- Tesla released a new Model Y Performance in Europe this week
- It’s likely to come to the U.S. soon
Tesla has released a new, high-performance version of its best-selling Model Y SUV in Europe. The Model Y Performance isn’t available in the U.S. yet, but we expect to see it here shortly.
It’s not unusual for Tesla to debut models overseas and bring them to the U.S. shortly after. The company released its updated Model Y in China first earlier this year, bringing it to the U.S. a few weeks later.
The Model Y Performance gets both mechanical and cosmetic upgrades.
A new front fascia and rear spoiler improve aerodynamics and cue passersby that they’re looking at something new. It gets unique wheel designs, too. Tesla calls them “arachnid wheels” on its English-language European website.
Inside, first-row sport seats get both heating and ventilation. Rear seats get heating and a power recline function. New sound-dampening materials and acoustic glass should make for a quieter ride.
Tesla has been less forthcoming about actual performance upgrades.
The company advertises a “new Performance Powertrain,” but has offered no details on the power. It claims a zero to 60 mph time of 3.3 seconds, down from 4.6 in the Long Range All-Wheel Drive (AWD) model.
An adaptive suspension adjusts damping and handling based on road conditions.
The company claims a range of 360 miles in European testing. However, Europe’s electric vehicle (EV) testing cycle is much more lenient than domestic testing — the U.S. EPA routinely certifies EVs for much shorter ranges.
We’ll bring more details when Tesla unveils the car for American audiences, which could come in a matter of weeks.
