Toyota called back to history this week with a special edition of its Corolla Hatchback honoring a cult hit from the Reagan years.
The 2026 Toyota Corolla FX salutes the Corolla FX-16, a 1987 model that featured a more powerful engine and a tighter suspension than the standard Corolla of the day.
The new FX is based on the SE trim and is special in appearance only. It uses the same 169-horsepower 4-cylinder engine as other Corolla hatchbacks and gets no suspension upgrades. That’s a bit strange, since last year Toyota released a sedan honoring the FX-16 that featured some suspension tuning changes.
Toyota will build just 1,600 copies for the U.S. The company hasn’t revealed pricing. The standard Corolla hatch starts at $24,915, including destination fee, but a limited edition like this is more likely to start in the high $20,000s.
The new Corolla Hatchback FX Edition rides on glossy white wheels with black lug nuts that will inspire nostalgia in those of us who remember the 1980s. Paint options include Ice Cap, Blue Crush Metallic, and a deep orange hue Toyota calls Inferno. All come with a gloss black wing.
Inside, black sport touring seats feature orange contrast stitching. It continues on the door panels, steering wheel, and shift boot. A wireless charger, 7-inch gauge cluster, and 8-inch touchscreen come standard. The 2026 Toyota Corolla Hatchback FX is set to arrive at dealerships this fall.
