Tesla has begun to sell a less-expensive version of its 2021 Model Y SUV, with reduced range. The move, which brings the least expensive Model Y close to the price of the entry-level Model 3, perhaps as a response to increasing competition.
Tesla Model Y Standard Range
Called the Model Y Standard Range, the new trim level starts at a price of $43,190. It has an advertised driving range of 244 miles, down from 303 miles for the Performance model, and 326 for the Long Range version.
That price is remarkably close to the MSRP of the Model Y’s newest competition, the Ford Mustang Mach-E. Ford’s midsize crossover EV goes for $43,995, and offers a range of about 230 miles (in rear-wheel-drive layout).
We should note, however, that the final price buyers pay could be dramatically different for the two cars. Ford buyers still qualify for a $7,500 federal tax credit for which Tesla buyers no qualify. The credit is on the first 200,000 vehicles a manufacturer sells.
