Tesla Increases Model S Plaid Price by Five Figures

Tesla S is fast charging electric carWe report car price increases all the time. But we rarely have an unexpected jump of five figures to tell you about.

Tesla has increased the price of its top-of-the-line Model S Plaid by $10,000. Driving in Plaid will now cost you $129,900.

The move comes just hours ahead of a launch party for the new model. And it comes just a week after Tesla eliminated a planned higher trim level. The Model S Plaid Plus had been the next range-topping Tesla, with a claimed 0-to-60 mph time of under 2 seconds and a reported range of 520 miles. But Tesla unexpectedly canceled that model last week with little explanation.

Tesla claims a range of 390 miles for the Plaid edition, which boasts more than 1,000 horsepower from its two electric motors.

Tesla lacks a public relations department to communicate with the press, often giving news updates only through tweets from CEO Elon Musk. Musk said that the Plaid Plus had been canceled because the Plaid itself was “just so good.”

Good enough to justify a big price hike, apparently. We’ll bring more news from the launch party if it breaks.
