U.S.-Built 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Gets Tesla Port

The 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 XRT seen from a front quarter angle

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is already one of the best all-around electric vehicles (EVs) available today, winner of our 2024 Best Buy Award among EVs. For 2025, it will get more appealing with a few adjustments.

A new off-road trim level, a federal EV tax incentive, and a new charging port are the newsmakers.

Rugged XRT Model

The Ioniq 5 XRT rides on all-terrain tires, with a ride height 0.9 inches higher than other Ioniq 5 models. Scratch-resistant black body cladding and unique front and rear bumpers to improve approach and departure angles help make it more useful on the trail. But it still lacks the dimensions (and the available skid plates) of a dedicated off-roader. Think of it as more electric rally car than Jeep Wrangler rival.

Built-in-USA-Discount

Hyundai has begun building the Ioniq 5 at its Georgia “Metaplant America” facility.

No, we don’t know what a metaplant is. A rival for a gigafactory, we suppose. Neither term has any meaning.

Final assembly in the U.S. means the Ioniq 5 will qualify for half the federal government’s $7,500 EV tax credit, Hyundai says. The car earns just half the credit because Hyundai doesn’t get enough critical battery minerals from within the U.S. or its major trade partners. But Hyundai, like other automakers, has been working to change its supply lines and may eventually qualify for all of it.

Leased Ioniq 5 models still get the full discount thanks to an IRS loophole.

Tesla Charging Port

The 2025 Ioniq 5 will be the first non-Tesla car built to plug into Tesla Supercharger public charging stations.

Not every electric car can use every charger. Tesla has its own plug shape, the North American Charging Standard (NACS) port. Most other EVs, including other Hyundai models, use the rival Combined Charging System (CCS) plug.

Most automakers (including Hyundai) have agreed to switch to the Tesla plug, bringing the U.S. closer to a day when any EV can plug into any public charger. The 2025 Ioniq 5 is the first non-Tesla EV to make the switch. It will come equipped with a NACS port to plug into Tesla’s extensive network of chargers.

Buyers will get an adapter allowing them to plug into CCS chargers as well, Hyundai says.
