Video: BMW Tries Subscriptions for Car Features Overseas

Buying a car is one of the biggest macrotransactions most of us ever attempt. But BMW wants to tack on a bunch of microtransactions afterward.

In a handful of countries (though not the U.S. yet), the German automaker is experimenting with monthly fees for features like heated seats and adaptive headlights.

It makes sense for automakers. We’re keeping our cars longer than ever, so they want to find ways to make money between those rare transactions. But it could leave buyers paying a non-depreciating amount for a depreciating asset.
