Utility Vehicle of the Year award. But it is likely to be a rare sight for much of 2025. Volkswagen has told each dealer to expect just one or two to sell in its first year on the market.
