Toyota (Perhaps) Teases Next Camry

A teaser photo showing what is likely the 2025 Toyota Camry in heavy shadow

The Toyota Camry is the best-selling sedan in a pickup-truck- and SUV-loving country. The only sedan to appear among the ten best-selling cars so far this year, the Camry is holding on in a world that seems to have otherwise passed sedans by.

But it’s getting older. The Camry on dealer lots today first appeared for the 2018 model year. There was a time when a popular sedan could go eight or more years without a significant redesign. But, with the competition from sport utility vehicles so fierce that one of Toyota’s other sedans is now dressed as an SUV for Halloween, the company knows it can’t stay competitive with an aging Camry.

So, a new Camry is coming for 2025. Toyota today dropped a teaser photo of what is almost certainly the next generation of the quintessential family sedan.

The photo doesn’t give us much to go on. It shows a low nose and roof and a stance meant to emphasize width – traits that characterize today’s Camry. Accompanying text says only, “Can you guess what’s on the horizon?”

All Guesses Are Right

And you can, can’t you? It’s a Camry. Beyond that, we can guess it will wear slightly sportier styling because anyone shopping for a car instead of an SUV in 2025 is probably in it for the driving feel. Toyota just added sporty flair to the newest Prius, after all. The Camry is likely to get a few shakes of Tabasco.

Turbocharged 4-cylinder engines seem more likely than the venerable V6 – a form fading from most automakers’ lineups. An emphasis on hybrid power seems inevitable, given Toyota’s success selling hybrids as the rest of the market pushes electric vehicles.

We’ll have to wait for details to confirm that speculation. But we’ll probably have them before long. The Japan Mobility Show – formerly the Tokyo Auto Show and the biggest event of the year for Japanese automakers – is less than two weeks away. There would be no better opportunity for Toyota to unveil such an important product.
