You know the Toyota Highlander. You’ve probably seen it in your neighborhood many times since its 2000 introduction.
The current generation of the Highlander isn’t even new – it dates to the 2020 model year.
So why is our Micah Muzio test-driving a 2023 Highlander for you? Because Toyota this year finally gave it the engine some critics think it always needed – a turbocharged 4-cylinder making 265 horsepower.
That’s down on horsepower compared to the old V6, Micah says, but “torque is up in a big way.” So how does it feel to drive? “I really like how there’s no delay in acceleration,” he says. In exchange for more fuel efficiency, he says, it’s “a good step up from the V6.”
There are trade-offs with the smaller engine, but it might be worth your attention.
