With the disastrous 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan now well in its rearview mirror, Toyota Motor Corporation has reassumed its former position as the leader in global vehicle sales. According to Toyota, its 2012 totals – including those of its Hino Motors and Daihatsu Motors subsidiaries – were up by 23 percent, and totaled 9.75 million units worldwide. Second place in the 2012 sales derby went to the 2011 title holder, General Motors Corporation that placed 9.29 million of its vehicles into customer hands. Rounding out the top three was the Volkswagen Group, with global sales of 9.07 million units.
